Cardinal Platlsburgh State Normal School ISU - 1976 Pittsburgh Academy to the State University College at Plattsburgh As far back as 1811, there was established a need for education in the village of Pittsburgh, which had been founded after the revolution. Pitts- burgh then was the official port of entry to Canada and an important trading post. The Pittsburgh Aca- demy, situated at the corner of Oak and Brinkerhoff Streets, was established by voluntary public subscrip- tion, but just two years after its establishment, it was closed for military use. By 1816 the Academy reopened and it was then that interest in teacher education was introduced; the Lancastrian, or monitorial, system was used. In 1849 the Pittsburgh Academy was selected by the Board of Regents to give instruction in the Science of Common School Training , and an act passed by the New York State Legislature in 1866 established a normal school system for the entire state. Pittsburgh, for a number of reasons, was not chosen. Mounting pres- sure indicating that the present educational system was inadequate, faulty, and only suitable for an unpro- gressive agrarian society, led the Clinton County Board of Supervisors, in 1889, to take steps in remedying the situation by introducing professional teacher training. Things moved quickly; a board of managers was appointed, a site was picked out for the future normal school (the site being the present Hawkins Hall), and on September 3, 1890 the Pittsburgh State Normal School opened with Fox Holden as principal, a twelve member faculty, and 85 students enrolled in a two year Elementary-Classical course. The school was designed to prepare teachers to do successful work in Northern New York, and a requirement for graduation was 80 weeks of student teaching, mainly in the Campus School counterpart of that day, the Model School. Dr. George K. Hawkins, Principal Pittsburgh State Normal School From 1898-1933 Plattsburgh Normal and Training School Faculty — 1904 V N n 7897 the first c ass, a three students, graduated; with that the Alumni Association was founded. Dr. Reed, a supervisor from Saratoga County, became prin- cipal in 1892. Expansion of the school to include a manual training department and kindergarten in 1894 and 1896, respectively, were the first steps toward the extensive campus of today. Enrollment was distributed between grades one through eight in the Model School and the four programs in the Normal School itself — Elementary English two years, Advanced English three years, Scientific one and Vi, and Classical (Greek) four years. Dr. George K. Hawkins, a teacher of science and mathematics, succeeded to the post of principal in 1898, and his reign has been termed the years of ex- cellence , marked by the fact that he was able to re- build the school and uphold the level of education after a disasterous fire in 1929. In 1910, Plattsburgh State Normal School (PSNS) was authorized to train com- mercial teachers in a two year course, thus establishing the Commercial Department. Twelve years later saw the expansion of the Education and Commercial cur- ricula to three year courses, plus the institution of the first summer school session. By 1929, PSNS was the only Normal School that offered Commercial Education in the state. Once the school was established academically, the students started organizing into groups, some of which were forerunners of present-day organizations. In 1914, the first Cardinal Yearbook was published, expressing the thoughts and activities of PSNS ' s students. The 1915 Cardinal staff celebrated the 25th Anniversary of PSNS by dedicating their yearbook to Dr. George K. Hawkins, principal of PSNS. A quick glance at the roster of 66 graduating seniors indicates that PSNS drew its student body from throughout the state then, as SUC at Platts- burgh does today. In the fall of 1915 the Students ' Wel- fare League was formed in an effort to meet the needs of students when they were away from home; PSNS was the only institution to have such an organization. An interesting tradition of the early classes that is not carried out now was that of presenting a class gift to the school. Some interesting examples are the sundial given by the classes of 1918 and 1919, 1920 ' s water fountain, 7929 ' s enlarged portrait of Dr. Hawkins for the new building, and 1930 ' s purse of gold. The early twenties marked the beginning of music groups at the Normal School. These included the Choral Society, Boy ' s Glee Club, Girl ' s Glee Club, and an orchestra. Christmas 7926 found (he Normal hosting a cantata performed by the students. Sports had a sporatic his- tory in the early 1920 ' s. By the late twenties, football had been reestablished, a large tennis club was in operation, and three basketball teams were active— the men ' s, the Clionian, and the Agonian teams. Students could also join the Planorscho Camp Fire Girls and the Outdoor Club. Plattsburgh State Normal School was completely destroyed by fire on Saturday, January 26, 1929. All school records were lost except for the manuscripts contained in the Record of the Board of Managers which was out of the building. Although Music Direc- tor Lyndon R. Street and seven students were practicing in the building at the time of the fire, no lives were lost. Meanwhile, classes still continued to be held by using Plattsburgh City Hall and other public buildings. 36 This is the study hall where I took two exams Fri. before the Fire. It is two weeks from today when the fire occurred and it is burning. — anonymous ' 29 In Memoriam Grim, mute you stand with crumbling walls outlined against the sky, One spire still raised in silent supplication, wondering why Things are no longer as they were. The winter wind shrieks round you with an eerie waiting sound. The ivy that clung to your walls lies lifeless on th° ground, The friend we loved so well is gone. Wordless, heart-sick we view the mass of shapeless blackened stone. Embalmed within those ashes is the life we called our own. Our Alma Mater and our friend. Some day again thy stately walls up from the dust shall rise, Some day we hope to see thy spires kissing the summer skies. And ivy climb upon thy walls. Helen Bromley ' 31 7-hr . - - Pittsburgh Slate Normal School, one wing of which is used as a school of Practice, (forerunner of the campus school) later named Hawkins Hall. A new $1,000,000 building was constructed on A the old site, and by 7932 faculty and students moved into the new building. September of that year saw an enrollment of 228 students in the Elemen- tary Department; the Commercial Department had been moved to Albany in 7937. Dr. Charles Ward succeeded Dr. Hawkins in 7933. He was a progressive and imaginative man who was vitally concerned with people, especially those in a rural setting, as exemplified during his nineteen years of service by the expansion of Elementary Education to four years and the establishment of the departments of Home Economics and Nurse-Teacher. 7936-7 saw the organization of the first intercollegiate basketball team under the supervision of Dr. Edward E. Redcay, who is credited with bringing sports to the campus. The thirties was a decade of change for the Normal School. Education was organized by Dr. Ward in his four aims for the school, which were: 7. to preserve cultural heritage 2. to create an intellectual atmosphere in which the student is encouraged towards self-realization and individuality 3. to point the individual towards social respon- sibility 4. to meet the trend toward industrialization and specialization with curricula expanded to include the teachings of technical skills and the enlargement of library facilities. However, the present system still had its inade- 38 quacies, and higher standards of education were in demand. In 1937, the establishment of the Home Economics Department expressed Dr. Ward ' s theme. This program was very special because it was the first curriculum to be on a four year outline, enabling its graduates to receive Bachelor of Science degrees at the completion of the program. The Elementary Edu- cation program was expanded to four years in 1938, and its graduates were awarded Bachelor of Education degrees. Now that the Normal was granting degrees, the future looked bright for being designated a college. The Feinberg Bill was signed by the New York State Governor on April 12, 1942. All Normal Schools in the state would be State Teachers Colleges, which meant an increasing emphasis on student and faculty excellence. PSNS now became Pittsburgh State Teachers College. The students and faculty alike were ecstatic when the news of the change in status was received on April 13th. All afternoon classes were cancelled, a school wide assembly was held for the announcement, and then everyone, including townspeople, partici- pated in a two-hour parade along the streets of Pitts- burgh. Although the world had many problems in the year 1942, everyone in Pittsburgh was very happy on that day in April. The new system promised so much more diversity and possibility for expansion. New developments started soon. The Home Econ- omics depar tment started planning a building of its own in the fall of 1942. In December 1943 such a building was authorized to support about 250 students. The new department, which was one of the largest Home Economics programs in the state, would have a place of its own, thereby alleviating Hawkins Hall ' s congestion problem. In 1947, the Home Economics department acquired the Guibord home at 134 Court Street, which became the Home Management House. Miss Louise Norton, director of the department, must be mentioned here as a great driving force behind her departments growth and expansion. The $348,880 Home Economics and Science Building was started in 7952, and when it was first used in 1954 it was named Ward Hall in respect to the man who had worked so hard for this accomplishment. The second new program for PSTC was the ancestor of the present-day nursing department. Clinton County was considered a rural area and needed support in the health delivery system. In the fall of 1943, while World War II was still very much in evidence, the Cadet Nurse Corps was formed. These women, after three years, including summers, would be ready to enter the armed forces as nurses. A search was con- ducted for hospitals willing to participate with PSTC in the training of the nurses. The House of the Good Samaritan in Watertown was the first hospital to coop- erate, followed by Physicians Hospital in Pittsburgh. As the program ' s enrollment increased, Mary McClellan Hospital in Cambridge, NY was also used for training. Specialty training centers were also used; Triboro Hospital in Jamaica, NY for tuberculosis nurs- ing, St. Lawrence State Hospital for neuropsychiatric nursing, and Queens General for pediatric nursing. The last group of USCNC nurses entered PSTC in the fall of 1945. At the end of the war, it was decided to keep a program for nurse training, because centralized schools and the public in rural areas desperately needed more health care. In September 1946, the Cadet Nurse Corps was absorbed by the new four-year program, the Nurse-Teacher Department. Students graduating from the new program received a Bachelor of Science degree. In May of 1947 a very good plan of cooperation was settled upon by PSTC, Union Univer- sity School of Nursing and Albany Hospital, which allowed each student a 24-month training experience in an Albany area hospital. All previous hospital affiliations were gradually eliminated. As in any edu- cational training program, students needed practice in a school setting. Practice School Nurse-Teaching Cen- ters were established in Schenectady and Pough- keepsie, and senior students all took turns in this phase of the course. By the early 1960 ' s, Pittsburgh had the only complete Nurse-Teacher training program in the State system. Students at this time were receiving training at the Metropolitan Hospital in New York City and Pilgrim State Hospital in Brentwood. Dr. Grace Appleton ' s skill as director of the program was prob- ably the largest contributing factor to the program throughout her affiliation. She arrived at PSTC in 1943 to set up the Cadet Nurse Corps and remained as director of the Nurse-Teacher Education Department until her death, late in 1961. It was her duty to set up the various curricula throughout the years, and to develop them into very respectable programs. This group was celebrating the change from Normal School to Col- lege. Legally the transition was to be in luly, but a telegram from Albany to Dr. Ward stating that the College Bill had just been passed was sufficient to precipitate celebration. This picture is dated April 13, 1942. World War II was felt in various ways at Pitts- burgh. Along with other service activities, late 1941 found Miss Emily Wiley of the Home Economics faculty organizing a Red Cross Clothing Clinic. A few months later, the students participated in the Victory Book Campaign for used books to be sent to service men. Starting on the last Friday in January, 1942, Friday afternoons of each week were set aside by Dr. Ward for non-credit defense courses for those students who wished to participate. The students at Plattsburgh took part in successful air raids and endured sugar rationing. In 1942, the reservists on campus were drilled three times a week to keep in physical shape. Dr. Redcay was the coordinator of the reservist training on campus, for all four branches. Late 1941 and early 1942 found more and more current male students and alumni joining the armed services. Several more students were called in the first mass call in February 1943. Mr. Robert MacFarlane, a Rural Education instructor, began a Civilian Pilot Training course. Graduates of this program could then go on to receive their private pilot ' s license. An indicator of public feeling concerning the war was expressed in March 1943 when PSTC announced that it could give credit to returning students with armed service ex- perience. The school had often tried to have the students become active in the community. With the onset of World War II, the students organized Red Cross Drives, a Mobile Blood Bank, and sold War Bonds and Stamps. Nature presented a perfect event in which the students could further help the North Country. The apple crop ripened in the fall of 1943, but the War had sorely depleted the number of people usually available to harvest the crop. After compli- cated legal procedures, Dr. Ward released the students to help in the local emergency. Classes were can- celled and Miss Alice Lewis was selected by Dr. Ward to manage the entire effort. The students and faculty all donned their faded dungarees and other com- fortable clothing and were transported to Mr. Donald F. Green ' s Chazy Orchard in trucks and buses. It is reported that everyone participating had a good time, and close relationships were formed between the students and the 24 active teachers during the four day event. During that season, almost $2,000 was earned in the combined effort to pick 12,930 bushels. This activity was repeated in 1944 when 288 students participated, which was roughly one-half of the entire enrollment. The participants all proudly wore the embroidered shoulder insignia that was available. Miss Lewis, for her monumental task of organizing everyone, received a citation from the Victory Farm Volunteers of the U.S. Crop Corps. The immediate post-war years found PSTC relatively quiet, trying to adjust to a new era along with the rest of the country. The Early Childhood Education speciality was established in 1946. Students could still choose the option to accelerate, which was set up during the war years, so that by attending three summer sessions. APPLE PICKING they could graduate in three years. Today, this is not very remarkable, but at a time when everyone took almost the same courses in the same sequence, this was very innovative. PSTC expanded once again when the Board of Regents authorized the establishment of a graduate program, in 1947, granting Masters Degree in Home Economics and Elementary Education. In 1948, the State University of New York was established, and PSTC became a unit of this system. As one of the four units offering a graduate program, another name change occurred. Now, students attended the State University Teachers ' College (SUTC). The establish- ment of the University System gave Plattsburgh more dignity, as well as freedom, within the support of the parent organization. Now Plattsburgh had more motivation than ever to keep improving itself. In 1949, well-planned programs for off-campus student teach- ing were implemented in the Home Economics and Elementary Education departments. Cooperating cen- ters were chiefly in North-eastern New York State, with one center each in the Albany and Westchester Areas. 41 Outside of the academic area, the post-war time proved fruitful for the social life of the students. In 1945, Twin Valleys, which was, at that time, 635 acres of forest near Lewis, N. Y., was purchased with fundings from the new Benevolent and Educational Association. Gradually some land was cleared and buildings were erected. Twin Valleys provided a place for students to get outdoors and feel the lure of nature. The Benevolent and Educational Association expanded on its own, and by the end of the 1960s, its duties included the supervision of the College Bookstore and the College Food Service. About 1967 the Association ' s duties, such as check cashing and operating a college bus, was taken over by the Faculty Student Association, which became the College Auxiliary Service in the Fall of 1975. The students started organizing themselves in the late 1940s. Soon after becoming SUTC, Plattsburgh students joined efforts with Champlain College students to host the first Winter Weekend. In 1949 the students adopted a foster child from France, another example of the students ' desire to help other people. Dr. Ward, the man who had led the students at Plattsburgh successfully through so many difficult situations, became quite ill in October of 1951. He recovered sufficiently to return to his post, but he decided to take a leave of absence. In February 1952, on his way back to Plattsburgh for SUTC ' s inspection Twin Valleys — Summer ot 1948 Twin Valleys — Summer ol Nineteen forty-eight 127 Coun St. by the Middle States Association ' s rating t4am, his condition worsened, and he died in Montreal ' s Neurological Institute on February 22. Dr. Edward Redcay, who was Dean of the College, became the Acting President of SUTC upon Dr. Ward ' s death. Dr. Redcay ably guided the school in its provision of education. In 1952 he suggested that a Marriage and Family Relations course be required for all under- graduates, which later came into effect for a short period of time. During Dr. Redcay ' s administration, the students undertook several artistic endeavors. Carl Englehart, George Yokum, and Arnold Caswell combined their talents to guide the students in their production of the musical Brigadoon. The Footlighter ' s, a dramatic group, presented two programs during the 1952-53 academic year. A faculty art exhibition was started in the Art Gallery in Hawkins Hall ' s north corridor. The Science Fair became an annual event to display the work of selected students. Although Dr. Angell ' s appointment as President of College occurred in October 1953, Dr. Redcay retained the acting post until Dr. Angell ' s arrival in 1954. Two very important events occurred in 1953. During the summer twenty French and Danish students visited the Pittsburgh campus for ten days. In October of that year a French student enrolled in SUTC; at that time the experiment in international living was a novel act, but today the presence of foreign students is quite commonplace and a very enriching experience for all. Everyone ' s appreciation of Dr. Redcay ' s endeavours was shown during Red K day ceremonies honouring the out- going Acting President. Macdonough Hall Recreation Room, West Wing. 1955 ' ■A ' Dr. Angell, Mr. Harry P. Kehoe and Dr. Breen (from right to left) at the Laying of the Feinberg Library Cornerstone. Dr. George Angell was officially welcomed as Presi- dent by faculty and students on February 2, 1954. During his administration, which spanned the next twenty years, the college underwent a period of unprecendented growth, both physical and intel- lectual. Dr. Angell ' s ideals and perception stimulated this growth while easing th e resulting tensions making this period one of the most successful in the college ' s history. During the early fifties, the college was still a teachers college, its graduates being either teachers or nurse- teachers. Hawkins Hall was officially named and in the same year, on October 4, 1955, Ward Hall was also named and occupied. The Campus School existed in the form of what was called the Laboratory School and was located in Ward Hall. The living conditions and campus life of the students differed greatly from those of today. Macdonough Hall opened in 1951 as a women ' s residence and was the only dormitory on campus until 1958. The College Union was located in Macdonough Hall, where stu- dent waitresses served family style meals to their fellow students. Other students found housing in private homes or in resident houses. Conway Hall, a women ' s residence, once stood next to Macdonough; Wells Court, the men ' s residence, is located on the corner of Wells and Court Streets and is now used as student apartments. These halls were ruled by a resident board and were overseen by house mothers. The lack of a centralized residence area did not hinder social activities however, and the sense of class unity was much stronger than it is today. Each class had its indi- vidual blazer, officers and faculty advisor. A week of hazing of the freshman class by the sophomores was traditional, including beanies, courts, and a tug-of-war across the College Pond, junior and Senior proms were held, the queens being crowned on a float in the center of the pond. The pond was also a source of fund raising for Delta Kappa Delta; in the spring of 1960, the fra- ternity offered $.10 boat rides across it. Upon taking office. Dr. Angell recognized the in- evitable changes to come and tried to anticipate them. He was dedicated: To the kind of education needed in a world threatened by racial tensions, economic imbalances, colonialism, aggression, fear . . . a world in which people do not seem actively committed to the pursuit of human dignity for all. Dr. Angell ' s philosophy was that this challenge could be met by the college but that it would require growth, revision, and a broadening of perspectives. Education, he felt, should be for the national purpose, being a creative process, not an indoctrination. In the last fifteen years of his administration he initiated and completed many programs to achieve this goal. At first inspection, the most evident change of this period was the physical growth of the college campus. Beginning in 1956, and again in 7962, five year ex- pansion programs were drawn up in order to provide adequate facilities for the increasing enrollment. The low rise dormitories, Saranac dining hall, and the physical education building were completed in the early part of the sixties, while the additional dormi- tories and the educational and administrative buildings were completed in the latter part of the decade. Con- struction of the lodge at Twin Valleys had been com- pleted in the fifties, and this facility served as an integral part of many social functions. This development was possible through the cooperation of the New York 44 4, i v Women ' s Dormitory, address unknown. State Housing Finance Agency and the State University Construction Fund which was created by the state legislature in 7962. The Housing Finance Agency can authorize the issuing of bonds and notes by the Construction Board; this venture in turn is self- liquidating as the University leases each structure, with the rentals being sufficient to discharge the in- debtedness. A closer examination shows that the academic growth was the most striking aspect of this period. In 7967, (he college was renamed the State University College of New York at Plattsburgh. Along with this new title came the institution of a liberal arts program and extensions of secondary education into the fields of math, social science, science, and English. New majors which have since been recognized include: Administrative Science; Anthropology; Art; Behavioral Science; Canadian Studies; Computer Science; Com- munications; Child and Family Services; Earth Sciences; Economics; Environmental Science; Food and Nu- trition; Foreign Languages; Health Education; LA. Biology, Chemistry, and Physics; Medical Technology; Philosophy; Political Science; Psychology; Speech Pathology and Audiology; Sociology; and Theater Arts. In addition to these major areas of concentration, minor areas of concentration include Criminal justice and Minority Studies, with special emphasis given to Afro-American and Latin American Studies. Inde- pendent Study, Continuing Education and a Graduate School program not only complete the program, but add a sharp contrast to the limited curriculum of the Teachers College of 1948. To increase student awareness and understanding, Angell continuously worked for increased inter- national communication. In February of 1961, the college was chosen as the center for experimentation in Teaching for World Education, sponsored by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Edu- cation and the National Council for Social Studies. Dr. Hunt accepted the post of Chairman of the Committee on Education for International Understanding. In 7959 the student exchange program began with the Men ' s Teachers College in Amman, Jordan, Dr. john Deeb acting as director of the project. By 1963, Dr. Englehart was advisor to 21 foreign students from countries in Central and South America, Europe, Africa and Asia. This post was later taken over by Mrs. Grace Reese, who acted as an advisor, from 7967 to 1974. A unique pro- gram in the state system, the college offers a semester studies in Montreal in conjunction with McGill University, Sir George Williams, Loyola College, and the University of Montreal; another program involves an exchange with Chester College in England. Furthermore, through the visiting student program of the State University system, a Plattsburgh student may take advantage of any such program offered by any of the other colleges in the system. To encourage the exceptional student, Dr. Angell appointed Dr. Edward Redcay as the coordinator of Programs for Talented and Honors Students. In the late sixties, Plattsburgh became the only college in New York State to receive funding for faculty research, stu- dent experimental work and institutional support grants by the National Science Foundation. Through its experimental teacher preparation program, the N.S.F. was responsible for the preparation of secondary school teachers of science, mathematics and behavioral science. The land at Miner Center owned by the College was used during the fifties and early sixties by students working primarily on independent study. Later, th is became the center of the college ' s environmental studies and research program. A third area of emphasis of Dr. Angell ' s adminis- tration was that of community service. The college constitutes one of the three foundation blocks of Plattsburgh ' s economy; disregarding moral reasoning, this alone necessitates a major commitment. One of the first services offered by the college was that of the Annual Science Fair. This event occurred annually until recently served to encourage the young scientists of the North Country. The Economics Workshop held by the college proved very effective. It began one of the first attempts in the nation to introduce the subject into elementary education and was critical in the formation of the Economic Education Council of Northern New York State. Again in 7962 the college became the first in the nation to initiate project Reach (Rural Edu- cation Assistance for the Culturally Handicapped). Continued later in the Upward Bound, Outreach and the New City Programs, encouragement, tutoring and aid was extended throughout the area, including the inmates of Adirondack Correctional Treatment and Evaluation Center. The creativity and talent of the students has gained increased recognition. Dr. George Yokum played an essential role in the development of the Footlighters, the theatrical club of the college in earlier years. Dr. Yokum ' s ideas and motivating force helped to build the foundations of what is now the New Theater Associa- tion. The N.T.A. is now responsible for presenting theater of professional quality throughout the year, covering the entire spectrum of available material. The Forensics Union, with the guidance of Mr. A. R. Montanaro, jr. and Dr. Melvin Donaho not only has won many honors for the college in state competition, but has also succeeded in recent years in placing in national competition. The students have also been responsible for publishing several literary publi- cations; in recent years these included: Vat; Seven; Et Cetera; and (he Z. Piatt Almanac. In 7967, the Cardinal won a National Award for its cover. The athletic program at the college has also ex- perienced great development from the time when only clubs existed. In 7956 the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics accepted the school as a mem- ber, and in the spring of that year the Cardinals re- mained one of the two unbeaten teams in the state. Sports which have become varsity teams include: baseball; football; soccer; hockey; track; men ' s gymnastics; tennis; golf; and swimming. In 7963 Neil Sessilman was named to the All American Baseball team, and in 1973 jim Powers made All American in swimming. In several seasons the teams have gone on to national competition. In 1972, Dr. Angell ' s desire for improved inter- national communication combined with the world of sports when Plattsburgh State was awarded the dis- Students waiting for bus outside of Hawkins Hall «2SSSS 46 Unction of being the host university for the seventh biennial World University Winter Cames. It was the first time the games were held in the United States. The events were co-hosted by Lake Placid. The opening of the Games coincided with the opening of the field house complex on upper Rugar Street. Members of the Federation Internationale du Sport Universiade or F.I.S.U. came from 80 countries, numbering over 600 young athletes. The highlight of the games in Pitts- burgh was the Russian Hockey team; their superb play- ing led them to victory over both the American and Canadian teams. Also held at the ice arena was the International Skating Exhibition. In Lake Placid the special ski jumping at the Intervales ski jump was most spectacular, while the performance of Jennie Walsh in the figure skating competition was perhaps the most graceful. She was awarded the gold medal and repre- sented the U.S. The exciting atmosphere created by international athletic competition will again be ex- perienced by the Pittsburgh campus when the facilities will serve to house the United States Olympic team before the games in Montreal this summer. Each of these opportunities affords the campus a unique chance for international exchange and dialogue, experiences that will long be remembered. With the ever enlarging enrollment and the changing nature of the college, the profile of the average student on campus during the last ten years is quite different than those of the past. One of the more traditional aspects of student life which reached its highest development in the sixties was the Greek organiza- tions. The Greeks were present on campus as early as 1892; this is the founding date for the local chapters of both the Alpha Kappa Phi and the Phi Kappa Chi sororities. Delta Kappa Delta is the oldest fraternity on campus, its founding date being 1927. The Alpha Delta Theta sorority began at Plattsburgh in 1925. Two fraternities began in the fifties — Pi Alpha Nu in 1953, and Theta Kappa Beta in 7959. The last three Greek organizations on campus were formed in the sixties and seventies. Sigma Tau Sigma began in 1964. The following year Theta Alpha Lamba organized and they were recognized in 7966. The last organization to be formed was Psi Epsilon Chi in 1970. These organi- zations perform a vital function on campus and in the community. Through individual action or through the Interfraternity Council, they often provide a needed sense of unity on an increasingly diverse campus. Much of the spirit and organization necessary for campus wide activities, such as Homecoming Week- end, is provided by the Greeks. The first Winter Week- end was held in 1956, and the first Homecoming Weekend was held in 7960. The President ' s Cup was first awarded in 7959. The Greeks also serve the com- munity of Plattsburgh with various charity drives, the sponsoring of Blood Drives, and other services. In addition to these organizations, honorary organi- zations in the departments of Home Economics, Nursing, Education, and Psychology have local chapters here. The students on campus during the sixties found themselves having to function in an increasingly com- plex world. As the campus grew, classes disappeared but the individual appeared more and more. The students began being more actively concerned about the world that existed outside their campus. They sought to expose themselves to as many ideas as possible. Guests included: William Kunstler; Abbie Hoffman; Sander Vanocur; dance companies and visiting theater groups; John Dean; Robert Frost; Ralph Nader; and Alice Cooper. Most importantly, they became aware and they cared. In 7966, on Friday, November 12, a Viet Nam Teach-In and Forum was held in the student union. Concern and unrest continued as did the war. The year 7977 proved to be the most disturbing as students were gunned down at Kent State; the resulting protest at Plattsburgh State was most noteworthy as it was led by President Angell. Graves appeared on the front lawn of Hawkins Hall and the involvement of the student body was evident everywhere. This continued into 1973 with another march on the federal office building, this time led by the Viet Nam Veterans Against the War. Although the student body of Plattsburgh was as concerned as many others across the nation, its campus was not marred by the violence so characteristic of this period due to the empathy and guidance of its Presi- dent. In 1974, a tree was planted in front of the Kehoe Administration building in memory of the students at Kent State. The administration of the college changed in 1974 with the retirement of Dr. Angell. Dr. Joseph Burke was chosen as the new president of the college. President Burke has a strong sense of student orien- tation, and in the past two years as President, he has sought to increase the communication between stu- dents and the administration. While many aspects of the college and college life have remained the same, each decade must address itself to a new set of prob- lems. Students of the seventies are perhaps the most aware and most well prepared; they may also be among the most crowded as enrollment reached a record high. The essential element of the college is its growth — its continual rediscovery of that which is around it. Present-day Hawkins in the spring. Footnotes 7. Cooper, Frank A. For two hours the lilled to capacity Fieldhouse was im- mersed in the talents of this exceptional artist. His one man show could only be described as ' fantastic ' . Taylor an artist of poetry, music, comedy had the audi- ence on their feet calling for more. And more they got, he happily obliged and the arena was filled with the sounds of Fire and Rain and Sweet Baby James . How could anyone be dissatisfied with the likes of James Taylor. NT A THAT CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON That Championship Season opened the NTA Fall season, October 15-19. It concerned the nostolgic reunion of a coach and four members of a trophy win- ning high school basketball team. In this supposedly happy setting these men expose themselves as men whose lives were once fresh as mountain spring and now resemble the filth of a city gutter. The story of how winners become losers is the story of That Champion- ship Season . It was a funny, tragic story about dis- contented tragic men in a corrupting tragic society. Those who attended received a startling insight of ihemselves and those around them from a talented cast under the skillful direction of Charles Kline. 91 ' CELEBRATION ' For those theater goers who enjoy the levity of a musical, Plattsburgh students had the avant garde musical CELE- BRATION . There was . . . comedy . . . tragedy . . . the ridiculous . . . and the absurd. 3 92 The prisoners of Plattsburgh enjoy Neil Simon ' s Prison- er of Second Avenue . The play directed by Deborah Tomlinson was full of the intelligent humor characteristic of Simon as he allows us to laugh at ourselves. Mel Edison played by Ron Smart was superbly comical yet with a pathos as he ' bangs back ' at the world for throwing him into that growing unemployed population. Edna (Sandie B. Silver), his wife, sternly sympathetic to Mel ' s situation takes control until she herself feels the growing pressure of a troubled world. They realize that they must unite their forces to survive and maintain their sanity in this insane world. All and all NTA presented an enjoyable evening for their audience. The evening performance was geared for the more mature audience, in addition to Peter and the Wolf included a sec- tion featuring orchastrations saluting the American Bicen- tennial. From October 27-29, 1975 the Margalit Dance Company took up a residence at PSUC. They offered classes in tech- nique, non-verbal communica- tion and choreography. The highlight of their stay here at Plattsburgh was a performance at the Hartman theater entitled Through the Garden . These artists conveyed a reverence for the human body and their unfaltering dedication to life was truly inspiring. 94 The Robber Bridegroom Arms and The Man On December 4, 1975 ' The Acting Company ' , called the finest repetory company in New York City , began a ihree day engagement here at Plattsburgh State. The company performed George Bernard Shaw ' s Arms and :ie Man , and the musical The Robber Bridegroom . As its popularity increased, this sport moved down across the Canadian border into New York. The first competitive games were held in 1969-1970 when the Northern Broomball League was established. Broomball came to PSUC three years ago. Each year its popularity attracts more par- ticipants (50 male and 52 female teams this year) and more spectators. The rules of the game closely follow those of ice hockey. The major penalties are icing, off-sides, and personal penalties for undue rough conduct. The equipment consists of a rubber ball about six inches in diameter, a sawed-off broomstick (with the remaining bristles taped up), and rubber soled shoes (sneak- ers, broomball sneakers, or anything that tends to provide the most traction between the player and the ice). Both on Campus Dorm Floors and Off Campus Groups Participated in this Exciting Sport. 193 Concentration and Determination are Requirements for Hockey 198 SEASONS RECORD Royal Military College Elmira Concordia Royal Military College Champlain Brockport Ithaca Canton Elmira Elmira Royal Military College Union Concordia Champlain John Abbott Potsdam Union Loyola Norwich Bois-de-Boulogne Potsdam 4 4 6 3 2 7 6 7 5 3 11 3 6 2 3 10 10 8 8 3 PSUC PSUC PSUC PSUC PSUC PSUC PSUC PSUC PSUC PSUC PSUC PSUC PSUC PSUC PSUC PSUC PSUC PSUC PSUC PSUC PSUC 8 3 4 6 9 7 4 7 6 1 16 2 13 8 4 11 2 1 3 7 Matt Wescott. FORENSIC UNION he Pittsburgh State Foren- sic Union opened its sixth season of activity with a number of on-campus programs in- cluding its annual home tournament which brought forensic units from Vermont. Dartmouth. Penn State. Princeton, and West Point (among others) to Pittsburgh. The Union also initiated a series of International Exhibition Debates which faced the Pittsburgh Varsity against teams from Oxford University (Englandl and University of Tokyo (Japan). The Forensic Union membership experienced its fourth year of sig- nificant growth in as many years which allowed for increased activity for the Union ' s non-competitive pro- grams (College Readers and Speak- ers Bureau) as well as the Tourna- ment units. Members sponsored and participated in more than 40 on and off campus events during the Fall semester alone. The tournament team gathered major awards and honors from tournaments at Niagara University. Vermont. Southern Con- necticut State, and Penn State (to mention a few) and accumulated more than 35 awards including 8 first and 16 second place individual and team honors. Notable among the changes in the 1975-76 Forensic squad was the addition of a debate coach to com- pliment the efforts of Forensic Di- rector. A. R. Montanaro. Jr. This addition has strengthened the squad ' s productivity considerably. Besides winning major team awards, the Varsity Debate teams (Michael Costelloe and Tim Hentschel: Lois Gasparro and Terry LaValley) had to defeat teams from Notre Dame. Penn State. Harvard. Princeton. Boston University, and West Point to do so. During the Spring Semester. The Pittsburgh Forensic Union will be sponsoring and hosting the New York State Forensic Championship Tournament and the Northeast Regional Championships, Organization Officers for 1975-76 were: Tim Hentschel. The Student Newspaper CAit IMAL P IMTS VolymgJ19 Number 76 State University College at at Pittsburgh February 1 776 CARDINAL POINTS IN 6th YEAR OF PRINT! Cardinal Points Goes Through Many Changes and Still Survives Cardinal Points is now in its sixth year of publication under its present name. Dur- ing these six years.it has been the goal of Cardinal Points to continue its expan- sion both quantitatively as well as qualitatively. C.P. has faced tremendous obsta- cles in its drive for improv- ing its service to the campus and community. She has staggered at times, but never has she remained motion- less. The past year has bore witness to the most radical changes in Cardinal Points history. Though this history is still in the making, and with many crucial decisions and problems yet to be made and overcome, it seems as if Cardinal Points will indeed come through as a shining Northern Light. Cardinal Points under the leadership of Ellen Lent and John Connors reached new heights in layout design and newspaper quality while at the same time keeping peace with the publisher. September oP75 found a new Editorial Board in an extremely precarious posit- ion. With massive overex- penditures accumulated ov- er the previous year under the premise of unlimited expansion, the new Board had to face last semester with a collapsing budget. Budgetary miscalculations on the part of the publisher in regard to a new SI 2.000 Varityper Computer furth- ered the problem even more. It was under the leadership of Mike Sabetelle that Card- inal Points began an except- ional expansion program in terms of quantity while at the same time fighting off publisher demands forecon- omic purse tightening. It was a bold move which, unfort- unately, led to disaster when the Student Association. in an act of desperation, froze the budget of C.P. The Bus- iness Department under the leadership of John O ' Don- nell forsaw many of these problems but could do little, politically speaking, to un- freeze the C.P. budget. It is a credit to the Business Depart- ment that Cardinal Points suffered as little as it did Under John ' s supervision. Cardinal Points set up its first efficient billing and accounting system while at the same time increasing advertising revenues. Card- inal Points is still struggling for budgetary equilibrium and it is unfortunate that many areas of the paper were neglected while the Editorial Board fought to keep the paper afloat. In December of ' 75, Mike Sabetelle resigned as Editor and Chief and Dave Hennes- sy did likewise as News Ed- itor. Norman Radow. the Advertising Manager, filled the position of Treasurer left vacant when Jan Dragoon ascended to the post of Edit- or and Chief. Terrcnce the Terrible Marshall . John O ' Donnell, and Michelle Carpentier remaind in their positions as Managing Edit- or, Business Manager, and Executive Secretary .respec- tively. February of 1976 has re- vealed a new. larger, and more dedicated staff, a staff which will see this newspap- er through the trying times ahead so that one day she can justly be called the Nor- thern Light. Michele Carpentier Secretary Michele. or as her friends call her. Mitch, has been with the Cardinal Points staff longer than any other staff member. During the entire period she has served with dedication, devotion and dependability-traits so essential to a smooth run- ning operation. During our crisis she has always pulled through with her legal ex- pertise as well as her calm Cha y outlook. As a superb typesetter she has helped the newspaper meet deadlines that could not otherwise be met. A great personality, great tasting lasanga. and an inspiration in the office. | t IT RIAL | 1 - Terrence Wells Marshall Managing Editor Terry Marshall joined the Cardinal Points staff in the Fall. 1974 Semester. He be- came Ad Layout Manager in the Spring as well as writer oi the College Center Enig- ma both semesters. Terry was elected Managing Edit- or in Spring 1975. assuming duties in September. During the Summer of ' 75. Terry was instrumental in the pur- chase of the varityper for S 1 2,000, which resulted in EDITOR Many changes racked the campus, affecting Cardinal Points as well. Changes in personnel, finances, and ov- erall views of the paper ' s function. We answered qu- estions concerning our cre- dibility to the best of our ability. Through the hard- ships we encountered the first semester the staff be- came a cohesive group stri- ving to show a skeptical stu- dent government how good we really could be. A major reshuffle of the Editorial Board in Decem- ber resulted in the loss of Michael Sabatelle and Da- vid Hennessy. but at the same time we gained the expertise of Tom Robotham Jan Dragoon and Norman Radow. We even went through advisors! Luckily a few die-hards sur- vived the storm. I don ' t know where we ' d be without the financial wiz-bomb John O ' . speed demon typist Mic- hele Carpentier, and the man with the tapes, borders and external sage of wis- dom. Terrence Marshall. I ' d like to take this oppor- tunity, in this lasting perio- dical (newspapers seem to get thrown away...),to thank the staff of Cardinal Points for all their time, work and loyalty; it was deeply appre- ciated. I ' m hoping all that read this will remember their fine effort. Thanks! JED John O ' Donnell Business Manager John joined the staff of Cardinal Points in the ad- vertising department. In January of 1975 he was ap- pointed Advertising Mana- ger. In the Spring of 1975 he was elected to the position of Business Manager which he still occupies. Throughout his two years on the newspaper he was awarded with two Cardinal Points scholarships. He is co-chairman of the Econo- mics Club on campus and is a member of the Program Committee for the N.Y. Ec- onomic Convention which will be held in April ' 76. John ' s specialized concen- tration is in Economics. He will also be co-chairman of Winter Weekend Beerblast. Norman Radow Treasurer In September of ' 75 Norm joined Cardinal Points. Be- ginning in the Business De- partment as a member of the advertising staff, he quickly attatined the position of advertising manager. As ad- vertising manager. Norm brought in an unpreceden- ted amount of advertising cutting Cardinal Points ' cost by I 3. Terry ' s contribution to Cardinal Points in terms of time and effort, has greatly enhanced the coordination of all work on the paper, as well as commanded the res- pect and cohesiveness of the newspaper ' s staff. revenue, bringing in a n a- mount unequalled in Car- dinal Points ' history. In December of ' 75 Norm ac- quired the position of Trea- surer and is now in the run- ning for Business Manager. Besides his work at Car- dinal Points, Norm is Presi- dent of B ' nai Brith-Hillel, a member of the Intercolleg- iate Athletic Board, finds interest in participating in the Finance Board, is on the Communications Board and enjoys working on various SA subcommittees. Thomas Robotham News Editor Tom joined the staff of Cardinal Points in Spring of 1975 as a feature writer who was primarily interested in doing record reviews. In the Fall of ' 75 he accepted the offer to become feature edi- tor, replacing Dave Hen- nessy who had recently be- come News Editor. At the end of the Fall semester, Dave decided that he would leave school, thereby leaving Tom a new position once again. Tom is an English major from Staten Island and cur- rently lives on campus. Be- sides his responsibilities at Cardinal Points he is on the Gymnastics Team and is a Disc Jockey for WPLT. Dr. LaMariana and Orchestra The Miner Center program is rich in hands-on experiences such as alternate energy projects at Miner Institute farm and quality-of-life studies in the Clinton County rural environment. Activities such as horseback riding and cross-country skiing round out the program and make tor a lively outdoors semester. Speaking before the alumni and their friends who had gathered for the annual Homecoming Banquet, the 102 year old Winch, member of the Plattsburgh Normal School class of 1893, shared his prescription for a long and healthy life. His prescription, he said was based on a sound mind and body and perfection of spirit. I continually consult with greater minds than my own; both human and divine. And if I meet a person who thinks otherwise, it is a challenge for me to prove to him my sin- cerity. When the time comes for me to depart and I can be of no more use to those that I love said Winch, my hope is that I shall hear the sounds of laughter rather than the sounds of weeping. And I hope that they will say about me, ' I am glad that he was here ' , rather than ' I am sorry he is gone ' . 235 Phi Kappa Chi The Clionian Sorority was founded as a sisterhood 104 years ago on the basis of sisterhood and service. Each Clio girl is an individual, yet each individuals ' quality is bonded together to achieve our common goals of social activities, fund raising and service to the community. This past year has been an active one for the Clios. We have been active with the March of Dimes, the Heart Association, the Vilas Nursing Home, and are currently working as v olunteers in the hospital. On campus we have participated in weekends, NTA Artist Series and counting ballots for the SA elections. Last Fall we won first place for our Homecoming float and for the Scholastic Cup. Clios are a group of individuals who enjoy working with and for people not only on campus but also in the community. Pi Alpha Nu 236 Unity in Brotherhood since 1957. A campus cross-section of men banded together in 1957 with academic excellence as one of the key attributes. Pi Alpha Nu is the second oldest fraternity. The brothers have strived to involve themselves in different campus activities, ie. members of the S.A. government, radio station, Cardinal Points and various other campus services. Alpha Kappa Phi Ago had its beginnings in Pittsburgh in 1892 as a literary group called the Philamathesion Society. Soon after, it was granted the colors blue, white and gold and its charter as the Delta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Phi. The first home for the Agos was purchased in 1926 at 21 Wells Street. Later, a new house was formed at 150 Brinkerhoff Street and in 1970, the Agos moved to their present location at 66 Broad Street. Ago has been active in community and college affairs since its formation and holds to the values of tradition, individuality and unity. Its past has been filled with good times, enthusiasm and love that has kept it alive for many years and will keep it going for many more years to come. Theta Kappa Beta founded 1959 237 Alpha Delta Theta Alpha Delta Theta sorority was formed on the Pittsburgh campus in 1925. In the past year, the sorority has been celebrating its golden anniversary. The sorority is as strong as it was fifty years ago. At the present time we have approximately forty members. All the girls are individuals striving for a common goal of unity among its members. The girls in the sorority work on many college and community projects throughout the year. Most of our projects deal with charitable organizations. As a sorority we also partake in many of the college ' s intramural sports. Theta Alpha Lambda 1 The Sorority began as an idea developed by five girls in Novem- ber of 1965. The sorority was recognized in September of 1966 by the International Council of the State University College of Pittsburgh. Since then we have participated in all typical sorority functions such as rushing and pledging, Homecoming Floats, snow sculptures, weekends with fraternities, Parents ' Weekend, Senior Banquet and active par- ticipation in International Coun- cil. The Sorority colors are antique gold and navy blue and the chry- santhemum is the sorority flower. We wear a gold pinky ring with the Greek letters Theta Alpha Lambda engraved on it. Psi Epsilon Chi was first organized in 1968. Founded on the basic principles of Individuality, Citizenship, Leadership and Personal Growth, the Fraternity has devel- oped into a closely unified group striving to serve both college and community. In the past the Fraternity has taken an active role with its contributions to the Can- cer Society, Heart Fund, Campus Blood Drives, March of Dimes as well as many other worthwhile community projects. We have been recognized for our community service by being awarded the President ' s Cup for the past two years. The Fraternity members are active parti- cipants in all Intramural sports. But at the same time we have also proved ourselves academically by being awarded the Scho- lastic Cup the past two semesters in a row. Also Psi Ep is unique in owning its own Fraternity House at 72 Broad Street which serves as the focal point for the Fraternity Brothers social events. If I had to do it all over again, I would have done it all different, and I ' m kind of glad I didn ' t. The Historical Section, I ' m proud of, and special thanks go to Laura, Pam and Wilma. The senior section, compiled by Carol Phinney, I ' ve yet to see and I pray that it came out as well as we had planned, and even then, only you can be the judge of that. Looking at the opposite page, in one glance, will tell the reader that Steve Cowper needs no introduction, his work is the book, with few exceptions. Lynn Bodwell, Steve ' s friend, is also seen throughout the book by her excellent layouts and copy arrangements. Both Marilyn Nagy and Cynthia Weiss should be given special commendation awards for insuffer- able odds. Marilyn for her Sports section, which, as last year is very well done, and Cynthia for her Entertainment section, where pictures were harder to find than a needle in a haystack. Patty Harrison, the ogre of the finance board, I must thank for keeping me within my budget and even spending less than what we had . . . and that ' s something for me! My real appreci- ation goes to Bill Sloane, our publisher ' s representative, which, without whose help, this book would not be here. Dr. and Mrs. C. D. Marshall of Swanton, Vermont kept my sanity intact, at least as much as it will ever be, and I sincerely thank them for that. Mary-Beth, Carol and a good bottle of gin get my next notes of appreciation, without any of which it would have been more difficult to put out this book. And last, but least of all least, I thank the students of Pitts- burgh, 750 of which signed up for senior portraits, and several thousand of which bought this book, expressing an interest in their years at Pittsburgh and with whom I ' ve shared many memories.
