After this the importance of a well- armed garrison at Throgg's Neck was finally realized by the Federal govern- ment for the purpose of protecting the East River approach to New York City. Construction on a fort was started in 1833, eight years later. lt was designed to accommodate a garrison of 1,250 men and to take the shape of an irregular pentagon. lt was built of granite, laboriously hauled from Greenwich, Connecticut. The fort was, upon completion twelve years later, the finest example of the French-type sea-land defense in the United States. Of particular interest are the circular stairways which were constructed purposely to spiral upward to the right so that the defenders would have free use of their right hands while an enemy, if he reached the inside of the fort, would be forced to use his left hand to wield a pistol or sabre. lt was early morning in the rnarzfifsf, 'Va' Separaied ir'r,fq,Qg's lleclf frorr: the 'nai'.a'1 The mist was settled lon ofer the get 'J' lard and the encircling Spend f- aenvf fre' knee-deep in mud. charging his rfle fm' U7 powder, and forcing his tired eyes to yay open. It took its fnrst horse through. . . if you're careful at the cor- hers. lt was the city's first vehicular tunnel, he con- tinued, built around 1862 by Civil War sol- diers working on the old fortress at Totten. Since his discovery back in 1937, the tunnel is rediscovered every few years and revives some lively discussion. WHEN OUESTIONED yesterday about it, Col. Stanley F. Griswold, deputy post commander at the fort, said: lf there is such a tun- nel, it must be a top drawer secret. l don't know a thing about it. But, if l do discover one, l'll let you know immedi- ately. Most of the colonel's predecessors have described the tunnel story as the oldest and most persistent rumor that ever hung over the fort. But with each redis- covery of the Civil War relic, new evidence crops up. NOT LONG AGO, an enlisted man from Flush- ing reported that when he was stationed at Tot- ten during World War I, and it runs under the knoll between the bar- racks andthe old for- tress at the waterfront. It was built so that the .trip back and forth between the two places could be made under cover . . . and out of sight of the enemy. . The fortress end of the tunnel is damp and water-smelling and it was from there that the under-water passage was supposed to lead to Fort Schuyler. 'BOTH FORTS were originally designed to control the inside water approach to the city. Sit- uated at the narrowest part of the Sound, fire from the guns of both could easily have raked the stretch of water bew- teen them. The war ended before the Oueens fortress was finished. No guns were ever mounted there. No Confederate battleship ever sailed between its iron-shuttered portholes and those of its sister fort across the water. The two probably would have been effec- tive in protecting New York from an enemy attack from the Sound in 1865 . . . but they are Four good rounds from enemy ships 40 miles away would surely finish them today. BEFORE 1857, Willets Point was owned by the Willet family and was used as a farm and sum- mer residence. Charles, who gave the point its name as well as that of the highway that leads into the fort itself, is bur- ied just inside the walls. He is said to be the only civilian interred inside a military fortress. Totten was named in honor of Brigadier Gen- eral Joseph G. Totten, an officer in the Engi- neers, who was killed during the battle for Vera Cruz in the war with Mexico. After the Civil War, the fort became the site of Grant General Hospital and assigned there dur- ing that period was Major Walter Reed . . . one of the discoverers of yellow fever and after whom the Washington Army hospital is named. At a later date, Briga- dier General H. S. Abbott, who com- manded the fort, devel- oped a seacoast search- light used in the first illu- mnnated night target test in 1872 and func- tioned perfectly. DURING the 1880s, experiments with the Sims fish torpedo were conducted there. Propelled by electric- ity, the long black torpe- does raced through the water at the incredible speed of ten miles an hour . . . playing havoc with the morale of the local fishermen. Fort Totten's designer was Captain Robert E. Lee, who was later to command the Confeder- ate Armies in the Civil War. But the history books are silent on whether Lee's plans called for a tunnel. Maybe there is a good reason for it. After all, the tunnel was a wartime secret. And the tunnel was a logical answer to the problem of getting men across the Sound. It might even be there . . . and like the ser- geant-major said . . . you can crawl 500 feet through it if you know the entrance. Later, during the Civil War, it was converted to the McDougall General Hospital which was soon afterward destroyed by fire. MAFZYS during the months spent in port at New York: All hands are sharply called at six o'clock in the morning, or four bells, the hammocks are lashed and stowed away, the decks are swept, and at seven o'clock each boy is expected to appear at inspection with a clean face and hands and smoothly brushed hair. Meanwhile the berth-deck is per- vaded with the grateful odor of tea, coffee, mush, and fresh I bread. The galley is for'ard, and the cook is busy with the large simmering coffee kettles that surround him. The portable tables are Ushippedf' which means, in the vernacular of the sea, that they are placed in position, and at half past seven breakfast is served, under the supervision ofthe master-at-arms. The boys in a mess act as its cook in rotation. The incumbent washes all dishes, brings the food from the galley, and apportions it, and if any one is dissatisfied with his own place, he may demand an exchange with the cook. Between eight otclock, when breakfast is finished, and nine, the cooks scour the dishes and tables, while the others clean up the decks, sweeping or holy-stoning them according to the day. At nine the executive officer scrutinizes the mess gear, which is spread out for his inspection, and after a lesson from the Bible has been read, the academic exercises of the day are begun. The recitations and exercises are closed at half past eleven, and recreation is allowed from then until dinner-time, an hour later. The dinner consists of soup, fresh meat, vegie tables, and hard-tack, served not in separate courses, but in one dish. The quality is good, and the quantity ample. From one o'clock until half past one all hands are occupied in clean- ing decks, etc., and at half past one the school exercises are resumed, continuing until four o'clock. A supper of tea or coffee, with fresh bread and butter, is served at tive o'clockg and until nine o'clock, when t'turn in is piped, a few simple duties and recreations occupy the time. The berth-deck is warm and comfortable. There is a piano, which never lacks performers during the hours of recreation, and there is a model printing- press, and a small collection of good secular books. Smoking is not forbidden, some urchins may be seen puffing away at their pipes as though they fully appreciated the charms of the habit. Occasionally a reception is held, the gundeck is cleared, and draped with bunting, a band is hired from thecity, and partners are selected from the invited company of pretty girls. s.9 Xe 4, ,A it .rm is ,Q ,W toy? Though she had full sail power the Newport was also propelled by a single screw triple expansion engine and made 12.29 knots on her trial run. She was a gunboat carrying six 4 inch guns, four six pounders and two one pounders. The Newport was a composite vessel, wood sheathed with copper below the water line, to prevent fouling, with a steel superstructure. After service in the U.S. Navy in various capacities, in 1908 the Newport was loaned to the N.Y.C. Board of Education to replace the St. Marys. ln 1913, she was transferred to the N.Y. State Nautical School. She continued as 13 schoolship until 1931 when she was deactivated at the Puget Sound Navy Yard at Aberdeen, Wash- ington. All during its service as a schoolship the Newport provided practical training for deck and engineering cadets as well as serving as a school building tor theoretical instruction. tu .. 5 1 , qt, . The first because can't get a real good war and settle every- thing. The third because they're discouraged that there is anyfighting at all. The second is a different group, contented, and make up the majority. Contented because they can always justify any war as long as they try hard enough! War If he who has not sinned cast the first stone, not many could and those that could probably wouIdn't. War War is a lie and 'just war' is the biggest lie. Closing I: You may say 'who is he'?' Now. But just wait until I become an unknown. Closing II: Looking back at past Today's all the Memories and love I've had I don't know Why I worry so much About what's gonna Happen, for truly I've Been blessed. Closing We've been hoodwinked Someone said 'good fences make good neighbors' which may or may not be true as they define too unclearly trespass. And now you can see whole cities divided with fences, can even see the streets of someone's neigh- borhood with barricades choked with burned out autos and with piled sandbags objects used to divide the death count - separated, even in the thing we all share. They've done it at last, I saw it yesterday black and ominous. I saw it last night, a glowing warning of reflected darkness. A wall inthe sky. I want to thank my family and my friends from school and from home for the help, guidance, but most of all love they have shown me. I'II remember you and hope you'lI do the same. It was told to me that the Indian believed that as long as a person was remembered a part of his spirit would remain among those left behind . . .Jim Flodnite and Bill Tuthill. May God bless us all 186,000 Closings a second T SEA V' 1 r me N + Fifiiirii ?Fv.pff:f 1: L rx..-f vs ' 3 v vf Q-V, V mum, f.,'L L' 5 . The day goes by so quickly, Tomorrow is so very far away. To be happy for a lifetime. A few moments of happiness gone by so quickly Remembered no matter how far away, In the millennium of a lifetime.
