The first lire company was formed in 1864. In the early days of the department, three companies constituted the department, two hose companies and one hook and ladder company, known as that time as the Star Engine Company No. 1, Tivoli Hose Company and the Active Ilook and Ladder Company. The Star Engine Company was later changed to the Courier Hose Company in honor of Charles Courier, who did so much for the department in those days. These companies maintained their names from that time until about 1924 when the first piece of motorized equipment was purchased, the LaFrance, which is still in operation. At that time the Courier Hose Company and the Tivoli Hose Company disbanded and reorganized under the name of Pumper and Chemical No. 1. A few years later the Hook and Ladder Company was motorized and that truck was in use until late in 1948 when the village purchased a new truck. The Seagrave, the second pumper truck wa9 purchased about 1944 to supplement the fire fighting equipment of the village. The Emergency Squad was formed about 1940 and the members solicited money in order to buy their truck which is still in use. The Eire Department can point with pride to the fact that during the past few years, it ha9 escaped having any disastrous fires despite their prevalence around the country. Mr. Robert Northrup is the chief of the fire department at the present time. The department officers on behalf of the men wish to thank the State Institute for honoring the Fire Department by dedicating the year book to The Cohleskill Fire Department.
