I am in complete accord with the appropriateness of the theme of the 1965 Ontarian - The Arts on the Campus. Artistry in what we see and what we hear contributes in no small degree to the effectiveness of a college atmosphere. Because we believe this, no effort is being spared to make our campus environment one which contributes to wholesome and gracious living, to concentrated work, and to healthy social and recreational activities. In a larger measure, the arts on a campus extend far beyond what we see and what we hear. From the viewpoint of the faculty, a most artistic experience is to sense the subtle symp- toms of maturing students and to sense that students are de- veloping artistry in how they feel, how they think, how they work, and how they play. We trust that your four years at Oswego have done much to develop this kind of artistry. Our very best wishes to you in your future endeavors. 21

The attempt to capture beauty and to harness man's creative imagination as revealed in his art, broadly interpreted, is an endeavor which is reminiscent of the honorable past and too frequently absent in today's technically oriented culture.
