'■ 1 Jr. Library •Meal Colley, •• York (12043) Introduction to . . ST A TE UNIVERSITY wr of NEW YORK AGRICULTURAL and TECHNICAL COLLEGE at COBLESKILL Morrisvillc Alfred Mr. Nielson, planning officer, Mis. Byrnes, finance officer, and Mrs. Comoy, secretary to Dr. Sahol, three of tin: people who help keep l)r. Salad’ office running smoothly, meet in the equipment planning of fin. . Welcome The memory of a first visit to Cobleskill and the “college on the lull” is usually a memory of the captivating view of the Schoharie County countryside. Beauty lies in every direction and the hills have a warm glow especially in the Fall. On the hill there is a small cluster of charming older buildings with the new campus extending westward along the rolling hillside. But a campus is not a college without people, and a college gains its character from the personality and attitudes of faculty, staff, and students. The newcomer soon learns that the warmth of the countryside permeates the campus as well. The entering Freshman starts with an exhaustive program of orientation which ends with the focus of attention placed on him and his schedule of classes. He quickly realizes that Cobleskill is devoted to outstanding teaching by faculty eminently qualified in their respective fields. He also discovers opportunity for individual expression both in the classroom and in the activities planned to satisfy the varying interests of an increasingly diverse body—student government, athletics, publications, theatre, music, departmental clubs and religious organizations. Convocations planned by a Faculty-Student Committee arc designed both for education and entertainment. Winter Carnival is an example of several all-college events appropriate to special seasons of the year. The events of college days lead to richer, fuller living as one learns and grows through the experience, both intellectual and social, which college provides. But there is one thing which seems to stand out in the memory of those whose college has been Cobleskill. It is the friendliness of all who are part of it. Through these pages we invite you to share our affection and concern for one DU. EDWAKI) J. SABOL President The College Council Row 2 (I. lo r.): Mr. Harold Warner. 'I he faculty members who are advisors to these organizations give of their time unstinting-ly, for they consider the benefit to the students to lx: a reward in itself. Student officers and club leaders gain valuable experience dealing with people in adult situations, and learning to accept responsibilities. Student leaders, by helping others, acquire independence, adaptability, and maturity. Mrs. Alice It. Chicn, yearbook advisor, meets with Andrea Horning, Editor in Chief, and Dino Martin, Photography Editor, on preliminary plans for the 1965 VOICE. Student Leadership Editor Gary Kniskcrn discusses ideas with the staff of HILL WHISPERS, the college newspaper. One of the most active groups on campus is the 1.1 I ILE I HEA 1 HE, headed hv James Sweeney. 17 Dedication Behind every successful organization you will find a pillar”. These pillars are the workers, the doers, the achievers, the very foundation of a college. Without them our administration would not he the strong force it is. Here is such a man; a man to whom we wish to dedicate our year’s time and work. Always with a smile and an open door, he has the extra minute to care about others. Never has his chair been denied to those with heavy hearts and a need for help. A faithful staffman and a loyal neighbor is truly a rarity. But without a doubt you will agree a better one you could not find. Although many may not know him, those that do will never forget his kindness. This quiet man warms the halls as he passes you with a warm look and a pleasant greeting. May we all strive to achieve the kind of greatness we have found in this man, our modest colleague, Mr. I.yon Mr. Lyon receives unexpected guest ;it liis office. Our faculty are no exception. Kvery summer many of our college professors travel abroad to further their education and enjoyment. On these next pages we will take you along the paths of some of our teachers as they visit and explore the highlights of several lands. The Aggies fared well in the dual meet competition with the LeMoync College Varsity, Mohawk C.C., and the Oswego State Freshman whom they soundly drubbed. The highlight of the season was the tracksters’ journey to Buffalo where they took second place in the Region 3 NCJAA Track and Field Championships. There were several outstanding performances by the members of the team. The most outstanding were the five fold medal winners who included lYIikc Pryce in the 100 yard dash, Jim Dalrymplc in the 120 yard high hurdles. Herb Vedder in the javelin throw. Boh Hick in the two-mile run, and Jim Dalrymplc again in the running high jump. Vedder and Dalrymple presently hold the all-time Region 3 record in the javelin throw and the running high jump. 80 Lift that Irg! 81 j '•s-J Tennis First Row: T. Brown, I.. Paul, I). Decker, R. The prediction for this year is that these racquet men will surpass even last year’s performance. Returning is, Larry Paul, a high ranking veteran on the squad, in addition to Herb Councill who is considered to Ik: the player showing most improvement. Also returning to the squad are established veterans such as Chris Duggan, Tom Brown and Dick Brown. 82 Golf J. Franco, A. Maragno, J. Ticc, K. Brcss, R. Case, T. Perhaps—but only l ccausc each day is uniquely different from all the others. A housemother, early each day, unlocks doors, raises blinds, and insures the smooth-running routine of the dorm. She checks rooms and visits with students who arc ill or who arc passing by. She is always available for counseling with anyone who has a problem or a special little worry. She devotes all her time to her “family” and usually understands them quite well because she has raised a family of her own. To the students living in the dorm the housemother may be known as “Mom.” She invariably loves young people and understands them. A housemother finds her occupation most rewarding when they respect her and obey the rules—not because they arc afraid of getting caught, but because they wish to please her. Each year students deemed worthy of the honor arc “tapped” by the Senior members. Work usually begins with a committee. One project is the complex problems of Orientation. Aiding the incoming Freshman is a responsibility which must be well met. Orange Key is at work in other areas throughout the year. too. As illustrated on the following pages, members serve as a committee during Orientation (I); they receive assignments from their president, John Kappler, which are carried out faithfully (2); after posts are set up, there may be a moment to relax before the masses of newcomers arrive (3); Names must be checked and visitors correctly directed (4); the guides indicate points of interest on. campus tours ff ); members who conduct the lours outside on the campus share the assignment with others who are responsible for guiding guests through the college buildings (6). 128 Data Processing The new Data Processing curriculum is aimed at the training for technical and supervisory employment in the field of Data Processing with emphasis on application in business. The Data Processing program will provide opportunities for employment as journeymen programmers, supervisors of small installations, assistant directors of large installations. Another aim of the curriculum is to provide data processing familiarity to business and nonbusiness students. If business is to progress, the youth of today must gain an understanding and knowledge of data processing principles and concepts. The Data Processing curriculum at Cobleskill is a major step in helping students achieve fundamental understanding for future employment in business, government, and industry. 130 Senior Directory 131 That, Into His Fateful Heap Of Days A nd Deeds, AIMMKC.
