VARSITY BASKETBALL The ability to rise to the occasion and win the key games enabled the Oswego State basketball team to make history in the 1964-1965 season by becoming the first team to win the State University Conference title in two successive years. lt was a long uphill fight to the top spot, and it took clutch performances and a big helping hand from Potsdam, but the Lakers finally reached first place in the next-to-the-last week of the season when they moved into a tie with Plattsburgh. The team then gained sole possession of the top rung when Potsdam upset the Plattsburgh Cardinals in their final league game, and the Lakers went on to win the crown outright by handing Oneonta a 77-60 defeat in the sea- son's finale. 175 The team concluded the season with a remarkable rec- ord of eight wins and one loss in conference competi- tion and a fourteen win and seven loss overall record. Rich Kohler and Cas Kowalski led the team in scoring with averages of 15.1 and 13 point averages per game, and Rich Kohler and Bernie Fuller accumulated the most rebounds. For the first time in recent years there was no post- season conference tournament, although league officials are currently working to gain an automatic NCAA col- lege division berth for the conference championship. It is hoped that this automatic bid will become a reality in the very near future.
