Each year the staff of the Emprre Forester dedrcates the yearbook to a professor who has been of outstandmg ser v1ce to the college and to h1s or her students Thrs year we would lrke to dedlcate the 1973 Emplre Forester to a pro fessor of s1lv1culture w1th 42 years of expenence and S6l'V1C6 behmd hlm and probably more to come Dr C Eugene Farnsworth began workmg for the College of Forestry rn 1930 at the Ranger School where he taught for 17 years He came to the Syracuse campus 1n 1947 as a Professor of Sxlvrculture and remamed on the actrve faculty untll 1972 when he retlred He now holds the status of professor emerltus Throughout hrs career here Dr Farnsworth has become known as an rnvaluable member of the faculty and an 1IldlSp6I'lSabl8 a1d ln solvlng adm1n1strat1ve problems As Chalrman of the Sllvrculture Department smce 1959 there rs no questron that he has made lt what lt 1S today By demonstratlng the need for new professors and then hmng a competent young faculty rn whom he showed admlrable fa1th he has more than doubled the S128 of the faculty 1n that department He worked hard to develop areas closely all1ed wrth SllVlCS and Sllvrculture thereby wrdenrng the scope of the department and the students Whrle stnvrng to lmprove the Sllvrculture Department Dr Farnsworth taught at one trme or another Just about every course the department offered He has been a maJor professor for between 50 and 60 graduate students and the number of undergraduates he has mfluenced are counted ln the thousands Hrs reputatlon as a problem solver and arbltrator extends far beyond h1s own department He was frequently called upon to calm troubled waters and he As professor ementus Dr Farnsworth now works on short term problems and specral assrgnments It has been our pleasure to dedlcate thrs book to a man of such accomphshment 11 l 7 I ' I l I . , , .
