EDITOR — Rosemary Infante ASSISTANT EDITOR— Carol Meyer BENJAMIN F. FEINBERG LIBRARY STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE PLATTSBURGH. NEW YORK The CARDINAL is an annual publication sponsored by the student body of the State University of New York, College of Arts and Science, Plattsburgh, New York. Reflections of a year past at Plattsburgh State . . . Life mirrored through pictures . . . In establishing the theme Reflections; an ancient and brief form of poetry has been used throughout the book — Japanese Haiku. It is poetry which in the original Japanese has seventeen syllables in three lines. However, the English translations often do not keep with this pattern. It is hoped that by the use of this Haiku, the mood, the atmosphere and the feelings of Plattsburgh State and its students will be reflected. I Dedication A college is an institution of higher learning, of varying experiences, and of shared happenings . These years are time to begin the self- actualizing process that ena- bles one to distinguish be- tween knowledge and wis- dom. At first glance, a col- lege is a maze of buildings, a miriad of books . . . Closer inspection reveals the students who brave the weather, the torn and dis- rupted campus of which they are the essence. Realiz- ing this, we, the editorial staff of the 1968 CARDI- NAL, dedicate this year ' s book to you, the Students of Plattsburgh State. You, the alumni-to-be, who have made its publication possi- ble and who will, with nos- talgia, look upon its pages for many years to come. 167862 4 The autumn wind is blowing A new semester begins, We are alive, ready to learn. 5 6 The first hope of the year; I kept it a secret, And smiled to myself. t 1 1 The long day closes, Lingering Where there is water. 15 am one Who spends his life Learning and sharing, With each fleeing moment Everything Grows older. ■ HXECUTIVES— C. Not only did the soror- ity celebrate its 75th anniversary, but also be- came officially recognized as a corporation. Starting with Sept., Clio took an avid part in orientation and many social activities on campus. Homecoming, a big event on campus was some- thing special for the Clios. Ties with former members were re-established through the first an- nual Alumni Tea. Three sisters represented the sorority on the Homecoming court and one of them, Edrc Jane Gorius, was crowned Queen of the weekend. The whole s6rority took great pride in their float, A Tribute to Disney. Clio, along with the other Greeks, participated in an all campus Greek Day, capturing first place in two competitions. The sisters of the Clionian Sorority feel a so- cial responsibility to the college and community as well. This was seen in the various community projects they sponsored. They painted the Girl Scout Camp, offered their assistance to the Heart Fund and took an active part in the Hospital Fund Drive. At Christmas, Clio participated in the Pan-Hellenic Community Project by aiding needy families in the area. The social functions of the sorority included many enjoyable weekends with various Greek fra- ternal organizations, including a quite exciting Donkey Ball game, Interfrat Weekend and Par- ents Weekend. The sisters recognized individual student achievement through their presentation of awards at the Inftrfrat Show. Incorporated in Parents Weekend was the May Ball which estab- lished a precedent in honoring graduating seniors. The Senior Breakfast also in May, marked the close of another exciting year for the sisters of Phi Kappa Chi. ALPHA DELTA THETA Row I: N. Strum pf, S. Brown — Sec; B. VanArVcl — Pres.: C. In the fall of 1967 the Alpha Delts held a highly successful, first annual Formal Weekend — AD Goes White Glove . Other extra special weekends AD enjoys are Mother-Daughter Weekend in the spring. Roaring Twenties with the Beta ' s, Homecoming with their float — First Day of School , Winter Weekend, and Intcrfrat Weekend. Pi Alpha Nu and Ago joined forces for their annual Christmas sing around the campus. A good time was had by all. The Sisters have also participated in the local Heart Fund with Lynn Sitkowski as their candidate for the Queen of Hearts. An Ago Alumni Weekend was held in the Spring. The Sisters of Alpha Kappa Phi arc looking forward to next year with the hope that it will be as successful as this one. 55 THETA ALPHA LAMBDA Row I: E. Jones— Trcas.; J. DiLena— Sec: H. Never losing their individuality, the Thalian sisters willingly and happily cooperate with one another toward mutual aims. The 1967-1968 school year has been a most exciting one for the sisters. The year began with a workshop weekend at Twin Valleys. Plans were set up for the year, and with renewed spirit the Thalians scheduled their first alumni breakfast and designed ■ Lifetime ' their first place float for the Homecoming parade. Having successfully begun the semester, anticipation grew as other weekends and projects approached. For the first time, fraternity-sorority weekends were scheduled with each of the four, fraternities and with a fraternity from Paul Smith ' s. The first Beta-Thalian Weekend resulted in the combined efforts of the brothers and sisters with the children from the Childrens ' Home. They enjoyed a picnic lunch and a play day on the lawn behind the Beta House. Community spirit did not end there, however. In cooperation with a community project set-up by Pan-hel, the sisters spent a Saturday morning working with the Christmas bureau to separate and wrap gifts. Later, participation in the heart and cancer fund drives kept the Thalians busy. This year also brought with it plans for the Intcrfrat Show. Parents Weekend and the Senior Banquet. 57 THETA KAPPA BETA Row 1: M. Lantor, G. Jesmain, C. Polihasnikis, D. Defranco, I. Ravin. J. Tromble, W. Ordway. Row 2: E. Armstrong, H. Nahal, G. Lavin, F. The Brothers of Beta represent a vivid cross-section of individuals stemming from all Aspects of campus life. It is their varied contributions which binds the fraternity into a closely knit brotherhood. Together they strive to do their best. Moving into their new home at 62 Broad Street started the academic year for Beta. After getting set- tled, they co-sponsored a, successful Welcome Week- end with AGO sorority; had Paul Revere ride to a second place victory in the Homecoming Parade; had a cook-out in their back-yeard with the Thalians and some friends from the orphanage; played host to an Open House; and enjoyed a costumed Roaring 20 ' s Weekend with AD sorority. While all this was taking place. Beta had a successful football season, collected for the Community Chest, decorated the Children ' s Ward at the hospital at Christmas time, donated blood, and contributed to the March of Dimes. Second semes- ter brought to Beta a weekend with Clio, an Alumni Weekend, and their annual picnic. Just as our spirit, determination, and brotherhood has no end, Theta Kappa Beta ' s service to both the college and community will always continue. DELTA KAPPA DELTA Row I: Dr. Baum, Advisor, M. Delta Kappa Delta Fraternity strives toward the development of fellowship, scholarship and leadership among its members through the social- izing influences of fraternal life. Athletic activities have always been an integral part in the achievement of these goals. As individuals participating in varsity wrestling, soccer, basketball, swim- ming, baseball, and track, the Brothers develop the ability to work as a unit with a common goal. In intramural sports, the Brothers hoped to retire the Intramural Sports Trophy by winning it for the third consecutive year. Athletics, however, do not entirely represent the accomplishments or undertak- ings of the organization. Their weekends with AD, Clio, and Thalians provided opprtunitics for socializing with the sororities. In partnership with Clio, the Broth- ers sponsored a Donkey Basketball game in which many of the faculty partici- pated. This year, there were two goals that overshadowed DK ' s usual activities. To become incorporated and to purchase a house. The Brothers dedicated themselves to this purpose and in late February the goals became a reality. 171 Margaret Street is the symbol of their pride and achievements. Now looking back after our second year we have found that the turmoil of organizing STS has been a dynamic incentive which has led us to create new and exciting activities on campus. Our enthusiasm as a young fraternity has seeped into our social and communial endeavors. Our Homecoming float Daze of Dixieland took third place this year. Soon after that we enter- tained Thalians with a spectacular weekend at Lowcnburg. Sigma Tau sponsors an Ugly Man contest every year and is seeing it become a Plattsburgh tradition. In the past two years the community activities include: Annual Christmas Party at the Childrens Home, Head of the third largest Division of the Clinton County Community Chest, we have also done work for the Plattsburgh JC ' s, March of Dimes, and the Red Cross. In the future Sigma Tau would like to sec the innovation of a stron ger Inter-Fraternity council and the closer association of all the Sigma Tau Chapters in the State University System. 63 PI ALPHA NU In 1953, the fraternity was established as Alphi Phi Omega and this name was later changed to Pi Alpha Nu. The Brothers strive to promote high standards of scholarship, character and fellowship by being a credit to the college, community and themselves. In the spring semester of 1967, the brothers of Pi Alpha Nu won the scholastic cup with an ac- cumulative average of 2.71. However, scholastic achievement docs not totally represent the accomplishments or aims of the Fraternity. In athletics, they try to promote fair play and encourage each brother ' s interests. Activities arc varied, The Homecoming Float was The Beat Gone By . Weekends were en- joyed with the AD ' s. Thalians, Agonians and Clioians. The Brothers participated in various commu- nity service projects such as painting the YMCA and the Salvation Army as part of the annual Thalian Weekend. Pi Alpha Nu is proud to be a part of the Pittsburgh campus and community. INTERFRAT PANHELLENIC COUNCIL FRATERNITY COUNCIL Row I: J. Gagnier. K. Mills. J. Hains. C. St John. A. Nalhanson. Row 2: J. They live and study on the con- fines of the attractive old Miner Institute grounds in Chazy, N.Y.. 1 1 miles from the regular campus, but also partake in campus and town activities. Because of the small size of the group, classes are kept at a minimum size, allowing for a more individualized type of atmosphere where a student is afforded every opportunity to develop his potentialities. To each student is available all of the latest teaching devices plus exposure to many different types of side excursions which add to the regular college experience, therefore, broadening their sources of knowledge for him. They are guided by a few faculty members toward their goals, but it is up to each individual student to use all that is available there and to put all this knowledge into a working arrangement for a better self.
