The fort has the distinction of being the only continental post fired upon since Fort Sumter. During the Spanish- American War a British tramp steamer was coming in with- out her signal flags flying. Mer- chant Marine Academy and in 1931 a new training ship was assigned. The USS PROCYON, renamed the EMPIRE STATE l, was 5,500 gross tons of vessel which provided the school with facilities for enrolling 160 cadets.
