The Senior Class of State University College at Oswego proudly dedicates the 1965 ONTARIAN to Professor Francis P. Hulme. lt does so as a small token of the devotion and high esteem which it has for this fine educator, a man who shares with his students his exceptionally varied background. He is a man who has filled countless hours for more than a decade with congenial and robust humor. He is a true Southern gentleman. He is a man who will be sincerely remembered for his honest frankness, his high scholastic standards, and his enthusiastic zest for life by all who have been privileged to meet him.

FOREWURD The nature of art in our society has been carefully studied as the 1965 Ontarian staff chose its theme: the arts on Oswego's campus. An increase in emphasis on the sciences and the Sputnik era has been largely responsible for neglect of the human and the fine arts in our society. However, more recently society has found a renewed interest in the aesthetic and the creative. The spiritual and the cultural counterparts have allied with the material to strengthen the scriptures, lVlan shall not live by bread alone. What do the arts contribute to the life of the college student? Literature may offer guidance to living and help develop a personal philosophy. Music offers an expression of rhythmic movement: architecture appeals to the senses, and paintings arouse emotion. But art is not limited to a finished product, it is inherent in the process itself. Our staff interprets art in its very broadest sense in order to in- corporate the various groups, such as, fine and useful, major and minor, visual and auditory, combined arts, theater arts, industrial arts, and handicrafts. 3
