J U DO CLU B The Judo Club, which is now a member of the ASB, was originally founded in 1962 as a private club and the organ- ization is now in its third year under the leadershi-p of Instructor Jerold Bechard, holder of a black belt. The club is designed to give the individual student some acquain- tance with the art of Judo and Jujitsu as a sport, as well as a means of defense. This year, as in the past, the club started with a huge in- itial membership of sixty-five men and forty-five women. Although most of these initial enthusiasts have lost inter- est, over three-hundred students have received some train- ing in the club since its start, and a select few have gone on to win memorable distinctions in the art of Jujitsu. ln one recent tournament against Canada, five members of the Oswego-Club. received the rare distinction of Hbatseig- un or on-the-spot promotion as a result of outstanding competitive performance. The club takes part in many tournaments in the United States and other countries. In the first year of competition, 1963-1964, the club lost only two of fifteen tournaments and they placed third in the Eastern Collegiate Champi- onships. This year the team is undefeated in United States competition and has lost only one match, a decision to the Kingston team from Canada. 168

FIRST ROW: H. Schwartz, S. Ort, C. Drake. SECOND ROW: Coach George Crowe, T. Hay, H. Edelst- ein, I. Rosen, R. Gibbs. TENNIS The 1964 tennis team accumulated a five-win-four- loss record and also battled its way to a respectable fourth place in the New York State College tourna- ment. Ron Gibbs maintained the best individual record, his being a record of eight wins and one loss for the season's dual meet competition. These fine records definitely put Oswego back on the winning track in the tennis world as the Laker team improves every year. The return of several veterans and seven sopho- mores, who weren't allowed to play varsity last year be- cause they were freshman, should provide tremendous inter-squad competition. The 1965 tennis team prom- ises to be the best ever. .4 - T4 .. ..4....
