The members as appointed by the Governor are outstanding in the fields of Agriculture, Business, Law, Education and Public Service. Their interest in promoting opportunities for post-high school education and training make them a vital asset to the Institute. 8 Visitors wait in lino to register at the East door of the Gymnasium. Ofre t Open House is held every spring for the purpose of showing the public what is done at the Cobleskill State Institute. Parents attend as well as those students who have the desire to enter the Institute in the coming fall. With the help of our loyal advisors, Mrs. Louise Edwards and Mr. George Berner, wc have worked and planned and dreamed toward our ultimate goal-success. The good will and cooperation experienced through the leadership of our class officers Daniel Helmer, our President, John Maiuccoro, our Vice-President, Patricia Pinter, our Secretary and Sharon Lenphear, our Treasurer—will help us to remember the Hill at Cobleskill from which we will soon depart. 18 MARGARET N. Robert Tryon, JoArtn lomboriloni, Linda Skeclc, M.ny Loo Frazier. tycutuvi @C Z44 O ccerA Upon the completion of our first year on the hill, it was with a great deal of happiness that we took a backward glance. Under the capable leadership of our officers: Robert Tryon, President; Linda Skeele, Vice-President; JoAnn Lombardoni, Secretary; Mary Lee Frazier, Treasurer, v e ventured forth toward our first undertaking, the annual Halloween Dance. With the help and guidance of our advisors. Miss Pound and Dr. Curtis, this project was successful and buoyed up by the assurance that such success can bring, v e confidently set to work with the Seniors on the annual Christmas Festival As v e planned and prepared for Open House, we realized that v e had mastered many of the ways of college as well as our studies, and were both confident and proud as we showed the High School students our hill. At last come Moving Up Day, the last of our Junior endeavors, for some of us had the distinct honor of being tapped for Orange Key. At the end of the Candlelight ceremony, which meant we were no longer juniors, all of us felt the responsibility and establishment of tradition that was entrusted to us as we became Seniors on the Hill. 57 MRS. Its purpose is to promote scholarship, develop character, and to cultivate fellowship among the students of both sexes in the junior colleges of the United States. Our chapter is a member of the national organization which now has over 200 local chapters extending from Maine to the Canal Zone. The history behind Phi Theta Kappa is an interesting one. It originated under the name of Kappa Phi Omicrcn at Stephens College, Missouri, in 1910. At this time it was associated only with junior colleges for women but it was later decided to establish an honorary society, chapters of which should have a common character, standard, and similarity of organization. In choosing the name, the committee was influenced by the fact that the name cf the honorary society for senior colleges is Phi Beta Kappa. Accordingly, the name Phi Theta Kappa was chosen and the society was incorporated in Missouri as a national organization. Phi Theta Kappa began to grow and official recognition was given by the American Association of Junior Colleges in 1929. This meant that Phi Theta Kappa would be recognized as a national honor scholarship society for junior colleges. 99 I)r. Wheelor rocoivo Honorory Membership from President Gerald Schopinsky. fo ‘7{ ee£esi With pride and reflected honor, the Lambda Gamma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, National Honorary Fraternity, cites Ray L. Wheeler, B.S., M.S., L.H.D., President of the State University Institute of Cobleskill as the first honorary member from among the Institute's faculty members. Cobleskill Institute is fortunate to have the inspirational leadership of a man who has from his youth excelled in contributing to the welfare of his fcllowmen. This notable record of outstanding service includes countless acts of thoughtful, kindly, inspirational encouragement to young and old, sick and well, weak and strong alike. As a member of the World War I First Division, Fifth Field Artillery, A.E.F., Ray L. Wheeler was awarded: the French Croix de Guerre, the French Military Medal, the italian War Cross, Belgian Croix de Guerre, the U. S. Victory Medal and the 1st Division Medal. 100 Or.
