CARDINAL 1970 VOL 54 The Cardinal is an annual publication sponsored by the student body of the State University of New York, College of Arts and Science, Pittsburgh, New York Editors; Hope Benton Kenneth J. Keegan Table Of Contents Greeks 60 Weekends 81 2 213871 STUDENT The Pittsburgh Student comes in many forms. He may appear in his fraternity sweatshirt an ivy league shirt, or love beads and bells. Appearance is often dei eptive, the student who appears to be involved, can be the most apathetic of all. The straight individual may be the most involved. The Pittsburgh student is undergoing a long needed awakening. He is becoming more involved with what is happening on his campus, his country, and his world. The Pittsburgh student comes from the lower, middle, upper, classes. The education he receives is not only a result from class- room learning. He learns an understanding of people and of life ' s processes. The student here is not strongly orientated to his class or alma mater, he has his own individuality and lives it. Despite the differences, Pittsburgh students hold many things in common, their classes, hangouts, and college pressures; one bond that holds the student body together is tin- fact, that they are all Pittsburgh students. i JSKHU prepare!. Hower the Black Onyx shows promise ot being an effective le ure on campus. The establishment of Black Icfen ity has begun I The Apartments in Pittsburgh are either located far from campus or are in less than desirable conditions. In order to free oneself from the dorm living, and the dining hall lines, the student must put up with cleaning, shopping and his own cooking RELAX- ATION Playing football in front of Kent Hall, drinking at the Pub, or sitting by the pond, are means to relax, to get away from the pressure of college study. Relaxation may mean being involved in college politics, dorm life or publications. To others it may mean reading a book, taking a walk or sleeping the day away. Each student finds his own way to relax, and takes time to do it. Two people meet and come together. They wander through classes, parties, quiet moments, which fill the year. They sit by the fountain in the fall, walk down a snowy street in the winter, and in the spring sit in the warm evening. They do many things which are ex- pected of people in love. They share, they grow, and become apart of each other. They understand, and learn about people through their own relationship. After graduation they may be separated or may remain together. In either case, were together here, a freedom that will never be the same. Waiting Half of one ' s life is spent in waiting at Plattsburgh. Registration lines are slow, dinner lines frustrating. A student may wait weeks for a needed book, but they all wait four or more years for graduation. i Study Study is a lonely thing. It is trying to cram 15 weeks of, learning into one night or a 40 page research paper in two days. Some students study regularly, but they are few and far between. Study, or the lack of it, can lead to . . . By this time it ' s become an open secret that there are drugs on this campus. Perhaps the most important fact is that drugs are not confined to just one type of student. Most people commonly believe that only the long haired, unkempt student is involved with drugs; they would be surprised to find some drugs, particularly marijuana are more common among the straighter circles than anywhere else. rder of the Draft Drawing SptcSal to The New York Timet WASHINGTON, Dec. 1— Following is the :h dates were drawn tonight in the draft Sept 14 31 May 24 60 June 21 32 April 1 61 Aug. 29 33 Mar. 17 62 April 21 34 Nov. 2 63 Sept. 20 35 May 7 64 June 27 36 Aug. 24 65 May 10 37 May 11 66 Nov. 12 38 Oct 30 67 July 25 39 Dec. 11 68 Feb. 12 40 Mar. 3 69 June 13 41 Dec. 10 70 Dec. 21 42 July 13 71 Sept 10 43 Dec 9 72 Oct 12 44 Aug. 16 73 June 17 45 Aug. 2 74 April 27 46 Nov. 11 75 May 19 47 Nov. 27 76 Nov. 6 48 Aug. 8 77 Jan. 28 49 Sept 3 78 Dec. 27 50 July 7 79 Oct 31 51 Nov. 7 80 Nov. 9 52 Jan. 23 81 April 4 53 Dec 22 82 Sept 5 54 Aug. 5 83 April 3 55 May 16 84 Dec. 25 56 Dec 5 85 June 7 57 Feb. 23 86 Feb. 1 58 Jan. 19 87 Oct 6 April 24 Dec. 30 Feb. 14 Oct 18 Sept 6 Oct 26 Sept 7 Nov. 22 Dec. 6 Aug. 31 Dec. 7 July 8 April 11 July 12 Dec 29 Jan. 15 Sept 2S Nov. 1 June 4 Aug. 10 June 26 July 24 Oct 5 Feb. 19 [28 Dec 14 87 July 21 !8 June 5 !9 Mar. 2 10 Mar. 31 89 90 91 92 93 94 95 order in which lottery: 88 July 28 Feb. 15 April 18 | Feb. 7 Jan. 26 July 1 j Oct 28 Dec. 24 96 Dec. 16 97 Nov. 8 | 98 July 17 99 Nov. 29 100 Dec. 31 101 Jan. 5 102 Aug. 15 103 May 30 104 June 19 105 Dec. 8 106 Aug. 9 107 Nov. 16 108 March 1 109 June 23 110 June 6 111 Aug. 1 112 May 17 113 Sept 15 114 Aug. 6 115 July 3 The Hippie Mystiqu 59 Jan. 24 c — h ,. a „„ Pa „ n - n Cfrfc— I Uxon and Johnson Confer on World Affairs OLICE ON COAST d on Party Headquarters lesults in 4-Hour Fight- Six Persons Wounded 8y STEVEN V. There are many others which belong to the administration and fa- culty. Some of the faces are hated or scorned or admired or ignored. Self-interest is the key motivator of all the faces. This self-interest is usually generalized to include the interests of the organization to which the face be- longs. The groups tend to stereotype one another because forming images is easier than seeing reality. Thus, the path of least consideration is taken. When the faces intermingle, there is seldom any trust. The wise attempt to under- stand their friends in the context of their friends ' interest ultimately deter- mines where the friend stands be he a student, or faculty member or adminis- tration. 59 AA@ AK$ ® A A $KX aka KB IIAN LTL WEX 61 Alpha Delta Theta Pres.
