Text from Pages 1 - 186 of the 1962 volume:

1962 Cardinal Plattsburgh, New York A college year is a time when through timid beginnings and confident returnings, through daily good times and heartaches, through tears and cheers, we question, explore, analyze, answer, abandon and remold. Realizing this enables us to become aware of both its surface and subtle contributions to our lives. We feel, then, that it is fitting to take full advantage of each of these years, to learn from it and to remember it, both for itself and for its in- fluence on what we each become. This book is a glimpse at, and a memory of, a college year. We present it as it happened . . . Class v s ■„ W September 13, 1961 — Residence halls open for freshman at noon and for some five hundred twenty- five enthusiastic, uninitiated and some what apprehen- sive members of the class of 1965, the first of their college yars has begun. Registration, picnics, dances, faculty receptions and the association with upperclass- men gave the freshman their first glimpse of a college year, a glimpse that resulted in organization. Their of- ficers were elected and the class of ' 65 emerged from this beginning as a working unit ready to make their contribution to this college year. of 1965 Ready, all together now . Front Row P. Science Club Radio Club Science Club ' s main functions on campus are to provide students with the opportunity to share their int erests and special talents in science with others and to promote an interest in science outside the classroom. This is accom- plished by sponsoring well known speak- ers and by doing special science pro- jects. The emphasis this year was on stu- dent participation. Membership in- creased considerably, and the club ' s main annual project, organizing the Sci- ence Fair, provided an integrating force for all the club ' s activities. Officially recognized in 1961, the Radio Club is an organization providing instruction in basic electronics and the fundamentals of communications. With the rapid increase in electronic devices for classroom use, Radio Club ' s function is very valuable to the future progressive teacher. The Campus Radio Station, K 2 J S z 2, made its debut this year and serves to provide practical operational experience as well as furthering interna- tional relations through personal short wave contact. The station also cooperates with local communications officials link- ing the campus with Civil Defense Ac- tivities. RADIO CLUB: Dick Poissanl. Pet.- Phillips. Fall Campus Life mm Hey! SEANYS SEANYS provides students who are pre- paring for teaching with the knowledge of facilities that their professional organiza- tions will make available to them when they become teachers. With over 600 members, Seanys is the second largest Seanys chapter in New York State. For two consecutive years, Pittsburgh SEANYS has won national rec- ognition by having two members elected to the Student NEA as first Vice Presidents. On the state level Pittsburgh has had the State Presidency for the past two years. This year, in addition to setting up F.T.A. Chapters in the Area, Pittsburgh cooperated with other Northeastern colleges in an ex- change of ideas and personnel to further plans in professional activities. ACEI Associate Childhood Education Interna- tional began its 1961 -62 college year with a Get Acquainted coffee hour October 4. The year ' s program, which included speakers, panel discussions and two conferences, as well as several community projects served to fulfill the organization ' s purpose. The organization brings into active co-operation all groups concerned with children. Work- shops were planned and carried out to raise the standard of professional preparation, and through a Christmas community project and the picnic for orphan children, A. C.E.I, helped to promote more desirable conditions for children. MXl-First Ron: B. Locke • G-Lahue. W. Blumkin.J. Kellogg. K. Mitchell, M. Siska, P. Finch. Second Row: S. Getman. C. Bier- man. C. M I ' onil The Northern Light The purposes of the bi-weekly campus newspaper, the Northern Light, are well known on campus. It is, of course, a newspaper, and in this capacity serves as an in- former and as a place of exchange of student opinion. The policy of the Light is to print the truth in all matters, and it serves as a factor of motivation in bringing about changes and improvements on our campus. This year the students found a Northern Light with a new look. This involved a change in form at which inc luded the elimina- tion of guide lines and resulted in a neater appearing paper. Et Cetera IRC 1 96 1 -62 was the year that saw a new, pocket-sized literary magazine, still hearing the name Et Cetera. Functioning chiefly for the purpose of publishing a magazine of stu- dent literature, art, and photography. Et Cetera, the campus literary club, centered its activities around this goal. Members attended the State University Collegiate Press Con- ference in Albany this year, and discovered that Et Cetera is one of the few college liter- ary magazines that is totally student run. stu- dent written and student published. The International Relations Club is de- signed to help students gain greater famil- iarity with major areas of tin- world and major problems in contemporary international rela- tions. The club brings in many guest speakers for the benefit of the members and the entire student body. Annually the club takes part in the Eastern States Mid-Atlantic Model Gen- eral Assembly. I.R.C. is a robust, growing club on campus. It has put into action a pro- gram based on Education for World Under- standing through active participation in campus model general assembly programs. Christmas, the time of the college year when life is full of joy, good will, and term papers, is the time when the Music organiza- tions unite to present the annual Christmas programs. It is the sea- son when the best of Christmas music is presented in the best of renditions, the time when Christmas spirit is brought to a climax on campus. 50 College Band All musicians are welcome at any time to participate in the activities of the College Band. The college hand provides opportunities for musical enjoyment and for playing good and worthwhile hand music and transcrip- tions. The hand provides music for varsity games, pep rallies, class day, and baccalaurate. The band and the chorale groups join to present the an- nual Christmas Concert and spring concert. This year witnessed the first band tour. 51 College Communtiy Orchestra The College-Community Orchestra, the only or- chestra between Montreal and Albany, fosters good music for the college and community. This year our college lost Dr. Oace Appleton. Director of the Nurse- Teacher Division. Professionally and personally. Dr. Appleton was highly respeeted and admired by all who knew her. This is perhaps the greatest testimony to the kind of person she was. But all is not com- pletely gone. There is a small part of her in each of her students, a memory of a nurse, an educator, an administrator, and a friend. Robert Northrup It is always with mixed feelings of joy for happy memories and grief that they are but memories that we remember Bob. He was with us just a year, just long enough for us to realize that here was a person of quality. To say, now. that Bob was a good sport, a good student, a good guy, through simple over-use, sounds trite.
