Cardinal Presented by the Junior Class State University Teachers College Plattsburgh, New York Athletics Administration — Activities Features Successful teaching Is a pinnacle in human achievement. No profession is more demanding of talent, energy, and heart. As a science, teach- ing requires continuous research for new meanings among a vast knowledge of academics and hu- mans. As an art, it challenges the most inventive genius to help create new and lofty visions in young minds and hearts. It is obvious that young people planning to become teachers must have the superior quality of collegiate education so well exemplified at Pittsburgh. The CARDINAL vividly portrays the college life which so broadly and systematically prepares each student for this most challenging of all professions. As the years go by, the CARDINAL will become a treasure chest of memories. It is my personal hope that these memories will inspire you to con- tinue a personal interest in your college. Welcome This year our college begins a new era in its history under the presidency of Dr. George Angell. We sincerely hope, Dr. Angell, that you will enjoy your years at Pittsburgh as much as we are enjoy- ing ours. Within the pages of our CARDINAL, we have tried to capture the spirit of Plattsburgh — our classes, our activities, our many friendships. This treasure chest of memories will serve to re-create the happy years in which we prepared for our careers and will remind us of the memorable day you came to our campus. We, the faculty, students and staff of Plattj- burgh, welcome you, Dr. George Angell, and offer our sincere wishes for a long and happy association with our college — your college. Dedication As the United States grew, so did its schools, striving to pro- duce citizens capable of living in and working for a true democracy. Within the early one-room schoolhouse the pupils dutifully recited the alphabet and the 3 R ' s; within our schools today the pupils grow emotionally and socially as well as intellectually. Such a change is but another stage in the development from a little red schoolhouse to the large and complex university of which our college is a part. It is this inspiring transformation that should prompot us, as teachers of tomorrow, to attain even higher goals and standards. The little red schoolhouse is now but a fond memory to most of us. From this humble beginning, our educational system has grown to what it is today. To this symbol of education, we, the Junior Class of 1954, dedicate our CARDINAL. Though our numbers fell somewhat, our spirit and enthu- siasm steadily increased, as we added innovations and contributions to our alma mater. Our three years have been highlighted by the origin of our — Albany Newsletter, Sophomore Sounding Board, class caroling, Sophomore Soiree Weekend, and the addition of a nurse-teacher to our Junior Court. An outstanding Junior Week climaxed a hearty participation in all traditional college activities. Our gains have equaled our contributions, and we believe that our big little class will leave a lasting impression on Pittsburgh State Teachers College. Mr. Philip C. Walker, Class Advisor. Zenia graduated from Centre Annexe a I ' Ecole Normale Nationale d ' Apprentissage in Paris. In September she will resume her teaching in France. This year Zenia has been active in the Home Economics, Footlights, Internal Relations, and Glee Clubs. She was also Junior delegate to the Foster Child Committee. Massa graduated from Kyoyitsu University in Tokyo. She particularly likes the friendly spirit in Plattsburgh and hopes to spend another year studying at this College. Aside from writing ar- ticles for a Tokyo magazine and newspaper, she has participated in the Home Economics and International Relations Clubs. We have gained much from their acquaintance, and it is our sincere wish that they have also received enriching experiences and retained many lasting memories. ADVISER Mr. Raymond James Seniors In their last college year, filled with final classes and the all-important practicum, the senior ' s class activities, held at the year ' s end, included their picnic and class day program, the Senior Banquet and their dance of the year, the Senior Ball. On June 13th, our graduates marched down the aisle to Pomp and Circumstance , proud of their well earned diplomas, regretfully ending the most memorable years of their life. Page 48 A. Casey M. Sophomores ADVISER Dr. Carl Engelhart Class of ' 56 The Members of the Class of 1956 have proven themselves to be outstanding workers and leaders at P.S.T.C. They began their college career with Freshmen hazing, a necessary evil, taken in good spirit. Their class dances and the Freshmen-Sopho- more Picnic are but a few examples of their many successes. At the halfway mark of their college career, the sophomores can look back happily to past accomplishments and ahead to a bright future. Freshmen Class of 57 ADVISER Dr. Allan Everest Though the Freshman Class is just beginning its four years at College, it has already achieved a lasting place in the social and scholastic fields of student life. Initiation by the Sophomores began an eventful year during which the Freshman Class got into the swing of things with its annual dance and made new friendships at their Freshman- Sophomore Picnic. The Freshman year was climaxed when, on class day, after singing their class song, they doffed their beanies, thus symbolizing the year ' s achievement. It is sincerely hoped that the class will achieve, in the fields of education, that which its past ac- complishments have promised. Pjge 59 Front Row, left to right: Homo. Coach and Managers Left to Right: Harvey Garrow, Coach Alfred Light, Bruce Waller. The Little Cardinals have been maintaining the tradition of top flight basketball which the school has always witnessed. Off to a good start and with continued success throughout the season they have upheld the records established by past J.V. teams. The enthusiasm shown by both students and cheerleaders was comparable only to the team ' s fine spirit throughout the entire season. Excellent playing, good sportsmanship, combined with a fighting spirit, true of any P.S.T.C. athletic team, made up a successful season for the Junior Varsity. We point with pride to these men who kept pace with the high standards and good spirit set up as a criteria at this college. Page 94 The Soccer Team under the leadership of its new coach, Mr. Joe , played well throughout the season, gaining many new fans for P.S.T.C. Many new faces appeared on the field this year, and although their record stands at 2 wins and 5 losses, all games were closely contested. The future of the Redbirds shows promise of many successes on the playing field. Although much of the backfield strength will be lost via graduation, the entire front line, the highest scor- ing in P.S.T.C. ' s history, will remain intact for the next two years. Staff Adviser. CARDINAL STAFF We, the members of the CARDINAL staff, feel that our work on the CARDINAL has been one of our most enjoyable and enriching experiences. Granted this responsibility and honor by our class- mates, each staff member has strived to produce a book symbolic of life at P.S.T.C. The selection of a significant and appropriate theme for the ' 54 CARDINAL was our initial task. Then began the long hours of research, photog- raphy, composing, editing and proof-reading under the able guidance and direction of our adviser, Dr. Everest. We are proud to be the first CARDINAL to feature our new President Dr. Angell and to introduce the male members of the Junior Court. With the completion of this book, it is our sincere hope that you, the reader, will derive as much pleasure and enjoyment from refreshing and recalling all the memorable events of this past college year as we have. Page 106 As the evening shades are falling We look forward to the future with hope, faith, and confidence that our Little Red Schoolhouse will serve as an inspiration for our future growth in education.
