Evolution of the Senior Class Once upon a time, many, many years ago, when the world was still young and everything was much bigger than it is now, we were thirteen sweet little girls. Every day our Mommies took us-beribboned-to kindergarten where we sang about rocks and rills, were read stories about bowls of porridge, a-nd had Rest Hour. By the stone age, however, we could read pretty well, an achievement which greatly aided the digestion of the Bobbrey Train: and The Wizard of Oz. But soon they were kid stuff, and Nancy Drew, Superman, and Donald Duck became our chief fare . . . except, of course, for the more intellectual girls who read Classic Comics. ' Still pigtailed, we wrestled, came home with multi-colored bruises, and jumped rope. CSome of us could never come in the back door J. Hanging from trees, we bemoaned Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, and the fact that we were no longer blessed with tails. I And then, a century or so later, we learned to face life with Portia-and made the marvelous discovery that life is not over for the woman past thirty-five. We also went to dancing school. C'I'he second year, there were even boys to dance with.J When we were twelve, we went to our first formal, and had a little difficulty with our decolletage. At the same time, since Uncle Don had long ago disappeared from the air waves, we galloped over the plains with faithful Tonto at our sides and spent hours paving the way for later high blood pressure with the Shadow and Inner Sanctum. CEditor's note: You see, our genera- tion didn't have televisionj Then, suddenly, around the age of thirteen we changed. Telephones! Pajama Parties! ! Spin the Bottle! ! ! We all had mouths full of metal, and every day at lunch we lost our retainers and had to go into the kitchen to rescue them. Movie stars like Alan Ladd, Dennis Morgan, and Errol Flynn lined our scrapbooks. We sobbed over Bambi and Dumbo. In school, we had posture pictures taken! And, one of us- asked by her father what she had learned in school-replied, When one has three sure tricks in her hand, and her partner has already opened with two no trump, she will arouse that partner's disap- proval if she passes. Then, college catalogues well perused, a new age dawned, we became Seniors and got our driving licenses. The Christmas Dance, perennial social event, inspired diets Cwhich needed no inspiration J. But, in spite of such frivolity, we are much concerned with worldly problems-Cornell, Yale, Taft, and the Brooklyn Dodgers -and shall one day emerge, serious and dignified, into an adult world. I0
