Chancellor Day's first step began in 1907, with the hiring of Dr. Bray, a botanist, to the S.U. facultY' In 1920, the fight for a state college began in the state senate. Finally on july 28, 1911, the bill establishing the College of Forestry was signed. Dr. Baker became the first regular dean of the college in 1912. The sch00l now consisted of 3 faculty and 52 students. 4 I DEVELOPMENT OF SUNY COLLEGE OF E.S. AND F. The site selected for the first building was just west of a hill called Mount Olympus. Chancellor Day thought the new building should face north, as did most of the buildings on the S.U. campus, while Dean Baker thought it should face west, with later buildings occupying the area south of the stadium. He envisioned a separate forestry campus, with a magnificent view of the Onondaga valley, and the city and hills to the west. On the morning before the college trustees were to inspect the site, Dr. Baker rose early, and with a scythe, personally cleared the site he felt the new building should occupy. Chancellor Day was outwitted for Bray Hall does indeed face west today. Q- 4? - 2 when he ry school, forced t0 3 budget. By some strange act of Mother Nature, the day is always sunny and warm, and the temptation to dive into the lake is almost too great to avoid. The classes compete with high spirits and even our professors get into ll the act. The good vibes are contagious-a day of freedom amid the daily scholastic restrictions. With our l stomachs full of chicken, we relax, soak up sun, play frisbee or find a peaceful spot to walk in to enjoy the beauty of nature. l M il l Q '-.-r N ,, .5-h, :qs ft- .,-.,., 4. .-,, . -r. -V-A-Ks N V-rx. The tradition of the Unbarbeque is only two years old, but it is already firmly established as one of the brighter spots in the winter season. QAPJ-The West Virginia Mountaineers thoroughly thrashed its New York and Pennsylvania foes in the art of woods- men's competition here today. Spastically defending its long-held dom- inance in the field, the SUNY foresters wound up in last place. On the bright side, the meet was one of the best organized in its history, and both visiting schools appreciated the hospitality they received Calthough some New Yorkers felt that losing the meet was being a little too hospitablel. The competition was keen, the weather was great, and the party that night made up for the afternoon's defeat. 51 .FqN ,Q F A . ,fag ..': f W Q Q X55 W x . LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE In preparing qualified practitioners involved with the arrangement of land and facilities for human use and enjoyment, the curriculum concentrates on design and development of an artistic sensitivity in natural resource manipulation that is both aesthetic and utilitarian. Designed for general coverage of the profes- sional field, including a balanced integration of general education, the curriculum also provides a foreign or off-campus study semester which places emphasis on the cultural aspects of the physical environment. Successful completion of four years of work in this program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in En- vironmental Studies, and an additional year fulfills the requirements for a Bachelor's in Landscape Archi- tecture. This field of study is accredited by the American Society of Landscape Architects and is also inter- related with available course work at the School of Ar chitecture at Syracuse University. 68 7 1 ,.-:: s t . . if T T WILLIAM ASTIFAN DAVID BYER5 ROBERT BOGNAR ALBERT CALA T ROBERT BROWN BARRY COLMAN DAl,ECIONKl,lN RICHARD DARIENZO THOMAS DE WITT CLIFFORD DUDA .gy A wif .V. ,571 .3 'G Lg .7 ,- ,- , Q NNW YS 4'1'5LWx vw ,,iefw,,Af: W-'s.'zg5Yi'2,.fy mi? Both options include basic chemistry courses as well as requirements in cellulose chemistry and wood science. By proper elective selection students may be certified on graduation as having completed an Ameri- can Chemical Society approved curriculum in addition to their Bachelor of Science degree. JOHN SOPCHAK ROBERT STARTUP l' nil, The Wood Products Engineering program provides four options leading toward careers in wood science, production systems engineering, materials marketing, and building construction. Through these options the students are prepared for the science, engineering, and managerial aspects of the wood-using industries. After successful completion of their options, the stu- dents can move on to graduate study and research, careers in process de- velopment, technical sales and management, or specialization in the mana- gerial and technical aspects of some wood-related use. 7C ,V 4225 um 7 1' WILLIAM BATZINGER DAVID CAMERON EUDELL BIVENS JOHN CASHMORE LEON BLAUVELT DAVID DEVENDORF ROBERT F. The resources curriculum is one of the most diverse and allows the student to choose one of many very different fields as his or her option. The graduated seniors may find themselves in a field anywhere from management to Silvi- culture to conservation education. More than the gut school of the college, often looked down on by the organic chemistry set, the resource mana- gers of today will probably need to know as much about regression lines and public relations as they do about soils and dendrology. Their goal is to obtain a better working knowledge and understanding of our land resources, 82 atumpyf' different i to silvi- ce mana- out soils ,S f-.1 , IS-wa.f,'0!' FOREST ENGINEERING The objective of this department is to provide students with both an engineering and a foresty background, and to develop an ecological awareness along with engineering com- petence. The program consists of four years at the College of Environmental Science and Forestry, preparatory to a fifth year at Syracuse University. After four years, a Bachelor of Science degree is awarded from the College, and after a fifth year at SU, majoring in engineer- ing, another degree may be awarded. Upon becoming seniors, they have a choice of staying on with the Forest Engineering curriculum or of going into the optional senior year, with a photo- grammetry or geodetic science emphasis. 96 vxwmu PAUL AMIDON STEPHEN FERGUSON MARTY FORKEY HARVEY FREDERICK I XX .,r A 1 X4 , , g e E R, Nl.-XRK ClOl'l.lD WALTER H L' BBELI, 'CQ J' JAMES KAZEL ROBERT KORT TRENT MACKEY LARRY LAMPHIER HARRY NIEDZWIADEK MICHAEL LITTLER ROBERT NOBLE DAVID OSTERHOUT ROY PEDERSEN O O BRUCE REICHEL 5.1 i Q , :S T' T-. - I' X X YQ 'L E 5 Qfzwy 'gig-2' X 1 X X N ' ki xx S 2 if.: L ff? f A 4? This program is a direct outgrowth of the school's foreign study programs from previous years. The program involves the study of topics significant to environmental design in locations chosen to optimize the learning potentials and enhance development of professional skills. It is comprised of multiple study topics in off-campusnlocations, all serving to develop independent thinking in the student. The students, working in small groups, develop their own study program and describe a location in which the study is best engaged. Throughout the pre-semester preparation and during the actual off-campus semester, the student groups work closely with a school faculty advisor. In addition, each group has an on-site consultant. This year twelve groups met in twelve different areas of the world, ranging from Bar Harbor, Maine to Kyoto, japan. Like the rest of the Resource Management curriculum, it will soon be undergoing major changes to up- date the program and to incorporate more field work into its sessions. Emphasis will be placed on those subjects which the student will not be exposed to elsewhere. Those who have attended one of the sessions realize the potential of such a pro- gram, but hope that they can be instrumental in instituting changes in the future. 5 , , , , ! w 1 Y , , . , , , 3 ,M J! 1 'E 4 ip .fn 1 9 ,, 1 Dig' -, 5 ' H 'o F 4 , 1 4 . , H 1 1 3 fwfr ,-T., W, 1 -Qzggxgfzm .Q Q ' X 'Q X. 1 N T' 'Aix mx: Q'Y l!N. 4 V SUMMERTIME, and the living is easy?
