NOR’WESTER SENIORS OF 1965 RUTLAND HIGH SCHOOL RUTLAND, OHIO Presents 1965 marks the fiftieth anniversary of Rutland High School, the same building we are now attending. Previous to this time the high school students were housed in a building on the ground where the elementary school is now located. 2 •-Sift - • . —.? ■ansi Rutland High School, particularly considering its size, has had many graduates who have become very successful in their various careers. We hope that the graduates of 1965 and all graduates in the future years to come will continue in this tradition. 3 RESPECTFULLY WE THE SENIORS OF 1965 DEDICATE THE NOR’WESTER TO CALVIN ANDREW SPROUSE Qi October 28, 1964, we were all shocked at the tragic automobile accident that took the life of Andy Sprouse. Do you know what it is to work and play with a person five days a week for three years, and then one day have someone tell you that he has been taken away from you? Well, we at Rut- land High School do. Andy was our friend. He was the kind of person who was quiet, but not a hermit; noisy, but not unruly. He would do anything to get a good clean laugh. When you walked into a classroom, you could always tell if Andy were present. Andy, who was such a handsome boy with his sparkling eyes and alert face, would never walk down the halls again. Andy, who was an active member of the Methodist Church, only this summer did much of the painting and repair work at the parsonage. Andy, who would have been 17 years old November 16, would never get to march across the stage at commencement. Andy, who was one of the best liked seniors by both faculty and students, would not start basketball practice on Monday. Andy, who really enjoyed life, will charm no more people with his engaging smile. Andy, who was one of the most enthusiastic members of the Yearbook Staff, will never see the finished publication for which he had worked so hard. 5 IN MEMORY OF Floyd Rumfield During the past summer all students of Rutland and students of prior years were extremely saddened to learn of the sudden death of Floyd Rumfield. Red, as he was affectionately known by hundreds of students, was liked and respected by all. He had been custodian at Rutland Elementary School for fourteen years. He was far more than most janitors, as he was usually the first one called in case of any accident. He was also the person to whom everyone ran when anything needed to be fixed. Everyone who has been connected with any of the Rutland schools for any number of years, now misses the familiar sight of Red and his dog, Sport, at the Rutland Elementary School. 6 ADMINISTRA TION donald McKenzie This is Mr. McKenzie's first year as executive head of the Northwestern District. Mr. McKenzie received his B.S. degree from Ohio University and his M.A. from Marshall University. He has taken quite a bit of work beyond the Master's degree in school ad- ministration. Prior to his coming to Rutland he was assistant principal at Wahama High School for ten years. 8 JAMES VENNARI Miss Linda Haley came to Rutland High School at mid- semester 1961. Linda is an efficient office worker and is a graduate of the class of 1960 of Rutland High School. Mr. Vennari did his undergraduate work at Salem College where he majored in physical education and social studies. He graduated in 1936. He received his master's degree from West Vir- ginia University in 1961. In 1946 Mr. Vennari came to Rut- land and compiled one of the best football records in Southeastern Ohio. His record as coach at Rutland was; 96 wins, 26 losses, and.7 ties. Mr. Vennari's overall record shows 145 wins, 32 losses, and 8 ties. He was class A coach of the year in the state of Ohio in 1958. He was coach of the year in the Buckeye League in 1959. Mr. Vennari assumed the prin- cipal's job in 1962. The Nor'Wester Staff has worked very hard this year to try to make this a good yearbook. The senior class this year obtained more in advertise- ments than in any previous year. They have all cooperated well and have seemed to enjoy their work. Tom Hysell and Suzy Parker are co-editors of this book. Miss Kraeuter and Miss Chapman are the faculty sponsors of the book. The staff hopes that through the years this book will revive many mem- ories of the years spent at Rutland High School. 34 'Landslide Lyndon’ RUTLAND HIGH SCHOOL President and Vice-Presi- dent Lyndon Johnson and Hubert Humphrey-- Barry Goldwater and William Miller United States Senator Stephen Young Robert Taft, Jr. Representative to Congres. Suzy Parker acts as mediator. But what about in your head, where it counts? asks Tom Hysell. On November 3, 1964, the first Tuesday after the first Monday in No- vember of 1964, a mock election was staged at Rutland High School. In the weeks before the election, posters and pictures of the candidates appeared in the halls and homerooms. On November 2, the football field was the scene of an election rally. A very large crowd was on hand to hear the speeches and songs and to cheer and support the can- didates. Suzy Parker introduced Tom Hysell and Larry Rupe, who gave rousing campaign speeches for the Democrats and Republicans. ELECTION RETURNS 200 The election was planned so that it would be as nearly like an official 78 election as possible. Since this was a project of the American govern- ment classes, government students acted as election officials. The voters registered at the door of the precinct, and then, each voter was given a numbered ballot, which was marked in the private booths. 139 Next, it was taken to the ballot box, where the officials removed the 127 stub, and placed the stub and the ballot in their respective boxes. 178 91 What's the matter, Jim? OUR PROM AND BANQUET MEIGS COUNTY JUNIOR MISS 1965 54 RUTLAND SENIOR IS CROWNED MEIGS COUNTY JUNIOR MISS OF 1965 Two Rutland seniors, Julia Lucas and Suzy Parker, entered the second Meigs County Junior Miss Contest held in Middleport on December 28, competing with eighteen girls from three other schools in the county. The contestants were judged on the basis of scholarship, youth fitness, mental alert- ness, creative and performing arts, and poise and appearance. Suzy Parker was crowned Meigs County's Junior Miss of 1965 by reigning Junior Miss, Janice Tannehill of Middleport. Suzy was presented a crown, trophy, bouquet of roses, camera, a $200 scholarship, and an all-expense-paid trip to the State finals in Xenia, Ohio. She spent a very exciting week in Xenia, where she attended rehears- als, banquets, and luncheons for the con- testants. She also received the key to the city from the mayor and competed for the title of Ohio Junior Miss, which was won by Knox County's Junior Miss, Jane Pilotti. The purpose of the Junior Miss Contest is to discover the nation's ideal and outstand- ing senior girls to reward them, and to en- courage them to further their ambitions by granting scholarships to these deserving young ladies.
