tomattour jdhei in Today THE CARDINAL 1947 BENJAMIN F. FEINBERG LIBRARY STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE PLATTSBURGH, NEW YORK THE JUNIOR CLASS SALLY 0. DUIGNAN Editor EDWARD J. DWYER Business Manager DEDICATION The Junior Class of 1947 wishes to dedicate the CARDINAL to the idea of progress through education. We have chosen as our motto Tomorrow Lives in Today. We feel that our motto applies not only to us as stu- dents but to all men, living today, dreaming of tomorrow, and shaping that tomorrow from the raw material of the present. We can help to mold the new world, for our task is to guide and inspire children. Our college courses have given us the means to do our work well, and for that we are sincerely grateful. It remains for us to give substance to the dream of tomorrow. 65154 ALMA MATER As the evening shades are falling, And the day fades into night; Pause a moment in the gloaming To salute the Red and White. Flag of red, our badge of courage, With your gleaming letters white; Emblem of our Alma Mater Guide us onward toward the right. Though our ways may part forever, In our hearts there shall be bright All the golden memories gathered ' Neath the Banner Red and White. TENTS ADMINISTRATION CLASSES GOVERNMENT ACTIVITIES CLUBS ATHLETICS OUR PRESIDENT Each year our college enriches its tradition and plans anew for the years that lie ahead. The 1947 C A R D I N A L records this grow- ing tradition and visualizes for all of us the ever-expanding future of our college. For stu- dents and faculty these pages mirror the ever- flowing current of our college life. The memories which our yearbook so viv- idly recall will be ever more alive as we turn these pages again and again. From the memory of yesterday and today comes the plan for the greater future which our college will achieve. Thus the future becomes a part of the present. The annals 01 our yearbook commemorate most aptly our life together. The blending of past, present, and future dramatizes for all of us the wealth which comes from our com- mon association. In this, my greeting to you, it is a privilege to read of your happy yesterday, to know of your understanding of our college today, and to envision with you our shared hope of what the college may be- come. CHARLES C. WARD βΊ 9 3n JWemortam Dr. Walter L. Taylor No words can express our grief at the loss of our dearly loved adviser, Dr. Walter L. Taylor. More than an adviser, he was indeed our friend, guide, teacher and counselor. As director of the Laboratory School, he had more than enough to occupy his hours; yet he always made time for us, his Jun- iors. His kind understanding and warmth was radiated to all who sought his help. Doctor Taylor was a man who was loved and respected not only by the Junior Class, which he so ably advised, but by the entire student body and all those who knew him. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten. THE JUNIOR CLASS DEAN OF WOMEN Dr. Edward E. Redcay StjiJinn β Mns Pttriett Rimnry, M n Kdtiind Tattle, Mm Mi r W ' dlJrmi, Dr. .,. ReJeay. Cβ Can it be possible that we are Juniors ? Our Frosh days gone β but not our determination to make the Class of ' 48 a truly outstanding one. As Frosh we boasted a mem- bership of 212 β including our Cadet Nurses β the largest in the history of the College. Re- member the first registration day β those weeks of initiation (we all survived, thank you), apple-picking, then those mid- years β cramming β the first re- port cards (remember that day!) We had as our class president Naomi Venable. 1 6 THE JUNIOR CLASS The Sophomore year found us back in the groove β vowing to work harder. We had lost our Cadet nurses who went to Wa- tertown, Ogdensburg, and New York. Naomi Venable again led us capably through our Sophomore year. Jun tor The memory of our Junior Week β that super banquet lin- gers with us still as we round the final curve in our Junior year. β’ We are now truly upper- classmen, looking forward to the final year in our Alma Mater. βΊ 1 7 ANN N. Do we really have to know all those rules, and what happens when we go to court? What beautiful weather for pulling up dandelions, and we can write home and tell Mom and Dad that we are digging hard! The days which passed so slowly at first began to glide by faster and faster with a Hallowe ' en party, Thanksgiving vacation, and Christmas festivities marking the traditional red-letter days. And soon the first term was over, and it was time to initiate a new class of Freshmen. It was also time for report cards β those little pieces of cardboard so packed with meaning. After that blow, nothing worse could happen. And so, having passed the first hurdle, the not-so-green Freshmen are looking ahead expectantly to the rest of their college life. βΊ 59 CLASS OF 1950 ELEMENTARY Robert Allen Ruih Baislcy Frances Bechard Edna Bennett Grace Bcnware Clayton Blanchard James Brannigan Robert Butler Joan Cain Alice Campbell Ellison Carter Paul Daby Vivial Dankbcrg Thomson Douglas Edna Elvidgc Mary Funck Theresa Gagnon Paul Gordon Ruth Hamilton Catherine Harkins Theresa Hart Ethel Hillman Marcia Hungcrford Robert Hyatt Richard Jennett Arnold Jubert Robert Kanaly Joan Knapp Helen Labare Grace LaPlante Joseph Lavorando Hope Leeger Gcraldinc Ling Margot Lorch Virginia MacPcek Bcrnice McKeown Ralph Macey Kenneth Malpass Dave Marquis Richard Mischler Patrick Murphy Daniel Olcott Mary Lou Osborne Roy Otis Anna Panor Ann Parrotte Robert Pa mode Robert Purdy Patricia Rolich Marjorie Royal Jeanne Saltans Murray Schneider Alna Sherman Eva Slattery Ruth Smith Marcia Sprague Robert Squier Jane Stafford Floyd Stark Elizabeth Stein Helen Sulettc Annette Torrence Clement Tourvillc Olga Trach Janet Truran Constance Waechtcr Clifton Watson Thomas Werner Lyman Young HOME ECONOMICS Rosemary Arnold Patricia Anthony Joyce Bartholet Anne Bethel Winifred Bierce Jean Bragg Sylvia Bregg Ann Brown Edith Brown Theresa Brunelle Wilma Bulivant Bette Burncll Jean Cahn Marjorie Chadwick 60 - Alma Cleveland Shirley Cohen I H i Collins Katherinc Corrigan Jane Corser Anne Harrow Jeanne Davidson Patricia DePew Dorothy DeWitt Katherine Dunn Alice- Arden Duquette Patricia Fitzpatrick Anne Flanagan Beatrice Freed Aileen French Sara Gernon Marion Goewey lean I laefele Gretchcn Harter Barbara Hawes Antoinette FlilUon Shirley Howard Alice Jacobson Fmma Jones Frances Kornguth Lorraine Latray Arlene Lefkowitz Jeanninc LeRoy Helen Locke Jean McGardle Wanda Mcintosh Betty Marschner Mary Louise Martin Kathrvn Mellon Marilyn B. S. T. C. came back with a hard-fighting, though not numerous, squad. Although the team of 1946-47 cannot be considered a great one, it won fame and glory playing as an underdog throughout the season while meeting large squads from various parts of New York. Massachusetts, Vermont, and Canada. Volleyball has aided in expanding the athletic program this year. Selecting men from intramural teams, an all-star team was formed and it played a number of local teams, such as those representing Champlain College and the Y. M. C. A. Business Men ' s Group. The results were outstanding, for the all-star team won more than its share of the engagements. - 97 WOMEN ' S BASKETBALL I I ! For this game, nineteen outstanding players from the teams which compete during the season are chosen to participate. This year ' s White team topped the Cardinals by a score of 33 to 30. As the girls, in their new red and white uniforms, passed, dribbled and shot, the spectators followed their respective cheerleaders with many yells and screams. 9 8 - CHEERLEADERS loyee lulled. WOMEN ' S VOLLEYBALL Pass it up! β Spike it! β Familiar words to all who have ever played volleyball. After a highly competitive interclass season in which the Juniors were the victors, two honor teams β the Red and the White β were chosen. Doris Brown ' s Red team won two games out of three by a score of 16 to 14, 15 to 3 from the White team captained by Jane Paterson. βΊ 99 EDITOR ' S NOTE A mere thank you is not sufficient to show my appreciation to this year ' s CARDINAL Staff for the grand work that they have done.
