Ckim You have devoted your time and energy to be of service to anyone at any time, and humbly ask nothing in return. Your patient guidance, unselfish devotion and sympathetic understanding has captured the respect and friendship of all your students. This is not only true here on the hill, because you have also won the admiration and respect of the citizens of the Community with your active participation in church and other community affairs. As we leave this June and enter the cruel world, we will take with us the respect for knowledge that you have instilled within us. Because of this, the 1962 VOICE staff humbly dedicates our yearbook to you-MRS. ALICE R. CHIEN. Acting President’s Message It is our wish that each of you in the Class of 1962 begin a good, full life. We hope you profit to the utmost from the knowledge and experiences you have shared with all of us here at Cobleskill. Anne and Charles Gaffney A great and loved man has gone from our midst; but we shall not soon forget him. Memories of him will remain in the manifold areas of his deep concern for our personal welfare and for that of the college. A very tangible evidence of that concern will be those students who benefit from the recently established Ray L. Wheeler Memorial Scholarship Fund which will be an appropriate application of his belief that 'one of life's greatest tragedies is the loss of an individual who is prevented from realizing his greatest potential because of lack of money.' RAY L. WHEELER Mrs. Roy L. Wheeler accepts contribution to Ray L. Wheeler Memorial Scholarship Fund from Robert Wicks, President of the Closs of 1961. Jn Mentoriam 7 SECOND ROW: Mr. Roger Becker, Mr. George K. Decker, Dr. Seotcy M. Phillips, Mr. Harold Wornor. FIRST ROW: Mr. William F. Spencer, chairman, Mrs. J. Robert Johnson, Mr. Joseph Meade. ABSENT: Dr. Thomas J. Doylo, Mrs. Philip Schuyler. Institute Council As an advisory board to the President, the Institute Council aids in the more vital matters of administration and public relations policy. The members of the council are outstanding in the fields of Law, Education, Agriculture, Business and Public Service. Their interest in promoting opportunities for post-high-school training in education has made them a vital asset to the Institute. We the class of '62 are sincerely appreciative of and grateful to the Council for their guidance, contributions and encouragement to us and all the people on the Hill. 8 Open Mouse 10 Just like ol l times. Single file, everyone, and just keep walking. A live radio broadcast! Moving-Up £)ay With these traditional ceremonies, the graduating students are welcomed into the body of Alumni, and the Junior students become members of the Senior Class. Traditionally the day begins with a get together for all students. This year it took the form of Breakfast on the Campus. During the morning, the annual Orange Key Tapping takes place on the Quad, followed by non-academic awards, presentation of next year's officers of clubs and organizations, and the announcement of the dedication of the current Voice. This year an additional part of the ceremonies was the presentation to Mrs. Wheeler, by the graduating class, of an additional sum of money to be applied to the Ray L. Wheeler Scholarship Fund. Inter-class athletic contests and a barbecue occupied the afternoon, the Victory going this year to the Seniors. In the evening the Traditional Torch Ceremony was presented. Each Senior bequeathed his torch to his Junior Torchbearer. Moving-Up T ay It wd d windy day, wasn't it? Coffee and buns start the active day. A glowing moment. Something captured their attention. Mrs. Ray I. Wheeler accepts the dedication of the Voice to her husband. 13 Moving-lip Day Seems good not to have classes today. Oli! what memories! Commencement This year Commencement has been marked by the additional privilege of having the commencement ceremony once again on the Hill. In years past, the ceremony has, of necessity, been held in various other places due to the ever-growing number of students and parents attending. For the first time a huge tent and canopy was raised over our College Quadrangle. Under this protective cover the members of the graduating class were able to receive their diplomas in physical and acoustical comfort. A reception on the Quadrangle followed for the graduates and their parents and friends. Townspeople were enabled to attend, and it is to be hoped that as the tradition becomes established, they may feel themselves more a part of events here on the Hill. May the friendships, adventures, and achievements which come to a climax on this day follow them through a life rich in happiness and success. JUda!na co„,„. i I have my sponsor, Mrs. Helen Heacock, from Gloversville whom I met while working as an air stewardess, to thank for inviting me to the United States to attend the State University of Cobleskill. It is a privilege, an honor to be here and have the feeling that I am accepted by all of you that I have met while attending Cobleskill. Before coming to the United States, I lived in Tokyo, but after living in the beautiful scenic valley of Schoharie County, for two years, I wish that I could stay longer. The people are very friendly and are willing to give a ready, helping hand whenever it is needed. I am glad that I chose a small college because everyone seems so friendly. The faculty and students are more closely-knit and a student can go to see the faculty at any time for extra help. I wish that all of you could have the opportunity to visit a foreign country to meet the people to get a deeper understanding of their feelings, too. I shall never forget all of my Cobleskill classmates. This will be the most memorable experience of my life. Officers and Advisors We, the class of 1962, wish to extend our sincere appreciation to our advisors, class officers, fellow students and to all the faculty members who have helped make our stay at Cobleskill an everlasting experience. Under the able guidance of our Senior Class Advisors, Miss Claudia A. Pound and Dr. Norman J. Curtis, we have .gained much of the maturity, understanding and independence necessary to take our places in society. With outstanding leadership, our class officers have provided us with the inspiration needed to make this a prosperous year filled with abundant college activity. In years to come, we will find it impossible to forget the memorable experiences we shared with Cobleskill-and we will strive to be a credit to our college and our community. Wright, N. Brownell. {junior Class Officers As we the class of '63 began our journey for a higher education, great anticipation surrounded our lives. We chose to guide us, Bob Broderick, President; Don Wright, Vice-President; Linda Maher, Secretary,- and Nanette Brownell, Treasurer. Our advisors, Miss Marian Jardine and Mr. Donald Demick encouraged us and helped us to lighten our footsteps. Our first successful stop was the Halloween Dance. We continued our journey with the next scenic stop at the Christmas Festival. Around the bend we came to the last lap which opened the doors to the many visitors of Open House. We reached the climax of our trip as many were inducted into the Orange Key Society on Moving-Up Day which became our most memorable event of the year. 66 , t x FIRST ROW: J. Smith, S. Ingcrsoll. D. As an indication of their trustworthiness and ability to perform more than is required, they wear the symbol of honor, the Orange Key. Through this society they continue to serve the campus by a spirit of good will towards all. J dMAlHistt Message to the Class of 962 At first it seemed presumptuous that a Freshman President should attempt any advice to a group senior to him at Cobleskill. Upon reflection, hov ever, I realize that this is an opportunity to speak to you not of the last two years (happy as they may have been for you), but of the years which lie ahead. Whatever your success in college, whatever your field of specialization, you will surely be judged in the future by the quality of your thinking and the attitude you reflect both on the job and in the community. No matter how successful you may be in your work, your greatest achievement will come as a result of your ability to recognize what is right, and your willingness to think and act accordingly, v hafever the popular opinion of the moment may be. I know your instructors here at Cobleskill have made an effort to mold that kind of thinking into your everyday attitude. If it is reflected in your future actions, we will have been successful in our efforts with you, and you will have achieved one of the marks of a truly educated man. fj-j.Jl.JdA President 12ft MR. Rothfuss 142 C ’Envoi If sometime in the years to come, these pages assist one of us, only one, to drift back to the precious days we have enjoyed on the hill .... days during which, being human, we often complained because our hands were cold or because college discipline did not permit breakfast in bed, while at the same time we were serenely happy amid the un-faltering friendships of our classmates .... If sometime in the future this volume recalls to one of us, only one, some small kindness or favor that a friend performed, and if, remembering this favor we have the desire to reach out over distant seas, foreign shores, or just across the back fence to grasp the hand of another in friendship, or possibly, to further world peace .... If'sometime while pursuing this VOICE of 1962, one of our number relives one fleeting second of the trials, tribulations, pranks, and joys of our college life which hopefully is portrayed between these covers, then this book will have had a purpose, and the members of the Staff will feel honored because of their part in its inception. by Tony Congdon, for the staff 143 Judex ADMINISTRATION Acting President's Message .. 6 Cafeteria ... 138 Division Chairman .......... —130-131 Faculty 132-136 Housemothers . ..... - 138 Maintenance . .. .. .139 Office Staff 139 CAMPUS QUEEN _ 110-111 CANDIDS 72, 107, 112 CONVOCATIONS 96 DEDICATION 4, 5 FALL EVENTS 19-21 FOREIGN STUDENT ... ... 22 FOREWORD 2-3 FRATERNITIES Alpha Lambda Phi ...................... 104-106 Theta Gamma 98-100 Zeta Alpha Phi ........................ 101-103 Phi Theta Kappa .... .. 108-109 IN MEMORIAM 7 INSTITUTE COUNCIL 8 JUNIORS Class Officers and Advisors ................ 66 Agricultural Business . . ... 69 Agricultural MachineYy ... .69 Agronomy 71 Animal Husbandry 71 Business Management 68 Dairy Technology 68 Food Service Administration 70 Horticulture 70 Nursery Education 67 Secretarial Science 67 L'ENVOI 143 ORGANIZATIONS Agricultural Production Club .............. 88 Agricultural Machinery Club 86 Agronomy Club................................ 85 Business Service Club..... ....— — — 87 Dairy Tech Club ............................ 85 Faculty Student Association ..................74 Girls' Chorus ... ..... 84 Hill Whispers ............................ 78-79 Horl.
