In the firsts column fall the first year for President Joseph Burke, the use of the College Center, an FM license for radio sta- tion WPLT, snow for Winter Weekend (a first in many years anyway.) The lasts side weighs heavy with the last year for Vice President Bill Flynt, last major construction for the campus in the new library, last year for football, last year for the five-division hierarchy of faculty. It was the year of the Blackout, the year of student involve- ment in campus issues, i.e. football and the contracting of John Dean, the year of the S.A. budget deficit. But in as many ways as this year was different, in more ways it was similar to any other college year. Students went to class, studied, loafed, drank beer, ate pizza, saw concerts, saw movies, got involved or remained passive, made acquaintances, made lasting friends. We hope this book will help rekindle memories of YOUR year and help remind you of the friendships you ' ve made in the many decades to come. skm President Executive Vice President Vice President for Finances Vice President for Activities Vice President for Student Services Senators Campbell I Lcavitt ie Williams lellerhouse arr Baric eth Broadhurst i Courtney Anne Cox as Crosby Daly ragoon lei Forcier Gitlin ieHaynes m Herman Kane McNiff irvin Testa Birge lew Blaustein Ralbovsky idrane las Stamm Student Association Officers Joseph Quartuccio David Kalet Paul Mannino Solomon Irving J. How can she possibly stand to work in that office, with all that commotion? People constantly run in and out, interrupt her time and again to ask how to spell this, how to run that machine. Even Mrs. P. herself admits she must sometimes cram a lot of work in between the hours of 8 to 10 a.m. to get things accomplished. But she loves every minute of it. And the students love her. The duties connected with her job are so many and varied they defy description. To say she is Den Mother to twenty-five kids comes pretty close to the truth. But Mrs. P. wouldn ' t trade jobs with anyone else. After six years as the SA sec- retary she figures she has the greatest position on the PSUC campus. Bob Medve Officially the SA Technical Director, Bob Medve holds a position created only last year. Bob acts as liaison and coordinates all technical considerations for touring companies, con- certs, speakers, to arrive on campus. He sees that all SA campus activities, excluding NTA, are lit, and repairs, maintains, and purchases all SA lighting equipment. 13 Rich Roy. |im Cambell, Slan Opperman, Scon BirRe, Dave Shanley, Mike Murray, Barb Verhagen, Nita Perrelle, Donna Croker Orientation Leaders Orientation Leaders are chosen after a series of interviews early in the year. They encompass a wide variety of majors, and are chosen to help the new stu- dents gain a comfortable feeling about P.S.U.C. The orientation leaders work through the entire summer, aiding in planning schedules and familiarizing students with the campus during each new group ' s three-day stay in Pitts- burgh. Various subcommittees take on the work of planning con- certs, and coffeehouses. The Com- mittee has provided bands in the Pub, a Faculty-Student night, Cof- feehouses in the ballroom with homemade cheesecake, and is in charge of such courtesies as the magazine rack at the Information Desk from which any of several magazines may be borrowed. Starting off September with a picnic with the BOCES kids Circle K initiated its program as a community service organization. The Homecoming Donut sale is well remembered, with a sizeable amount of the profits going to the Heart Fund. Without a doubt the Dannemora Social and Nursing Home party proved invaluable in giving the club a chance to fulfill its social action. To top it all off, the Fall semester ended with Santa Claus, exchanging gifts, friendships and reminiscing past accom- plishment s. For Spring semester a fund raising for both the Red Cross and the Heart Fund, entertaining at the Clinton County Nursing Home made the group ' s efforts worthwhile. A Speaker ' s Forum on depres- sion and participating in Dannemora ' s socials were also on the agenda. Overall, the Circle K Club has become strong this year. It has gone from the weakest club in the state to possibly the strongest. CIRCLE K CLUB Front Row: Andy P. Shaver. John P. Vasquez, Sue P. Smith, Back Row: Chris P. Savino, 8. ). P. Truax, Richard P. Birth Control Information Center The Birth Control Information Center, located in the Infirmary, provides information services for stu- dents concerning contraception, conception, abortion, and venereal disease. The center sponsors VD clinics, speakers. It provides counseling and referrels to students desiring this service. Forensic Union The Forensic Union is a group of students interested in competitive public speaking. Each year the Union travels to schools in New York, New England, and along the Atlantic seaboard as far south as Virginia, to com- pete in debate and a variety of individual speech events such as oral interpretation, persuasive and informative speaking, extemporaneous and impromptu speaking, and after dinner speaking. Early this year Pittsburgh ' s Forensic Union received a first place sweepstakes award for their work during the 1973-74 school year, for schools with an enrollment of 2500 to 8000. This national award recognized the high quality of work dis- played by the many PSUC students competing in tour- naments last year. Besides its competitive work, Foren- sics also participates in Oral Interp festivals and in the Legislative Assembly held in Albany. It provides work- shops and judges for high school speech programs in the North Country area. Speakers ' Forum makes stu- dent speeches available on a wide variety of topics for use as programs for organizations in the area. And this year PSUC debaters were heard on WPLT debating the issues on the football referend um and the contracting of John Dean. Eta Zeta Affiliated with the national Speech Hearing student organization, Eta Zeta promotes the speech hearing sciences. While not devoid of social activities, Eta Zeta on the Plattsburgh campus provides more serious functions as well, sponsor- ing hearing screenings for Senior Citizen clubs throughout the North Country area and bringing speakers in the field to the PSUC students. Pi Kappa Delta Pi Kappa Delta is an honorary fraternal organization for in- tercollegiate debaters, competitive individual speakers, non- classroom audience speakers and instructors teaching courses in oral communication. Its purpose is to promote scholarship and a spirit of harmony and cooperation in forensics, thereby doing much for the betterment of public speaking in colleges all over the country. Active chapters are located on more than 270 college and university campuses. Schools in Pi Kappa Delta are a cross section of the outstanding institutions of the nation and range in enrollment from some of the smaller liberal arts colleges to some of the largest universities. After many years of work toward an FM license, WKGO finally received the license this year. The new call letters became WPLT after trying several, only to find that they were in use at some other FM station in the nation. The station also was available to listeners with a cable TV hookup in the city of Plattsburgh. Interfraternity Council Each fraternity and sorority on this campus has a different set of goals and stan- dards which they set up for themselves. The Interfraternal Council attempts to aide the individual Creeks by helping them to obtain these goals, as well as to regulate pledging and rushing. The council consists of two members from each organization plus five officers. Some of the main concerns this year have been more active involvement in college activities, more student involvement in com- munity affairs, and promoting more positive feelings towards the Greeks. — Judy Bishop 43 Sealed: Laura Jones, |an Griffen, Laurie Turnbull, Kathy Kakretz, Cherl Light, Carole Prunier, Joanne Brosnan, Barb Malecki. Last minute cancellations and fill-ins were the order of the even- ing, and even the M.C. suffered the fate. Steve Bliss in his straw hat and shy style kept the show moving when WIRY ' s Dave Andrews failed to arrive. Twelve student acts, ranging from pantomime to song and dance, delighted the capacity audience in Hawkins Hall ' s large auditorium. Talent was judged by audience applause, and sheer entertainment value held great sway over their choices. First prize of $50 went to Ernest Germano for his ac- cordian act. Linda Amodeo took second place and $35 playing her teeth and singing her own songs to guitar. And the Flying Bombini Brothers (Mike Murray, Jim Campbell, and Dave Shanley) capped the show and captured the third place $15 with their life-defying tumbling act. George W. Angell returns lo Pittsburgh in Homecoming Parade. Homecoming 1974 brought ex-Pres- ident George Angell home once more, this time as a highly honored guest rather than the host. For his 20 years of outstanding dedication and service to the college, which ended in August, the Alumni Association presented him with its highest annual award. Graduates returned, too, as this marked the Silver Anniversary for the Class of 1949 and the Golden Anniver- sary for the Class of ' 24. Various groups and other classes met and reminisced at brunches and parties th roughout the weekend. For the students, Homecoming had a less sentimental meaning, but provided a time for parties, sports, and a happy spirit of togetherness as floats were built by various groups on campus. Beautiful weather and autumn color at its seasonal peak lent a background for a festive weekend for all. In opening rounds, Champlain beat Rochester, and PSUC defeated Plymouth. Consolation winner the next afternoon was Rochester Tech. In the Championship game the Cardinals bat- tled uphill all the way to nudge out Champlain. Hero of the day was Matt Wescott who not only scored the tie-breaking ninth goal for the team, but scored a total of seven goals himself. He was awarded MVP award and a place on the All-Tournament Team. Jean Dahme and Dave Willard also placed on the All-Tourney Team. J r Happiness Is A Weekend At Plattsburgh Coffee House on Ice A new event for Winter Weekend, this 3-hour skating session brought out all kinds of skaters — beginners, and even a few hockey players. Most everyone skated, but some just stood, or sat on the ice and talked. Refresh- ments and entertainment were provided for rest breaks. Bl Orientation Orientation, the pre-period for freshmen, trans- fer students, offers the opportunity to get specialized advisement from faculty members for first semester courses, a chance to meet them and other new stu- dents socially, and helps to make a new campus a bit less mysterious before the scurry of classes begins. Construction 90 92 Working in Class Working in Class 93 94 95 The Blackout The weather and faulty power cables combined to treat Pittsburgh students to an unexpected mid semester break this fall. On Wednesday evening, Novem- ber 13, the water moisture from a week of heavy rain reached a faulty cable splice in one of the two main power lines and promptly darkened all but two classroom buildings. Although mainte- nance crews were called out immediately to remedy the situation, power was not restored until late the following Sunday. Classes were cancelled for two days as a result of this incident When classes resumed on Monday, November 18, students and faculty buzzed about the loss of time, postponed tests and activities, and speculated as to how such a disaster could have happened. The buzzing continued until 9:20 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20, when the mended splices were again invaded by moisture (this time from the melting of an early, heavy snowfall) and the power failed again. This time, however, classes were not suspended; they were re- located in windowed classrooms during the day and into unaffected classrooms in the evening. Power was temporarily restored to classroom buildings by Mon- day, December 2, with plans to replace the deteriorat- ing cable during the winter break at an approximate cost of $250,000. $1 Vat 97 . 100 102 Focus on Friends Focus on Friends 103 104 Focus on Friends 109 110 Leisure Time The Legend Of The Monument In downtown Pittsburgh, in the heart of the saloon district, stands this monument, erected to honor McDonough. Doctor Hans Hirsch, Professor of History, was the guest speaker who impressed upon the some 400 graduates: to never be lightly veiled versions of your boss or professor. His theme of true honest self-expression was further expanded upon by Joseph Burke, in his first commencement as President of this college. The Doctors Hirsch and Burke ' s remarks were warmly received by the audience of deans, graduates, parents and guests who filled Hawkins Hall to capacity level. 115 Going Home ■5 ll ■ • : 116 An accumulation of wealth over four-years ' time can be hard to lake home. 117 Front Row: Pete Blv, Bob O ' Donnel, Brian Ruthfuss, Ellen Turkel, John Gnerre, lohn Leonard, led Coldfreid, Tony Haslam; Back Row: Billy Katz (Student Coach), Steve Walsh, Brian Dodge, lohn Evans, Norman Goldwire. |im Zimmons, Bruce TeaRue, Tommy Pillsworth. Dave Rihr Varsity Golf Last spring, the golf team travelled to Key Biscayne, Florida, to compete in the I.T.T. sponsored Tournament of Intercollegi- ate Champions. After winning the N.A.I. A. District 31 Cham- pionships at Rutgers (sixth win in eight years), they also travelled to Aberdeen, South Dakota to compete in the N.A.I. A. National Championships. In the fall of this school year, the team increased their impressive two-year undefeated dual record to 7-0 by defeating Siena and New Paltz. The season ended with a first place finish for the third consecutive year in the Cardinal Invitational, a third place finish in the Utica Invitational, and a second place finish in the SUNYAC Championships. Individual awards went to Mark Wilson (First Medalist) and Dave Rihm (Third Medalist) in the Cardinal Invitational. Mark Wilson and Steve Teta both received scoring medals in the SUNYAC Championships. The team set a new team scoring record on a par 72 course when they shot 305 against Siena and New Paltz. This broke the old record of 307 set at Spartanburg, South Carolina in the N.A.I. A. National Championships in 1973. Coach Joe Jastrab has a solid nucleus to continue the golfers ' winning tradition of the last eight years. 145 Season ' s Results Vermont 94.50 PlatKhurph 103 45 Roval Military Colleee 102.52 PlatKhurph I lull jUUI CI 1 134 4? A bluegrass band provid- ed the music that day in October, and students provided the entertainment. A great break from the grind of studying on the weekend. }± f it. 158 October 20, 1974 159 160 November 8, 1974 162 November 19, 1974 America November 19, 1974 163 164 November 19, 1974 November 19, 1974 165 166 John Mayall Photos by Dan Kane Dan Wagoner Dance Company In residence at Plattsburgh for a three-day stay, the Dan Wagoner Company brought to students in- terested in dance an opportunity to view and work with one of the best dancers on the modern scene, as Wagoner is described by the NY Times. Sessions began with an informal lecture and dem- onstration, continued through technique classes for beginner and for advanced dancers. And finally, the Company gave their dance concert. Wagoner has dan- ced with a number of modern dance groups including Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, and Paul Taylor, with whom he toured as a leading soloist. 168 February 13, 1975 February 6-8, 1975 Paul Winter Consort Billed as The Second Winter Weekend, the stay at PSUC of the Paul Winter Consort brought a fabu- lous opportunity to students to see the inner workings of the group. For three days the Consort provided informal demonstrations, improvisational workshops in which students could join, and sectional instru- mental workshops for strings, winds, percussion, and keyboard and guitar. The weekend culminated with an open rehearsal and concert. The Winter Consort blends the sounds of many diverse instruments and the techniques of many disciplines into an organic whole with an incredibly wide range of expressive possibilities. March 5-7, 1975 169 Clifford Irving Clifford Irving hit the lecture circuit this year in an attempt to raise money to pay for expenses incurr ed during the period of the Hughes Hoax and trial. That PSUC was one of his first speaking engagements showed in the briefness of his half-hour lecture. The man who best deals with the written word found it difficult translating to the spoken. The prison system from which he had just been released was the focal point of dis- cussion. Father Dan Berrigan Robert B. Semple, jr. Father Berrigan appeared in Plattsburgh to speak on News Editor for the New York Times, Mr. Semple behalf of Martin Sostre, then on trial in P ' burgh. He spoke to students on the subject of politics and the focused on the broader question of justice in America news media, as well. 170 John W. Dean III A capacity crowd of 1500 people filled the Memorial Hall gymnasium to hear former White House counsel John Dean. Released from prison only a month and a half before for his part in the Watergate coverup, Dean characterized Richard Nixon as a man more concerned with his historical image than the needs of the American people, always in some way justifying his actions in terms of the actions of past presidents. Of himself he said, I got blinded by my own ambition. I wanted to please my superiors. I knew what they liked and I did my damnedest to please them. Dean ' s short speech was followed by an extensive question-answer session from which the audience captured a small glimpse of the inner workings of the White House of Richard Nixon. NEW THEATRE ASSOCIATION October 16 - 20 8:00 P.M. Devastating Satire Snaps An Avante - Garter! Dorm Life Cafeteria Service Cafeteria service was again one of the biggest gripes on campus. As prices rose, seconds disap- peared and portions diminished, but the lines to wait in grew longer. Semester ends found students frantically cashing in meal tickets on cases of candy bars, potato chips — anything which could be bought and carried off. Second semester saw a trial for unlimited seconds to cut down on waste and create a more friendly dining atmosphere. if 4 tl f« n - — 180 Macdonough Hall I ' 1 1 First Floor Residents Below: Basement Resident Second Floor Residents Below: Third Floor Residents Harrington Second Floor West Below: Second Floor North Mason Hall Third Floor West Below: Third Floor Nnrth Moffitt Hall — Tower C Adirondack Hall — Building 3 193 Miner Center 197 198 Miner Center to Miner Center 199 The Seniors, and Those Without Whose Help . . . During W.W. II, as a young man in his native Poland, Dr. Wojcik was deeply involved in the anti-Nazi under- ground movement lead by his father. In this country, he attended Georgetown and Columbia Universities and taught at Pittsburgh State for the last 6 years. Greatly respected by colleagues and students alike, Dr. Wojcik will certainly be remembered for hb teaching excellence and challengingly high academic standards. But more than that, his personal reminiscences of life and times in wartime Poland opened the minds of his students to a world and age they might not have other- wise understood. Philip Reines, Mass Media President Burke Takes Office Dr. Joseph C. Burke has assumed the Presidency of Plattsburgh State University College after serving for a year as the Vice President for Aca- demic Affairs. He has expended much effort this year to become close to students and faculty alike. Besides moving the President ' s Office from the top floor of the Power Tower to the second floor, he has held regular open meetings with faculty and open discussion sessions with students. We welcome Dr. Burke as the sixth president in the Col- lege ' s 84-year history. 260 Dean Flynt Retires Willard C. Flynt, Vice-President for Student Affairs, ends in June a 20-year career at Plattsburgh State. His kindness, generosity, and honest interest in the students ' welfare will be remembered by thousands of students he has helped through the years. In his early years here he knew each student personally, and understood circumstances sur- rounding most of their problems. In recent times, student body size has kept Dean Flynt from knowing each student on campus, a situa- tion which saddens him. His leaving saddens us. 261 Index to Senior Pictures Adams, Richard 218 Aiden, Wayne 216 Alguire, F. 255 Alguire, Gail Ealon 224 Allen.
