Juniors!!! Not Freshmen to be laughed at and ridiculed 5 not Seniors to beyheld in reverence but Juniors, just Juniors. And we lovedfitf elated over our appearances of last year, as Fr men and we had come back to N. P. N. again determined to show all the merits any class could show as Juniors. MARGARIQT BAKER In September, 1926, a group of High School grads knocked at the doors of the .New Paltz Normal School, clamoring for permission to enter. Upon showing their passes tdiplomasl their desire was fulfilled. Upon their entrance they became known as Freshmen, a term used to denote a desire for knowledge, but in truth, showing decided tendencies of ignorance. a The first event of the year was a Get-Together-Party, given jointly by Arethusa, Clio, and Ago. Entertainment and dancing afforded the Fresh a pleasant evening and a chance to become acquainted. After that, the Freshmen settled down to hard work, many of them making good records in class work. Later, others distinguished themselves in Basket-ball, Polhemus, Andrews, Malloy, Cohen, O'Reilly, Smith, Aust-in and Lucy are the names that are asso- ciated with innumerable victories. ' , On February 21, 1927, the Freshmen were brought together for the purpose of organization. Walter Taylor was chosen to lead the class. The other officers were: Margaret Polhemus, Vice-President, Adele Hebler, Secretary and lV.llI1'g211'Ct Baker, Treasurer. At this time, plans were made for the Freshmen Hop which took place on MZt1'Cll 26, 1927. The affair was a delightful success establishing a precedent for future freshmen classes. Considering the splendid spirit and success it has gained, the class of 1929 excels the standards of N. P. N. that it will be able to uphold the traditions of N. P. N. for many years to come. 4 4 4 2 S 4 2 s S A S 'w u ,D X.- 4. It is . difficult to associate the 1927 self reliant girl with that traditional D seminary lass several years back. Those were the days when it li X was immoral to go automobile riding after dark. Those were the days when the students indifferently sat back and listened to the ' dictates of a remote faculty. l - Now we have a body which is learning rapidly to assume self , imposed responsibilities. A student body which is feeling a much appreciated afiiliation with the faculty members. t What- has accomplished this change? The story begins with last year when Mr. van den Berg consented to have a body of student representatives and two faculty advisors confer to draw up . a Constitution and Rules which would govern the student body. It was not easy to begin, but the little body finally succeeded in launching out for the consideration of students and faculty the results of a few weeks of hard labor. It was received with amazing ' enthusiasm, and a very important factor in this new regime is the . splendid cooperation of the students. Their spirit Will make it the acme of successful enterprises. ' So now-Cheers for Mr. van den Berg who made it possible! cheers for the faculty who have become united with us! cheers lastly ' and loudly for the students who silently but forcefully buoy up the Student- Government to greater and certain success. , E. In fact we are they now. For weeks we worked with tremendous responsibility- JUNIOR PROM. Saturday morning, May the first, dawned the most perfect of days. On that glorious morning if one were to steal silently into the gym early, he would find the sun slyly smiling at what he found there. And no wonder, for the gym was all dressed up. It was no longer a barren room but a garden in which purple Wisteria hung from white arbors over one's head. At the west stairway lead to a cozy college room which had once been the stage of the gym. This was dedicated to the Seniors who were to be our guest of the evening. All too slowly the clock turned its hands until we came upon an entirely different scene. We now have the air filled with the strains of a dance orchestra and the floor crowded with happily dancing couples. At the doorway stands the much dreaded receiving line welcoming late arrivals. But time and tide wait for no man, and before we knew it the Junior PROM had arrived at a successful conclusion. - SENIOR PROM The date was January 29, 1927, the time 8:00 P.M., and the place the gymnasium. A Near the appointed time, cars of all descriptions could be seen swinging around the drive. Shortly after the cars had deposited their passengers, the dancing began. It might well have been termed a night in Spain, because of the decorations. Foliage with vividly hued leaves formed an arch- I P J , G fxvxxvfxvnxvaxvfxvnxvnxvnxvfsvfwfxvfxvfx 9 Page eighty-seven 0-s. We VAVAVAVZXVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVAV 5 f N way above the dancers. The windows were transformed into purple church windows through which light softly shone. A splendid birch tree spread out its adorned branches, forming a screen in front of the stage. But the best things must end some time even though it be a Senior Prom. Surely it will always hold a place dear in our meni- ories. ' LYCEUM COURSE The Lyceum Course of this year was opened with the Accordion Trio which proved to be a true omen of the enjoyable entertain- ments that followed, The program was varied and, best of all, it was modern. True, the appeal was to the sentiments, but that did not detract from the pleasure it gave as the 'selections were given in a charming and talented manner. They made of the Jazz, not a savage, primitive discord as is often the ease, but a light, dainty, efferveseent thing that capti- vated the ear and brought a spontaneous smile to the lips. For our next number we were fortunate in securing the Sym- phony Orchcstra of Carl Simonis. They rendered a variety of high class selections including 'several by the talented pianist Mr. Singer. These were received with favor by the people who appre- ciated having with them this well known Orchestra and pianist. Their program carried one from dark turbulent sea of work and trouble to the sunny realm of mirth and happiness. Nippo Strongheart--an Indian chief from the 'state of Wash- ington gave us a vivid picture of present day life on the Indian reservations and plainly showed the need for radical changes in the govcrnmcnt's 'management of Indian affairs. His chieftain attire added a touch of reality. Another charming number was the Italian Quartet. This was in G AVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVA 9 Page eighfy-eight QKVAVAVAVAVAVAVAvnxvfxvnxvzxvnxvfxvia 5 4 strong contrast to the preceding musical number, but it was fully as enjoyable. They gave several novel and interesting selections which made the program outstanding. This was followed by Helen Simpson, a clever impersonator. Her ingenuity in costumving, coupled with her dramatic ability pro- vided an interesting evening. Musical Duo-A performance which was a pleasing combina- tion of bits and bits. There was a bit of Madame Butterfly, a bit of impersonation a bit of musical comedy,-in fact a variety, part of which made an especial appeal to everyone. The Sitting Trio gave the best musical program heard in the auditorium. The sympathetic accompaniment of the father was so artistic, so spirited, so sustaining that it made this trio excel even the Symphony.-We want to hear the Sitting Trio again. Up to a time within the past three years, Ago stood for a small group of girls struggling for unity and prosperity with little aid or encouragement. But recently, new plans have brought about new successes, and new and hopeful interest. For Ago now has come up to a fraternity standing, has secured a house of her own, and a larger group of happy girls, who have enjoyed working for their fraternity and for their Alma Mater. A tiny whisper that cooperation has done much toward bring- ingabout the spirit of Ago which now predominates in our fraternity life, giveslaway the secret of our happiness this year. It is our main desire to spread this theme of cooperation not only throughout future years of fraternity life, but also through the years of the life of our Alma Mater, that friendship, loyalty, and truth may ever be the background of New Paltz .Normal standards. 4 4 + K J S fxvfxvnxvxxvnxvnxvnxvnxvnxvA.vAvAvfxvfx 9' Page ninety-six 90114 as-manga .l H9 G, VAVAVAVXXVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVAV 5 AGON I AN ' SORORITY Cmfh SENIOR MEMBERS RUTH BOOK ICATHERINE CARROLL CA'1'Hl'IRlNl'l4 FLANAGAN ES'1'IIl'ZR JONES 'DOROTHY IKOHL GRACE LEIBI' ' ANNA L,ES'1'RANGl'I ' IJOROTHY NIACIKICNZIE RUTH IWILLER - FLORENCE ABBOTT IWADELINE BRICNNAN LOUISE BRITTON ANNA CARROLL CHARI.O'l l'l'I COWIIC OLIVE EDEN EVELYN GILL HELEN GUMAICR JUN1 OR M EMB DOROTHY MUTII H1-:LI-:N OAKLEY ETHICL ORDWAY AWILIJRED SMITH AL1CI'I SNYDER RUTH SIIAHR BICATRICE T1-IOMPHON M ILDRED VAN BRUNT REBA WEYANT ERS' ESTELLE HANSIJIQII RUTTI HOWE W ILMOT MIIJIIIAIIK ICI.-IZABETI-I URR CATHERINE SAMAIIS ETH EL S IL KWORT H CHARLOTTE SMITH DORIS STOCK MARION WHITEH1-:AII FR ESHMEN MEMBERS FRANCES AGOR ALICE BAIICTTI FRANCES BELL ALENE CABLES JANETTE FERRY MARIE GILMAN EMMA HULTS ELICANOR IWALLOY FLORENCE NIA'1'TICE LILLIAN MILLER CHARLOTTE RICH LILLIAN SHILLINGER EIIGARITA WHIGAM NA1'AI1IIC WHIGAM G AVKXVAVAYVANXAVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVA 'Z Page ninety-ciglIt K f- ' - 0QQXVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVGYAVAVAVAVQ . 'We may even trace our existence back to those members of the Phi Kappa Pi Literary Society who felt the need in this school for a closer bond of fellow- ship among certain students for the promotion of a friendly spirit and best intellectual endeavor. It is to these worthy pioneers that we now look with reverence for thc spirit of progress which theyshowed' these many years ago and receive their trust with the promise to always go forwa1'd. It has even been the earnest desire of the members of Clio to foster a spirit of 'sisterly relationship, not only within the narrow pale of the Sorority but among the students of the school as a whole. And as in times gone by, eaeh year brings new lifeg invigorating and stimulating the old. The girls of New Paltz are different with each new year even as one generation is from another. But though in dress, in custom, in manners, the girls of the present are a different type from their predecessors, there is one common spirit that permeates through each group of Arethusa maids. It is the spirit that began long ago-the feeling of love for their sisters,- for their Alma Mater. This is the main objective of each girl, and here's wishing that she may always succeed. The Arethusa House which Homes a certain percentage of the maidens is the seat of many activities during the year. We have a Theatre party, Skiing Club, Roller Skating Club and Arethusa play to remember among the many things which occurred am-ing 1926-1927. Y But let us hope that the many pleasures come second in our memoriesto the real worthwhile benefits that the Sorority and its 'spirit has done for us. . E. Especially in the rapid progress made. Six years ago, who ever llCttl'Cl of the basketball or baseball schedule being made out at the connnencement of the school year? Did you ever hear of the girl's varsity? Were trips to Oneonta, to Albany, to Plattsburg, to Stroudsburg in vogue? An advance schedule was unheard of and we were lucky to get as far as Middle- town or Ellenvillc. To-day,'the first thing we do upon entering Normal is to greet Mr. van den Berg with a hand shake and with the left hand pass over five dollars. What for? Why he gives us tickets to the Lyceum course and athletic events. A splendid amount is turned over to the A.A. Board and they pay the expenses necessary to athletic teams. i The A.A. oh yes, every one becomes a member upon payment of his initial fee. Now he is allowed to partake in any sport, in any meeting, and helps to choose the members of the A.A. Board. Whereas, in days gone by it was only considered a pleasure to he a member of a team, it is now considered an honor. Such athletic ability is acknowledged by the receiving of varsity letters, class numerals and the placement of the team picture in the class book. These advantages promote an enthusiasm throughout the student body that binds one person to another and all to the Alma Mater. ' W. V. W. K s J Q? All preceding classes have been obliged to stay within the ordinary paths of workg but our class consisting of around thirty girls made the opportunity of starting a new and enjoyable way of studying the theatre. We decided to make a trip to New York and visit the theatre in connection with our class work. Miss Giddings, our Modern Drama instructor was very en- thusiastic over the ideag and it was through her kind endeavors and Mr. van den Berg's willing consent that the plans evolved from a hazy dream to a vivid reality. We were saved from the necessity of sitting two in a seat or being sadly left outside the theatre doors by the able work of the committee consisting of Alice Castle, Pearl Snyder and Helen Mitchell. Early Saturday morning before the sun was up we left the village of New Paltz. Arriving in New Yorkg some went on shop- ping tours-window-while others decided to make it entirely a theatre trip and took time during lunch period to visit the new Paramount Theatre. In the afternoon we met at the Maxine Elliot Theatre and Ethel Barrymore graciously and delightfully played the leading part in The Constant Wife. A few were so attracted by the bright lights of Broadway that they could not tear themselves away but stayed in the big city until Sunday morning. Adjectives, adverbs, phrases, everything, nothing can describe our excursion which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who had, the wonderful opportunity of going. , i J QWXVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVZXVAVA W' , Page one hundred and twenty-one Hg, VAVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVAVQ 5 f X 4 4 5 Z S CONTRIBUTORS Miss BENSLER MILDRED SMITH .IEAN SHACKLETTL GLADYS EDWARDS MR. That ought to describe 'it but there is, oh so much more to say. Our present Junior Literary Club is the bright flame of an old glow. A few years ago there was a Junior Literary Society which existed and then did not exist. We, as Juniors, felt our superiority and thus decided to pick up, with the everflowing help of Mr. Bennett, the burnt embers of this society and make it into a glowing torch, now known as the Junior Literary Club. Our work has been extremely interesting. We had our Junior Literary Club business meetings first and then we branched off into three different sections commonly called the Journalistie, Essay and the Reading sections. It was a pleasure to become familiar with authors and the modern fo' iteratur . id have fun with a grand old debate an ie joy r ' ed from forming and intro- ducing our new scl ol paper, is ond description. Our members are now at home at 130 Wall Street, King- ston, N. Y., where a daintily furnished clubroom provides a delight- ful meeting place. After the rushing and pledging of our new members was com- pleted, we turned our attention to the main event of our social season--The Christmas Formal Dance held at the Eagle Hotel in Kingston. This proved very gratifying to us in that it was a scene full of Yule Tide Cheer according to critics, a decidedly enjoyable social enterprise according to our guests, and a financial success according to our treasurer's report. Fearing to lose some of the enjoyments which winter snow pro- vide, we planned to hold a sleigh-ride January twenty-seventh. But the weather man played a prank-and lack of snow, while it allowed us to continue with our plan, nevertheless, made it neces- sary to engage a bus for our ride to the Grange Hall at Lake Katrine where we enjoyed dancing and refreshments. Nu Kappa Sigma although an infant organization, is fostering a sisterly spirit among commuters and it is becoming a strong all to the other school clubs in building a better school spirit. K . The team made a real name for itself, not so much through its victories, for only ten games were won and eleven were lost, but through the work of Lanky Masterson, Mgr. of the team, who obtained a schedule composed of the leading teams in the state. Rusty'f Van Wagenen was elected Captain of the '27 team and with the help of three other letter men, Oakley, Masterson and DuBois built up a team of remarkable strength. Hart, Frumifrcddo, Peterson and L. Bell were added to the first squad while Chipp, Taylor, Mitchell, Gregory, Jensen and I. Bell formed a second team that gave the varsity plenty of stiff opposition. The sportsmanlike conduct of every player on the varsity was amply rewarded, for every team played, expressed their appreciation of t-he square deals given them and the extreme pleasure they ob- tained from playing such a team. A team that receives such com- mcndation is one worthy of any school though they do not win every game. H art-A new player on the N. P. N. team who jumped to the front during the Monroe and Chester games. George is fast on his feet, works hard and is one of the f'noted kids. Starred in Plattsburg game, 11 points. Frumijredrlo-Tlie other Kid,l' and the forward mate of Hart. Together they formed a clever combination with George doing the passwork and Pete making the points. Oakley-Forward or guard. Oak has the ability to make points when needed and is a good defensive man. We rely on Oak, H ' Masterson, fManagcrl-Center player. Lanky far outt- jumped his opponents, and made one of the highest scores. He plays a fast, clean ball and keeps us stepping. Du Bois-A hard-working, standing guard. Completed his third year as varsity guard. Duke saved many a point for us. Van Wagenen, tCaptainl-Guard and forward, finished his basketball career at N. P.
