During the past several decades, our Music Division has become one of the largest and most respected schools in the country for educating teachers of music for the public schools. Guided by a faculty who are not only competent teachers but also practicing musicians, our students acquire the knowledge and skills requisite to their success in their chosen profession. The many recitals by students and concerts by our several choral and instru- mental organizations help the music students to acquire the ability to perform music well, and other recitals by faculty and visiting artists join them in providing an atmosphere in which all of our students and faculty, as well as the entire community, can hear great music of both the past and of our own time. All labor with three main goals in mind: to inform the readers, to present information that is food for thought and stimulates interest, and to make the Leader a newspaper of which the college can be proud. I'1'f.vi1lfu! of Slmffzzf Cmrzirfl The main objective of the Student Government Association this year has been to bring the structure, functioning, and coordination of student activities up to the point where the student body could hope to see the ideals of student government which have been envisaged so well in past years. To accomplish this end, several structural changes were made. A major innovation was the establishment of the Wel- fare Commission set up to handle student interest, in 5. health, food, housing, and parking. The long standing tradition of cooperation and mutual respect between the administration and stu- dents was preserved by S. G. A. through a critical period of misunderstandings about the health situ- ation. This is just one illustration of the important position S. G. A. holds as a democratic link between faculty, students, and administration. . -I. ll li is Q E ri gy 'ID ' , E Left to Right-J. Washer. Secretaryg R. Goettel. President: W. Persia, Treasurerg J. The Camp Commission, chartered under the Student Government Association, has full responsiblity for the maintenance, improvement, and use of the camp site. All-college assemblies and lectures, planned and presented by the Assembly Commission, serve a two-fold purpose: to supplement regular college instruction and to stimulate the cultural and intellectual life of our college. The programs have included such areas as music, art, education, dramatics, and politics. The Athletic Recreation Commission was respon- sible for setting up the Intercollegiate and Intramural program for the past year. The members, representa- tives from all the sports activities on campus, also formulated the expenditures of funds allotted to the Commission. SOCIAL LIFE COMMISSION Social Life Commission performs the somewhat inglorious, but nevertheless essential job of schedul- ing the forthcoming year's social calendar. Not only do the member students keep our social date conflicts at a minimum, but they also select all committee members for every all-college event. Left to Right-Miss Paxton, Mr. Sheil, Maxon. Music filled the air at State last fall when 400 high school students assembled, rehearsed, and presented an excellent performance all in one week-end. This all-state sectional was only one of the many M. E. N. C. sponsored events. The winter highlight was the NYSSMA Conference in Rochester, where Fredonia students attended music demonstrations and concerts, and participated in woodwind ensembles. ln the Spring, a young musician's fancy turns to thoughts of composing. M. E. N. C. gave Fredoniais fledgling composers a chance to perform their works in a composition contest. Thus, M. E. N. C. kept the musical pot boiling throughout the year. L Another year of memories has been added to the succession of events that sum up our college life. These are the places that have come to be home to so many of us and the backdrops for some of our most exciting experiences. Whether we lived in the co-ops or in the dorms, the last minute cramming before exams, the excitement and confusion before a prom, the endless talking on into the night were common to us all and never forgotten moments. st H- floliiln Y H AE, dm -1-.. 1 ,V f i'. 1 Lawson Manor 5.4 H H VVCDIVlEN'S RESIDENCE I K 2' 6 fi -VA ffm! Frosh Camp and Week constitute one of the biggest and most exciting times of the entire year, not only for Frosh but the upperclassmen as well. After the preparatory Week-end of camping and getting acquainted, the Fresh- men are ready for the big week of initiation. No one ever forgets those green and white beanies, the cos- tumes for dress-up day, the talent show, parade, or the climactic bonfire signifying the end of initiation and the beginning of their college career. Farina MEN 'S I TRAMURALS Fredonia's athletic program not only includes inter-collegiate participation, but has a well rounded intra-mural program as well. Those who do not have suffi- cient time to play varsity ball can find an outlet in an excellent sports program set up by the Intra-mural Board. In the fall one can go out on the athletic field any Wednesday afternoon and find the Sophomores, under pilot Joe Rizzo, defending their title, or go up to the gym when basketball is at its peak and find The Old Men fSeniorsJ putting up a fight to the finish. Whichever way you look at it, the Men's Intra-murals is set up in such a way that any athletic interest displayed by a F.S.T.C. man may well be accommodated. OMEN'S ATHLETIC SSOCI TIO W.A.A. Competition, fun, and relaxation were the keynotes of this year's Women's Athletic Association program. This year was one of the most spiritedly competitive ever experienced among the college women. The first major victory was one by the Co-ops who walked oil with the Volley- ball Championship. Excitement was at its peak when Alumni Hall cle- feated the Co-ops by one point to capture the Basketball Crown. Then spring brought badminton, tennis, and softball teams into the limelight, with our softball team traveling to Oswego State Teachers for the Inter- Collegiate play-offs. Bette Davis won the Singles Championship in Bad- minton and Pittman and Case the Doubles Championship. Parties and several overnights at the College Camp rounded off the program of one of the most successful years of the W.A.A. - ix , -.gggqg ffw v '- ,mxh 3fggjn'--- Y -'J' Y . z' Q . WINCHESTER UNIT A HOUSE OF EASLING DATE: May 12, 1955 FREDONIAN OFFICE OLD MAlN,' To: Students, Faculty It has been our privilege and our responsibility to plan this, the 1955 edition of the Fredonian, as we saw fit. The specter of its success or failure has been our ever present companion and inspiration ever since that fateful night a year ago. There have been times we wished we had never accepted, but these have been far outnumbered by the moments of pride in doing a job for you and the College. Your sugges- tions have been many and valuable. We have tried to follow them as much as our experience and finances would allow us. We owe much to the professional work done on this book by Joe Hipp of the Erie Engraving Co., Vern Gardner of the Erie Printing Co., S. K. Smith Co., Blanding Photo, and our indispensable advisors, Mrs. Paffrath and Dr. Burton. The enthusiasm and hard work of our staff this year was gratifying and anticipatory of greater years ahead. It is our hope that you will all support the incoming editor and staff. The end result will be your reward. Our sincerest thanks and best wishes to everyone for a bright and happy future-the book wouldn't have been possible without you.
