On one bright sunny day On the I Ith of May I was brought into the world On my head there was a curl. The days, the months and then the years Have gone by with loads of tears, But now I'm, big and only three Mother sent me to the nursery Up the street on the hill In this dear village of Coblesicill. Nov I'm five and in grade school And on the first day I've broken the rule. I tried so hard not to pull her hair But I couldn't resist while she stood there. Nov I’m 16 and in high school 3ut now I've practiced all the rules. Now I'm President of the United States And fust goes to show who rates. Mrs. Holmes graduated in 1933 from Middlo-bury College. Middlebury, Vermont, and joined our Institute faculty instructing in foods, interior decorating, chemistry, and clothing in the Home Economics Department. She also served as house mother at Hill Residence. In the years of 1933 to 1935, she was an active member of the College Athletic Council and was on the Girls Council instructing as Coach for the Girls Baskotball Team. She was also a member on the Grange Degreo Toam. In 1935 she resigned to practice the homemaking which sho had been teaching. Miss McMenemy became Mrs. Donald Holmes, and settled down in Lawyersville. Together, they raised three boys and now the fourth has taken her away from the Institute Nursery. Mrs. Holmes returned to the hill in 1951, as an instructor in the Nursery Education Department, teaching arts and crafts and childrens' literature % In the community, she has been an outstanding worker in church, political activities, home burea j and civic group affairs, to which she gave initiative time and talent. During the years 1951-1954, she was active a member of the Assembly Program Committee t Advisor of the Arts and Craft Club, the Student Council, and the Senior Class of 1954. Giving extra service, she was patroness of the Alpha Ch i Omicron Sorority. She is loved by all the students; not only bv her nursery girls, but for her inspiration in activity co-ordination. She often encouraged decoratio committees to dream up mood themes. Wit hubby, Don, she enjoyed dances and fun on th hill. We wish to express our sincere appreciation t you. Mrs. Holmes, for your splendid work. w€ |j done. [4] 6 To the Class of ’55: As you leave the Institute after a stay of two years here, what are some of the things that you will take away with you? First of all I hope there will be a host of pleasant memories—of friendships modo, of work and play, of plans and dreams, and accomplishments—memories which will grow fonder as the years go by. Secondly, we are sure that you have built a foundation of understanding and of technical skills and knowledge on which you can develop your life and your life's work in a way satisfying to you and to your family and helpful to your community. Lastly, we hope that each of you will go out into life confident that this is the best country in ail the world, and that your opportunities for success and happiness are limited only by your willingness to give your very best in every way. Governor Dewey appointed on November 22, 1954, the nine-member Council to reploce the former Board of Trustees of the Institute. The Council includes: William F. Spencer of Middleburg, David Enders of Central Bridge. Kenneth H. Fake of Cobleskill, Mrs. Lillian Strykor of Jefferson. Mrs. Margie Lee Johnson of Middleburg. John M. Von Voris of Cobleskill. 7. Paul Kane of Cobleskill. George H. Decker of Jefferson, a graduate in 1928 from the Institute, and Dr. Seeley M. Phillips of Richmondville. These people are appointed by the Governor to assist and advise the Director in matters of administrative and public relations policies. Our first big job was to undertake the traditional Hollowe'en Dance which was very successful. Near the latter part of the first semester our second job was well underway. The annual Christmas Festival. Our third and final job for the year was to provide a good time for the Seniors on Moving Up Day. We sponsored a picnic at Howe's Cave in which both juniors, seniors and faculty had a good time. Now, a year has passed; we are Seniors. Thus being here a year v e know the ropes and arc on hand anytime vtte can be of service. We have participated in such events as Kampus Kapers, Christmas Festival. Moving-Up Day and Graduation exercises. Yes, both years have been both scholastically and socially successful and packed full of long-lasting memories. Yes. this has been the Class of “55 . Unfortunately, its commentary has not always been complimentary because of various factors that have arisen to place the fraternity in a controvial situation. The purpose of a ''-atornity is questionable, granted, but in most cases, one cannot learn to appreciate their existence until one has been actively associated with this kind of an organization. Then, and only then, can the individual realize its significance, because he sees the benefits being derived by its members in such a relationship. Within this unique primary group, the members exercise the closest and most sincere kind of comradship that can be possible under the existing circumstances. Through their inter-oersonal relationship, the members learn to understand and appreciate their brothers, make value judgements on the basis of personal worth, rather than on superficial appearances that tend to be deceiving, which in turn breed snobbishness and cliques. Living in a common house, governed by its members, soon develops a sense of responsibility that is an aspect of growing up. Along with this sense of responsible, its members learn to solve their own problems that are bound to arise through the clash individua ism — the prerequisite of diversity — and understand the dispositions of human nature that have fascinated man for many centuries.
