Presented by the Junior Class State University Teachers College Plattsburgk, New York TABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICATION We, the class of 1954, dedicate this yearbook to you, the students of the State University at Plattsburgh, who through the years have contributed so much to its ideals and its development. Each of you as an individual has been able to fulfill many of the aims of this college, through association with professional clubs, class offices, extra- curricular activities and other important school functions. Even with your personal successes, however, you felt the need of working together to accomplish the goals you wished to attain. As you co operated with each other, these desired objectives were finally realized and could be more fully appreciated. Since it is to the students of our college that this yearbook is being dedicated, we find it fitting that our Cardinal should guide your hand through its pages. Let him serve as a constant reminder of your accomplishments. It is our hope that he will remain with you in the future as he has done throughout your college career — welcoming you as Freshmen and bidding farewell to you when you leave as your college days end. This is your story — for you, by you, and about you! The history that is known and best loved resides in the hearts and minds of those who live it. Each year the CARDINAL vividly captures the most meaningful record of that part of under- graduate life which in a large degree is outside the classroom. Yet for years on end, you will return again and again to it in warm introspection about the happiest years of your life. Each page captures a precious memory, an intimate association; in short, a portion of your undergraduate life. In this sense the CARDINAL becomes an indis- pensable document without which the historical account of this college would be grossly and drably incomplete. Just as im- portant is the function it serves in helping to warmly and loyally wed you to your Alma Mater. Edward E. Redcay ADMINISTRATION Deans Dr. John W. McTernan, Dean of Students; Miss Alice K. [13] JUNIORS As wc approach the end of our Junior year, wc look back and realize how short the time has been since we first entered this university as Freshmen. Even less time remains before wc leave to take our place in the world. Yet the memories of our years here at Pittsburgh will al- ways be with us. As the proverbial frosh, we faced the ordeals of Freshman hazing, but wc were soon oriented and organized as a class. We came into our own as Sophomores when it was then our privilege to initiate the Freshmen into the many phases of college life and to entertain them at the Sophomore-Freshman party. We then turned our thoughts toward the Sopho- more Soiree, which proved to be one of our most successful social affairs. Our second term was climaxed by the enjoyable Sophomore-Freshman picnic. The expecta- tions of our Sophomore year were realized and surpassed, offering impetus to our desire to become Juniors. Mr. W. Raymond James, Class Advisor. LEFT TO RIGHT: Clarence Yando. President; Marjorie Haskell. Recording Secretary: Donald Lewis. Vice-President; Juanita Lazorc, Treasurer. NOT PICTURED: Georgia Stack- house, Corresponding Secretary. With the arrival of our Junior year, the realization of the responsi- bilities that have been and will be placed upon us could be seen with more clarity. These semesters were filled with duties, both academic and social. Success accompanied our classmates when they were elected to various school offices as it also accompanied us through our Junior week, which was high- lighted by our coronation, variety show and prom. Now we arc looking forward to our Senior year, not because it will mark the close of our college life, but because wc feel that it will enrich our friendships and provide that final step in our development as leaders. Our message to you, the graduates of 1953, is brief, though sincere. We believe you can be proud of the record in the following pages, for it summarizes your life at P. S. T, C. and serves as a tribute to your many accomplishments. 1953 SENIORS . Your college career has been particularly successful because you have learned to work together effectively. In so doing, you have acquired the qualities of leadership and dependability so necessary to your chosen profession. Now you must leave, but in leaving you take with you the ■memories and the record of your years at Pittsburgh. We hope you will also take your ideals and your ambitions. To the students of future classes, you leave the challenge of making their years here as happy and constructive as yours have been. With the completion of your senior year, you face the turning point in your life — your graduation. Many of you will continue your pursuit of education, while others will begin your teaching career. Whatever path you choose, we know that your growth as individuals will continue. It is with this thought in mind that we bid you [52] farewell. C. Ach H. Agncw N. Ahrcns A. Anull G. Aminerm.in J. Corresponding Secretary; Kathleen Haley, Recording Secretary; Sylvia Millman, Historian; Nancy Arnold, Treasurer. You have now reached the half-way mark of your four years at Plattsburgh State. Within the past two years, you have established a record that would be credit- able to any class. At the beginning of your Freshman year, you were initiated into college life throughout hazing week, one of the important student traditions of our col- lege. After many weeks of becoming accustomed to life at P. S. T. C, you came to be an integral part of the student body and began to make your own contribu- tions as a class. The first of these was your dance, The Freshmen Frolics, which showed your ability to sponsor and present successful social affairs. Your Sophomore year has shown to an even greater degree your leadership and [60] enthusiasm. For the first time in the his- tory of the college, you presented a Sophomore banquet, which preceded your gala Sophomore Soiree. Your original and novel theme of Evening in Paris im- pressed the student body as did the clever- ness with which you carried it out. Two other commendable features were insti- tuted by your class. The first was the Newsletter, which you felt would keep you in closer contact with the nurses in Albany. Then at Christmas time you showed your class spirit by caroling in the community. Your remaining two years will undoubt- edly be as outstanding as these first have been. To you, the class of 1955, we offer our encouragement and hopes for future success. Ready for a dousing? Time out for study. [61] FRESHMEN FRONT ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: David Grotz, Vice-President: Charlene Swears, Sec- retary: Carol Williams, Treasurer; Roy Davis, President. You, the future graduates of 1956, have the opportunity to become another outstanding class of Plattsburgh State. Through freshmen hazing and court, you proved your spirit of sportsman- ship and the desire to be part of us. The Sopho- more-Freshmen picnic enabled you to become more familiar with the rest of your classmates and upper classmen. As you progress through your college years, our symbol, the Cardinal, will become more familiar and endeared to you. Even now, you are function- ing as an organized class and are making your fellow students aware of your interests and ambi- tions. The upper classmen, moving nearer their teaching goals, look to you with some feeling of envy, for you have three more years of college life at Plattsburgh. It is our hope that you will continue to make your coming years as successful as this one has been, and that you will accomplish as much as you possibly can. Then you will be able to look back proudly to your college days with pleasant memories and no regrets. [62] [63] HOUSE OF DELEGATES FRONT ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Wallace, Henderson, Weber. House of Delegates Applying the principle of Democracy in Ac- tion to ' everyday life, the House of Delegates rules as the student-governing body of our college. Delegates from every student organization on campus assemble at the bi-monthly meetings, and with the guidance of Deans Lewis and McTernan, formulate the college policies adhering always to administration approval. The House has done much to bolster the standards of Plattsburgh State and its students. The responsibilities of the delegates consist of establishing new student organisations, allocating students funds, electing and sending students to various conferences, exchanging ideas with other colleges, and forming committees which look into pertinent matters of general interest. Student Council This council meets regularly, prior to the meetings of the House of Delegates. It serves as a planning committee to make up the agenda for each meeting of this governing body. Members of the council include the officers of the House and representatives from each of the standing committees. LEFT TO RIGHT: Art Rouse, Don Lewis, Pat Major. Annamaric Grasbcrgcr, Joan Kingslcy, Barbara Story, Marian Paterson, Frank Dale. [66] 35r The members of this committee are chosen by the House of Dele- gates. The activities planned by the committee this year included a mixer dance, movie nights, social dances, and a special game night for all those who wished to com- pete in so varied a program. The objective of this group is to keep our weekends socially well-filled. Student Social Committee LEFT TO RIGHT: Marion Patcrson, Marilyn Oilman, Imogcnc Main. The assemblies at P. S. T. C. are part of the educational pat- tern of the college and offer the students the opportunity of hear- ing and meeting well known speakers and artists. This committee, appointed by the House of Delegates, is as- sisted by faculty members in selecting programs for both day and night presentations. For the guests, the group also plans in- formal luncheons and entertain- ment, which provide an excellent opportunity for direct social con- tact between students and visiting celebrities. LEFT TO RIGHT: Joe Duell, Gen Tayor, Joan Kingsley, Carol Garfunkcl, Norma Wrcdc. Student Guidance Committee The members of the Student Guidance Committee are respon- sible for a great many of the improvements on the campus. They investigate and act on stu- dent suggestions which result in the introduction of new, or ad- justment of, existing college facil- ities. It is this commitec which helps solve many of our campus problems. Assembl Committee LEFT TO RIGHT: Seward Neill, Gail Gorman, Frank Dale. Extra Class Activities FRONT ROW. Interclass Council This committee works to promote unity and cooperation among the classes. Once a month they meet to discuss problems or suggestions from students. Plans and recommendations are made which help to maintain college standards. The committee consists of Dean Lewis, class advisors, class presidents, and one other delegate from each class. The Extra-Class Activities Com mittee is composed of a student- faculty group responsible for plan- ning and evaluating the entire extra-class program. This year the group discussed pi, ins for making a survey of how organizations and individual col- lege students feel about the extra- class program. : FRONT ROW. LEFT TO RIGHT: Eleanor O ' Connor. ELEMENTARY The Elementary Club is the largest student organization in the school. The purpose of this club is to further the professional understanding of the General Elementary student. This is done by bringing in specialists in this field. This year we were fortunate in having Dr. Frederick Moffitt, Acting Associate Commissioner of Education, as our first guest speaker. A movie, Nanook of the North, which proved to be interesting as well as educational, was another presentation. Other important acts of the club were the sending of delegates to the meeting of the New York State Teachers Association in Buffalo, the Early Child- hood meeting in Bennington, and the New York University Symposium in New York City. The Elementary Club also served its mem- bers from a social standpoint by sponsoring dances and various social events during the year. The highlight of these was the Pedagogue Hop, held in May. ECONOMICS CLUB The Home Economics Club presents to all Home Economics students the opportunity for personal development through services to school and community. This club helps to further knowl- edge of the many phases of Home Economics and to increase interest and pride in them. These future homemakers have sponsored the Coffee Hour for Freshmen, the Christmas Tea, and have made a Brownie Troop active once again. They have published news of their activi- ties in the annual Platacon. New friends and ideas were gained from the workshop in Burlington, Vermont, and the state convention in New York City. This year the Home Economics Club and the Radio Workshop presented a joint assembly pro- gram to help the student body gain a better understanding of the meaning of Home Economics. NURSE-TEACHERS CLUB The aims of this organization are to sponsor programs of professional interest to all members and to plan for the recreation and diversion of the group. Many social events such as a Christmas party, a welcoming party for the Freshmen, and and Easter Tea for the entire college, were spon- sored by the club. On May Day, they also gave a party for the Children ' s Home. At Christmas, they sang carols and decorated the hospital, which brought much cheer to the patients. Showing their desire to contribute further to the development of the college, the club sent delegates to both the Buffalo Conference and to the New York Symposium. A Newsletter has been sponsored by the Nurse-Teacher Club to inform students on and off campus and the alumni of the activities of the group. Even though the nurses are in Albany for two ye.irs, they are always in close contact with their classmates in Pittsburgh. In Albany, they continue to carry out many of the functions of the club as they do at P. S. T. C. OFFICERS LEFT TO RIGHT: Bcrnadcttc McKenna. Mary Janet Rodee, Carolyn Wilder. [74] Published bi-weekly, the Northern Light brings news of college activities and discussions of our current problems to students, faculty and alumni, to whom this paper is issued. This small group was composed of regular band members who played at all home basketball games. This ensemble did much to bolster our cheering spirit, as did the entire band at our Pep Rallies. Another division of this music organization is the Brass Ensemble, which appeared at the Vesper Sing. This group was heard in the Winter Concert with the Glee Club, Modern Dance group, Vocal Ensemble, and the Band. Their performance was excellent, producing in all who heard them a feeling of pride. In December, a smaller group of the regular orchestra, the string quartet, was in attendance at the Christmas Vesper Sing and rendered several selections plus providing accom- paniment for the choral groups. Spring came and with it, the presentation of Finian s Rainbow. Everyone agreed that the orchestra ' s performance added greatly to the success of our second annual operetta. The final public appearance for the orchestra during this highly successful year will be the impressive rendition of music for the Baccalaureate Service in June. Tune-up time. Through the use of exhibits, field trips, speakers, and actual photographic experiences, it has shown students and faculty alike the art to be found in photography today. In addition to this, the club also participates in the annual science fair and aids school publications with the fundamentals of photography, mainly developing, printing, and enlarging. It is this group, composed of Home Economic, Elementary, and Nurse Teacher students who work enthusiastically to further their appreciation of art, and to develop crcativencss by working with such materials as leather, metal, block printing, wood, and clay. [89] Inter-Collegiate Association Oswego Exchange CONFERENCE DELEGATES New York State Symposium Once again, as in the past, the Athletic Board was faced with the task of allocating funds to the various athletic functions of the college. The Board, presided over by Doug Mehne, with Doc Wiley as its faculty advisor, was successful in all its un- dertakings and no financial difficulties were left for the incoming group to assume. Besides the regular duties that the Board per- formed, other projects were undertaken and car- ried out during the year. The cheerleaders were in need of new uniforms. Consequently, the Board promptly ordered and paid for complete new out- fits for both Varsity and J. V. cheerleaders. A con- tingency fund was established and maintained. This fund serves more or less as a cushion which the Board can fall back upon in case their funds fail, or whenever bills turn up unexpectedly. Tentative plans were made to send the cheerleaders on at least one of the basketball trips. And last but far from least, the Board was able to operate success- fully throughout the entire year. [93] VARSITY BASKETBALL The 1952-53 edition of Pittsburgh ' s Varsity basket- ball team, although aided by the return of only one player from the previous year ' s starting five, played the toughest sehedule that any Plattsburgh team has ever faced. Coach James ' team made up in speed, deception, and teamwork what it had lost in height and scoring ability. The team started out by playing schools such as R. P. L, Buffalo State, Frcdonia and Brockport, The Cardinal team was beaten and beaten badly, but it recovered, and when they met teams like Oswego, Albany State and Potsdam, they held their own. The team was, without a doubt, the travelingest team ever to wear the red and white. But this held true to Doug Mchnc Jim Scars Ken Humiston Conch Jnmes with managers Jim Dugan and Bob Sharpe Mr. James philosophy that he would rather have his squad play a good team and be defeated than to win games easily over poor opposition. Next year ' s team should be even better as the boys have gained experience and confidence. However, the Varsity will lose three good men via the graduation route — Chuck Keedle, Jack Noone, and Ken Humiston. 13 Jack Oircy Gil Burncll John Humiston Will he make it?? SECOND ROW: Mr. Werner, Ace Watkins, Don LaBombard, Jim McAllister, Dale Thornton, Art Rouse, Gil Duken, Clarence Yando. A new and different pattern of play was in- troduced at P. S. T. C. this year by Coach Al Wer- ner and his Little Redbirds. The coach was new, the system was new, but the outcome of the games was the same as always — Plattsburgh was usually ahead when the final whistle blew. Mr. Werner did not cut his squad down as do most coaches. Instead he used his third and fourth string teams during the entire first half as shock troops. These teams, although usually weak in scoring, literally ran the opposition ragged. Then came the mainstays, sparked by Bob Garrow, to dazzle the opposing teams with their outstanding scoring ability. The J. V. ' s show a great deal of promise and should, in the future, keep the Varsity well sup- plied with good basketball talent. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL Swisssssh ' Coach A. Werner and manager, H. CARDINAL STAFF The work of the CARDINAL staff is per- haps more concentrated than that of any other or- ganization in the school. It is an organization that changes in its makeup yearly for it consists only of Juniors, elected by the executive committee of the class to publish our school annual, THE CARDINAL. The CARDINAL staff is elected in the Spring of the class ' Sophomore year, and consists usually of ten students who do the actual planning and make-up of the yearbook. It has been traditional at P. S. T. C. for the theme and dedication of the book to remain un- known to the rest of the students in the school. The secret is kept until Class Day, when the book is presented to the college at the Class Day exercises. The ' 53 CARDINAL staff is fortunate in pre- senting the largest book ever published here at Pittsburgh. The need to expand comes with the ever-increasing enrollment of the college, plus the large number of activities in which the students participate. Along with the staff members, students and faculty alike have contributed to this publication. Many thanks go to those who have donated much of their time to our year book. With the assistance of our advisor, Dr. Everest, and the never-failing patience of our class, the task is completed. To the staff, the Cardinal has become a sym- bol too. In his progress through the book, he ' s been a friend against our many problems — with us he ' s cheered each time a deadline is met and another task accomplished. It is with a mixture of pride and humility in the honor you gave us that we present this book to you. As representatives of the Class of ' 54, we ask you to look back in the years to come and con- sider this record of accomplishments among your richest experiences.
