The group consists of an execu- tive committee, five elected members from each class, and representatives from each organization it recognizes. The Board has power to issue student loans, scholarships and to grant an allocation to each group represented. Upon special request, an organization may receive an addition to their alloca- tion with the permission of the Board. In order to keep the student body organized and informed, the Student League regulates the use of all bulletin boards in Old Main. This year the Board has adopted a new constitution. Henceforth the Board will be known as the Student Senate. It is hoped that the new constitution will increase the efficiency and democracy of our student government. 1 4 i l 74 it 1-M., The Constitution Committee discusses its improvements for the outdated Constitution before the Student League Board. Their members spend many hours a week in rehearsals and appear for civic organi- zations as Well as college concerts. This year the Womenls Glee Club, directed by Mr. Burnsworth, Went on a week's trip through Long Island. It was their Hrst tour and proved rewarding for the girls and their audiences. The Collegians and their director, Miss Hubbard, toured the Niagara Falls area. Their small group enjoys singing all kinds of music, particularly the light classical. The' Orchestra, conducted by Mr. Worley, consists of students and local citizens. Their concerts which often include music arranged by Mr. Worley, are held in Alumni Hall and are open to the community. Our co-ed group, the College Choir, made several noteworthy appearances. Its contributions at the Christmas Concert, the Homecoming Musicale, and the Easter Concert proved commendable. C ' ROW 1: W. Kress, R. T. Moore W Burger A Niles A LaCourse Miss Hubbard ROW 2 O R. The staff of the Times is headed by the Editor-in-Chief, Norma Carr. Mr. George Engel- man, the advisor to the Times, the student report- ers and the circulation staff work smoothly and cooperatively with the editors. Theiris is a com- plicated process which results in the publishing, once a week, of the Szate Times for the awaiting student-faculty body. H IH I ll 'i llhl Vllll '-I 'IH new fm I L it will The purposes of this organization are to produce the plays which are chosen by a committee of college per- sonnel together with the club, to develop in its members a degree of competence in the dramatic arts, and to bring honor and distinction to the college. Requirements for membership are interest and par- ticipation. Mask and Hammer has devised a new credit system for evaluating a student's participation. Thirty points are necessary before an application for admission is considered. These points must be accumu- lated in at least two different productions. Each area of participation has a minimum and maximum number of points to be given, and the club as a whole evaluates the student's performance of his task and makes a decision as to how many credits to award. Among the notable accomplishments this year is the revision of their constitution. Two new sections were added. and parts were rewritten for sake of clarification and efhciency. N. Woolford, B. Each organization plans its own activities and functions except on weekends sponsored by the I.F.C. This group keeps a careful eye on all of the activities and handles matters which are controversial or which require a joint decision. The Greeks give Frosh a welcome introduction to college social life with parties and informal get-togethers. They add a flare of excitement to the first semester when they enter into competition in Homecoming's float parade. Much hard work goes into the Hmasterpiecesf' The fun angle is not forgotten, however. Alumni are welcomed with a jazz concert and a semi-formal dance. At the next two big weekends, White Rose Ball and Valentine Ball, gowns and cocktail dresses add a touch of Hollywood to Oneontais snow and ice. Rushing is another large item on any Greek's list. This major activity gets off to a big start with open houses, followed by a fast flurry of coffee hours and parties. The underclassmen get caught up in a whirl of excitement as they dress for formal banquets and other special occasions. They fill up on refreshments and meet a vari- ety of new people. Rushing culminates on the eventful day when bids are given out and everyone decides it was worth the hurry and worry. With the addition of new pledges, the Greeks plunge into All Greek Sing with high spirits. This is a competitive event and the winner is given a highly prized plaque. Sprinkled between all of these activities the Greeks find time to participate in such community projects as the Heart Fund Campaign and the Community Chest Drive. Special weekends for parents and dates add extra highlights to the busy year. 103 The sisters enjoy themselves anytime, anywhere. This time it's around the piano. Rush parties find J. Gustafson, C. Coach Chase watches intently as the ball arches toward the basket. The 1958-59 edition of Coach Hal Chase's Oneonta State Red Dragons ran up an impressive 17-5 record. Included in this tally are three games which were played in the State University Teachers College Tournament at Oswego. The Red Dragons, seeded fourth, finished in just that position among the eight teams entered. Perhaps the outstanding characteristic of this year's team was its ability to bounce back after losing five players at mid-semester due to academic. deficiencies. At the mid-semester break, the Oneontans sported a 7-3 record, and were being led offen- sively by George Williams and defensively by Leo Hughey. When neither of these boys returned to school, it was widely rumored that Coach Chase might as well cancel the remainder of the schedule and let the boys rest for baseball. All the Red Dragons did then was to go on a nine-game winning streak, which included victories over such worthies as Potsdam, Plattsburgh and Buffalo State. The latter contest was a 75-74 heart-stopper which was played in Buffalo. The Chasemen came from far behind to win in the last few you-know-whats. The aforementioned Tournament saw Oneonta wrap Geneseo in the opener, 80-41. Things were different the next night, however, as the eventual tourney-win- ner, Cortland State, outshot and outran the locals, 75-57. Playing for third place the following night, the Dragons ran into a hot-handed Albany State club and were thumped, 82-66. Returning to the friendly confines of the State Armory, the Red and White closed the season with a convincing 88-54 shellacking of New Paltz State. Leading the club throughout the year were senior co-captains Len Gereau and Cramer Harrington. Lenny, always a steady double-figure scorer, again led the club with a 712, free-throw average, and finished second in total scoring with 248 points. Cramer was the leading scorer with 295 markers and a 15.5 average. Perhaps even more outstanding was his selection on the first All-Tournament Team in the Oswego Invitational. In tourney play he averaged 20 points per game. Although seniors Gereau, Harrington and Dick Vroman will be missed, next season should be another good one for Coach Hal Chase. 122 State Opp. Sir George Williams 109 34 Kings College 90 66 Maritime College 81 51 Harpur College 99 59 Plattsburgh State 1' 80 62 Potsdam State at 66 64 Albany State 65 68 R.I.T. if 69 102 Oswego State 'Y' 64 70 Griilis Air Force Base 77 51 Geneseo State 75 45 Potsdam State 87 70 Plattsburgh State 79 67 New Paltz State it 87 64 Harpur College it 83 58 Buffalo State at 75 73 Roberts Wesleyan if 65 64 New Paltz State 88 54 Tournament at Oswego Geneseo State 80 41 Cortland State 57 75 Albany State 66 82 i'Away games ...ww fig, Basketball enthusiasts cheer the team on ul thc Armory 123 P Cisek, J . Junior Varsity Basketball The Oneonta State Jayvees, under the tutelage of Don McAvoy, ended the season on the right side of the ledger with a 9-7 mark. The Junior Dragons featured no less than eight high scorers through- out the season, as their ranks were shuffled sorne- what by recalls to the varsity roster. Coach McAvoy did an excellent job in mould- ing his somewhat transient squad into a winner, as he directed the Junior Red Dragons to their first winning season in some time. Soccer The 1958 edition of Coach Hurley McLean's Red Dragons compiled the best record in State's four-year soccer history. The Oneonta booters wound up with an impressive 8-1-1 record, featured by eight consecutive games without a loss. Freshmen played outstanding roles for the McLean- men last fall, as Howie Beers and Ron Tullich tallied fourteen of the Club's twenty-nine goals for the entire season. Beers' eight markers set an all-time Oneonta record. ' Stalwart defensemen included Mark Silberbusch, Charlie Schermerhorn and Neil Silvernail. Long John Frazee excelled in the nets throughout the season. The Statesmen were unbeaten on the new soccer Held on the Upper Campus, emerging victorious on ive occasions. With the return of this year's freshmen standouts along with ten upperelass veterans of the soccer wars, Coach McLean is looking forward to another banner season in 1959 Iwi' is . .gf-Wit' 'ww -452, ,.. . . . It was Jack Najarian's second year as captain and his fourth year on the team. A highlight of the season was the win over Potsdam, the first vic- tory over them in four years. One of the most exciting games was at Albany. With the Dragons behind 8-7 in the last of the 9th, Najarian tripled with one man on after two outs, to tie the game. The Dragons went on to win the game 9-8 in the 10th inning. The team played a limited schedule of eight games, being rained out of three games. Getting the season off to a good start, the team beat Griiiiss Air Force Base 14-6. Eustice hit a bases-loaded home run and his nephew, Northrup, hit a home run his first time at bat as a college player. 0 '. . QL, .. N ' Q. '. ' L.
