Each edition, through its descrip- tive, artistic and photographic contributions, realistically and delightfully records the personalities and activities of each year. Together the file of the years makes a pleasing history of Rye Country Day School. The Editorial Board and Mr. Warren thereby give great pleasure and render important service to us all. For this they deserve warm appreciation and hearty commendation. E ' RYE,NEMVYORK AN OPEN LETTER TO THE HEADMASTER AND THE FACULTY we, the Class of 1951, will always remember our years at Rye as the good years. Nor will we forget you, our headmaster and teachers, for it is you who have guided us through these years, which you knew would mean so much to us later. Now, as we stand on the threshhold of graduation, we can look both backward and forward. We see that we can never go back, and, although the way ahead is not easy, it is you who have given us the confidence to go on. Perhaps, as the years have passed, we have seemed unaware of what you have done for us. Youth, in its brash confidence, very often is unheeding. But now, our years at Rye seem very precious, and it is you who have made them so. Here at the final reckoning, we can see and appreciate what formerly would have meant little to us. We owe you a debt of thankfulness and affection which can never be wholly paid, and, realizing this, we are more grateful than words can convey. Since we believe that this class is destined to achieve success, we are going to gaze into our crystal ball for a last look at these fated students. At first glance we see Britt Stitt majoring in Home Economics at Peekskill Military Academy and Leigh Gelser, well . . . most of Leigh Gelser, at Exeter. Going farther on we spot Tad Monroe at Harvard, giving 'brush-up' courses in Entomology to the professors, Colin Kagel fiying through the air - in an Air Force jet plane, of course - and jack Laeri telling the recruiting officer he's only fifteen. As the dial is set still farther into the future, around the year 1960, it is evident that the other once ninth graders are engaging in many different occupations. For example, we are able to recognize Harry Miner as a 100,000 dollar-a-year pitcher for the Red Sox and Joe Weed, showing his true lust for adventure, sailing around the world in an automobile tube. After this point we see a great national uprising and inevitable chaos about to result when - Honest Ted Smith is elected President 7 and soon relieves the crisis. A little more adjusting of the dial and we come upon a great era of music - the time when the great composer, Raymond Beadle, wrote his bagpipe concerto in very flat minor. Finally resting the dial at the year 2000 A.D., we gaze upon the most famous classmate of all, George Glendenning. At the moment the great scientist seems to be busy perfecting his rolling stone that gatberr moss, but just two months before, he discovered the theory of time, dimension, and space. By gazing into the crystal ball, we have tried to give you a glimpse into the future of the ninth grade. Of course you realize how absurd this all is. Whoever, in these times, heard of a crystal ball with dials? ff 'vw C. We encourage our students to grow and develop a wide variety of techniques that will result in the feeling of personal growth and successful achieve- ment. Our athletic program not only builds good physical health but makes an important contribution to a good working morale and intelligent citizenship. The athletic environment is such as to liberate and organize their capacities through activities that are dynamic and purposeful. Our athletic program makes an important contribution to the all-around development of personality and the fullness of life which are the results of a sane physical regime that keeps the students' minds eager and alert and their bodies glowing with health. Our students find that the acquirement of new athletic skills leads to pleasant avocations, and the discovery and development of latent athletic abilities lead to a wide range of interests and capacities. Finally, the develop- ment of initiative, resourcefulness, and poise leads to self-mastery, social adjustment, and new friendships. A Q.. son, Joseph Weed. DRAMATICS AT RYE COUNTRY DAY SCHOGL The aims in this department are to give every class as soon as and as often as possible an opportunity to take part in or help with the production of a play, to make full use of the redecorated and improved auditorium, and to sustain a dramatic program of assemblies interesting and of value to the students. The first presentation this school year was given by the boys and girls of the Eighth Grade on Election Day, November seventh. This was an amusing one-act, play entitled Circumstances Alter Cases . The play dealt with the trials and tribulations of a young prep-school son who tries to assume the obligations and responsibilities of his family. Arthur Diedrick played the all-important young man and was ably supported by Sue Duncan, Debby Dammann, and Martin Engs. Three Pills in a Bottle , the delightful fantasy by Rachel Field, was the next per- formance presented by the Fifth Grade boys on january sixteenth. These very young men accredited themselves admirably, not only for handling a play of such scope with delicacy but also for filling feminine roles rather convincingly. Mrs. Phyrne GaNun was in charge of this production, and the program was further enlarged by the reading of Macavity, the Mystery Cat , by three members of the group. Students in the Latin classes of the school ably portrayed the roles in the pageant drama, Dido and Aeneas , as the next feature. The supporting cast was a large one, and the part of Dido was filled by Lee Boardman with Colin Kagel as Aeneas. Emmy Lou Kearney as Juno, Barbara Griffen as Venus, and Tad Monroe as jupiter helped bring to our stage this living interpretation of the story of the legendary founding of Rome. Proper costuming under the supervision of Miss Elsie Resor, scenery and design by Mrs. Dorothy Freiheit and Mr. Louis Wa'.ren, musical counsel by Mr. Ludwig Theis, all combined to make this a most worthwhile dramatic experiment. With the Third, Fourth, and Second Grades rounding out the list of events, topped by the annual and enjoyable Senior Class presentation, the year's dramatic achievements came to successful conclusion. These pupils make up the Legislative Assembly. Each spring they elect two co-presidents, a boy and a girl, to preside the following year. In the fall the home rooms elect their presidents and vice- presidenrs who make up the Student Council. Out of this council are derived three subordinate councils - one for the Boys' Upper School, made up of the boy presidents of grades seven through nineg one for the Girls' Upper School, the girl presidents of grades seven through twelve, and one for the Lower School, the presidents from grades two through six. An elec- ted chairman presides over each of these councils. There is also an executive board consisting of the two co-presidents, the secretary, treasurer and welfare chairman. Under the Student Council are several com- mittees, including the publications' boards tCmp, Oak Leaver, and Ecboj and the Welfare Committee. The Student Governments function is to promote the general welfare of the school and give the students a chance to govern and speak for themselves. When problems concerning student activities and conduct arise, it is the duty of the councils and the legislative assembly to find a solution. The time and effort that we have put into this book have been more than compensated for by the experience we have gained and the pleasure we have had working as a team. We are very grateful to Mr. Warren, our faculty adviser, for his helpful and inspirational guidance. We hope that he has enjoyed work- ing with us as much as we have enjoyed working with him. The faculty has been most co-operative and understanding, and the student body has given us enthusiastic support. We appreciated the ideas and opinions concerning the year book that the students offered us and, because we feel that the Echo should be representative of the entire school and not just the Senior Class, we have tried to include these ideas and opinions whenever possible. Here it is, your 1951 Echo. We hope that you will enjoy it and that in later years it will be a souvenir of a very happy year in your school life. .W. last MH! anh Ilftstamznt T H E S E N I O R C L A S S being of aound and disposing mind and memory, and considering the uncertainty of this life, do make, publish and declare this to be my last and mzstamfut as follows, hereby nevohlng all other former Wills by me at any time made.
