Welcome This year our college begins a new era in its history under the presidency of Dr. George Angell. We sincerely hope, Dr. Angell, that you will enjoy your years at Pittsburgh as much as we are enjoy- ing ours. Within the pages of our CARDINAL, we have tried to capture the spirit of Plattsburgh — our classes, our activities, our many friendships. This treasure chest of memories will serve to re-create the happy years in which we prepared for our careers and will remind us of the memorable day you came to our campus. We, the faculty, students and staff of Plattj- burgh, welcome you, Dr. George Angell, and offer our sincere wishes for a long and happy association with our college — your college.

Successful teaching Is a pinnacle in human achievement. No profession is more demanding of talent, energy, and heart. As a science, teach- ing requires continuous research for new meanings among a vast knowledge of academics and hu- mans. As an art, it challenges the most inventive genius to help create new and lofty visions in young minds and hearts. It is obvious that young people planning to become teachers must have the superior quality of collegiate education so well exemplified at Pittsburgh. The CARDINAL vividly portrays the college life which so broadly and systematically prepares each student for this most challenging of all professions. As the years go by, the CARDINAL will become a treasure chest of memories. It is my personal hope that these memories will inspire you to con- tinue a personal interest in your college.

Dedication As the United States grew, so did its schools, striving to pro- duce citizens capable of living in and working for a true democracy. Within the early one-room schoolhouse the pupils dutifully recited the alphabet and the 3 R ' s; within our schools today the pupils grow emotionally and socially as well as intellectually. Such a change is but another stage in the development from a little red schoolhouse to the large and complex university of which our college is a part. It is this inspiring transformation that should prompot us, as teachers of tomorrow, to attain even higher goals and standards. The little red schoolhouse is now but a fond memory to most of us. From this humble beginning, our educational system has grown to what it is today. To this symbol of education, we, the Junior Class of 1954, dedicate our CARDINAL.
