Sophomore Class There are a total of 73 students in the sophomore class; 35 girls and 38 boys. Over half of these came from the Rutland Grade School, while the remainder was divided between Salem Center and Harrisonville Grade Schools. We also welcomed several from other schools far and near. We began our academic career in 1952, grasping the fundamental tools which were to guide our work evermore. And so, we leave the unwritten pages of our history to unfold, hoping to make our footsteps those to be followed by our posterity. - 27 - “L G. $ freshmen ?9 freshman Qirls FIRST ROW: Joy Arix, Charlotte Rupe, Connie Saxton, Saundra Dean, Cheryl Williams, Linda Lathey, Linda Hysell, Margie Herring, Sue Anderson. The Spyglass staff works very hard at the end of the six weeks, in order to publish a paper that will be interesting to its readers. The students of Rutland High School should be very proud of the glass. We should commend the Secretarial Practice Class for their effort in typing and Miss Ohlinger for her wonderful supervision. They work hard to publish an interesting paper. This year's editor Pat Mace, is doing a splendid job. Cooperation is perhaps the most important requirement for student interested in working on the Spyglass . The members of the Secretarial Practice Class profit from the experience they gain while editing, typing, ing the paper. any greatly and mimeograph - 50 - Student Council FIRST ROW: Nancy Pope, Linda Lathey, Latischia Gates, Tana Long, SECOND ROW: Bobby Pope, Joe Chapman, George White, Larry Haynes, Harold Sauer. The students of Rutland High School, in order to provide for tudent participation in school government, to establish better nderstanding between faculty and students, to afford training n citizenship, and to insure a sincere respect for law and order, ave organized and established a student council. The first stu- ent council was elected in the fall of 1958. Each council since hat time has justified the faith placed in it. This year's council is sponsoring a paperback bookstore with he hope that the student body will develop a greater interest in eading, especially reading the best in literature. Already much nthusiasm is being shown for the venture. It is being counted a uccess. Another project of the council is a handbook for both students nd faculty. This is an undertaking long considered and for which Hiere is a real need. The handbook committee is hard at work. f Student council is responsible for assembly and chapel pro- _rams. Educational films are shown for the benefit of the entire ♦tudent body, largely dealing with vocational information. |napel services are reserved for the religious holidays with em- phasis placed upon reverence, dignity, and quality of the best Hent available. The council is also sponsor of the all-school party which 5 an annual affair designed to help each student have his own peck of fun . This year, as in past years, Mr. and Mrs. John i’dy have provided the backbone of the entertainment. They will 5 greatly missed in the future as they have moved to the Bahama Slands. - 51 - A Safety Club FIRST ROW: Sharon Quillen, Roseanna Goff, Sue Anderson, Joetta Erlewine, Mary Crouser Martha Hawkins, Barbara Carter, Gloria Fetty. This was undesirable since it was impossible to control the library books at all hours. The loss rate was high—too high. This summer, however, the south third of the main study hall was partitioned, with built-in bookcases acting as the partition. One new door was put in from the old study hall. The southernmost door leading into the hall was retained. With part-time teacher supervision and several student librarians much better control is kept on the books. As to the books themselves, about one hundred new volumes will have been added by the end of this school year. These consist of several dictionaries, including a new Webster’s International, a new set of World Book Encyclopedias, two biographical reference works, with the remainder consisting of novels, biography, travel, science, and geography. In addition, we have the loan of 150 books from the State Library. These books have been used very much, since they are mostly newer books. - 59 - Juture Momemakers Of America FIRST ROW: Shirley Dugan, Marvel Foley, Cheryl Searles, Brenda Turner, Alice Crouser, Judy Williams, Sharon Haley. Students must have a B average at least and besides scholarship are selected on basis of character, leadership, citizenship, and service. Membership in this organization is quite limited and not more than ten percent of a class may belong.
