VOICE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AGRICULTURAL AND TECHNICAL INSTITUTE AT COBLESKILL FOREWORD Now that we have reached the top rung of our educational ladder we can see no further, for this ladder leans against the blank wall of the future, against the blank wall of history yet unmade and unwritten. Glancing backward down the ladder the two rungs, our college years, stand solid and sure against the ground, for they represent our recent growth, our entrance to adulthood, our new knowledge and confidence. We take comfort in their solidity, for they assure us we have nothing to fear. Wherever the future may lead, wherever the wall may end, the knowledge and wisdom these rungs represent shall guide us and carry us upward. That none of us shall ever lose sight of what we have done here, we, the staff of the Voice for 1960, present this book. 2 HIGH UPON THE HILL 4 When one stands at the bottom of a Hill And casts his eyes upward Across the green and verdant slope, 'I'he way is long... As we stand above the valley. We share the secret of the hill And it is this: “No man can stand complacent. Satisfied with what he is,” For each hill hides another, beading on. Steeper, longer Harder to ascend, but there. We must go up, We cannot stop our climb. Our lives are thus. DEDICATION 6 MR. A. RICHARD TINAPP This hook is dedicated to PROFESSOR A. RICHARD TINAPP Whose devotion to culture, unremitting and open-minded, is a constant reminder of scholarship and the spirit of learning. For that we shall continue to he grateful. As he directs us to increasing awareness of our cultural heritage, we realize that his sympathetic teaching and his presence today in our undergraduate community is our good fortune. Barbara Lcitner and Fred Guay reigned as King and Queen over the Coronation Loft to right: Richard Monell, President; Dominick Caputo, Vice-President; Elaine McCarty, Secretary; Dorothy Alcxopoulos, Treasurer. We are now leaving the scene of our most memorable experiences — those of working together in an atmosphere of good will and cooperation, and climbing toward our goal — success. Our two years at Coblcskill have passed quickly but not without fulfillment. Many activities were planned and carried out with the help of our advisors — Miss Katharine I. Smith and Mr. Walter J. Clark. Leadership is necessary and with the ability of Richard Monell as Class President, Dominick Caputo as Vice-President, Elaine McCarty as Secretary, and Dorothy Alcxopoulos ns Treasurer, we feel that the Class of 1900 is ready to venture out... 18 2k CAROL M. The ear started with the election of our most capable officers: David Simmons. President: Benjamin King. Vice-President: Clovys Coyer. Secretary: Sharon I.anphear. Treasurer. With the help and guidance of our advisors. Mrs. Kdwards and Mr. Berner, we. from every corner of the stale, were drawn into the unity of the Junior Class. With this new found unity, we sponsored our first project, which was the Halloween Dance. With the assurance such a success can leave, we ventured on to more activity. With the Seniors, we sponsored an impressive and very memorable Christmas I estival. As we planned and prepared for Open House, we realized that we had mustered many of the ways of college and our studies and we were confident atid proud as we showed the High School students our Hill. At last came the long awaited Moving-Up Day —the culmination of our vear's endeavors. Some of us had the distinct honor of being tapped into the Orange kev Honor Society. All of us felt the responsibility and tradition that was being placed in our hands as we became Seniors on the Hill. 56 J_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ AGRICULTURAL BUSINESS MR. Through the yearbook, it is hoped that the Students will remember and relive the activities and events of the past year. Each year one of the staff members attends the State University of 70 New York Press Conference to exchange ideas and discuss the common problems of their publications. David C. This record was accumulated on the basis of four dual meets, all of which were won; three triangular meets, two of which were won; an invitation meet which they won; and the National Junior College fNJCAA) championship which they won by a perfect score. In all, the team had five perfect score wins in 10 races. The high point of the season was the Canisius College invitation meet at Buffalo in which Coblcskili defeated highly favored Alfred University and 11 other four-year colleges. Cobleskill’s only defeat was by St. John’s freshmen in a triangular meet at West Point in which both teams outclassed the Army Plcbes. St. Johns went on to an undefeated season and climaxed it by winning the ICAAA championship at New York City on November 16. The junior college championship was Cobleskill’s fourth in a row and eighth in 11 years. It was the first time in history that any team won this event by a perfect score. The season in general was the best iti Cobleskill history, according to Athletic Director Albert W. Iorio. In a post season 10-mile YMCA sponsored road race at Poughkeepsie on Thanksgiving Day. Tom Parry was the individual winner and the team composed of Farrv, Marincic, Faxon, and the Schopinsky brothers, beat the New York Pioneer Club and all other opposition for the team trophy. During the season the team won five team trophies, 12 individual trophies, and nine medals. The team personnel is as follows: Co-captain Norm Marincic of Watertown and Richard Schopinsky of Marlboro; Tom Farrv of Schenectady, Lew Faxon of Sanger-ties. Bob Millen of West Islip. (Jerald Schopinsky of Marlboro, Malty Brown of Coble-skill, John Butler of Richmondville. Dave Simmons of Poughkeepsie, and Harold Edmonds of Cherry Valley. THOMAS HALE HAMILTON On January 1, 1960, Doctor Hamilton, the new President of the Stale University of New York, visited our campus and was the guest of the faculty at a dinner that evening. The administration of State University’s third president, Dr. Thomas Hale Hamilton. began in our senior year with many indications that his presidency will span a period of great developments for our college. In his visit to the Cobleskill campus, he gave us reason to believe that we shall be a growing college with more buildings and more students. His inaugural address, the first ever attended by a delegation from our student council, stressed his pledge of a leadership of action so that no young citizen of this state shall be denied a collegiate educational opportunity consistent with his talent and diligence . . .; that no young citizen of this state shall be denied the opportunity to demonstrate that he is better blessed with brains, with creative ability, with energy than his fellows. I)r. Hamilton called upon us as students and citizens together with our faculty and our Council to join in a University-wide effort to create and maintain a “democracy of excellence.” We, the class of 1960, welcome President Hamilton and pledge to him and our Alma Mater our best efforts to advance truly democratic values. 114 MR.
