STANDING: Betty Janey. The library at Rutland H.S. has been greatly improved in the last two years. During this period we have secured new tables and chairs which make the library a much more enjoyable place in which to work. This year we secured 150 books from the State Library in Columbus. These books are largely fiction, but contain a few scientific subjects and biographies. These books have been read very well by the students, and it is hoped that next year an additional group can be procured. We hope that we can keep building up our library and improving it each year. Mr. Ira Wolfe, English teacher, is in charge of the library this year. He is assisted by the above girls. Each of these girls work, one period a day. The traditional All School Party, February 24, 1961, sponsored by the Student Council and under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. John Hardy was a gala affair. It is the one time of the year when the faculty are allowed to forget their age and be young again. No one is allowed to remain a wall flower. All enter into the fun. JUNIOR PLAY 1961 CAST Mr. Morlock--James Sheets Mrs. Morlock--Jane Parsons Mary--Betty Morris Jessica--Martha Brewer Mildred--Juanuiata Tackett Joe Lanconi --Paul Pierce Luiga Lanconi --Junior Carter Martha--Dott Smith Jessica--a bundle of action and energy, doing her push-ups. She aspires to be a champion wrestler. The Junior Play was presented in April of 1961. The theme of the play was based on the hilarious dream of Mr. Morlock, played by Jim Sheets. His family and his friends took part in the three act comedy and helped to make it a success. Everyone enjoyed the play very much. CAST Lucifer --Dick Dugan Miss Akers--June Tillis George Plew--David Wiseman Mrs. Schmaltz --Sandra Little Dr. Brown--David Pierce Mr. Black--Hiram Slawter Jake--Larry Parsons Mrs. Frinick--Connie Lewis Luigi warns Mr. Morlock about what will happen if he doesn't do as he wishes. Mr. Morlock turns these warnings into a hilarious dream. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Left to Right, SEATED--Miss Chapman, Jane Crisp, Connie Lewis, and Martha Brewer. STANDING--Phyllis Howard, Judy Lee, Marlene Hoffman, and Joe Chapman. The National Honor Society has very limited membership. Students must have at least an accumulative average of B. In addition, these students must be good school citizens and be outstanding in school service. Fifteen per cent of the Senior Class and five per cent of the Junior Class are eligible for membership in this Society. At the present time we have eight active members and will elect some new members in the Spring. The NHS has had as a project the selling of Red Devil Paper. The aim of the club is to buy books for the library with the proceeds from their sale. 49 ’’THIS IS YOUR LIFE. MRS. C. O. CHAPMAN” We would like to salute a great lady of the teaching profession--our own beloved Mrs. C. O. Chapman. Over ZOO persons turned out to honor her at a This Is Your Life type program during the February meeting of the Rutland P. T. A. Mrs. Chapman’s high ideal and standards make both teachers and pupils reach up to her level. Her deep interest in all of her students, her untiring efforts to teach and assist them with their music, and the many hours of labor spent in rehearsals have proven that she is truly a dedicated teacher. She is known throughout this area for her outstanding musical productions. We consider ourselves very fortunate to have had such a capable and lovely lady to supervise our vocal music for the past forty years, and we hope to have her many more. To Know Her Is To Love Her. There’s a red, red rose in Rutland That we have come to see, She has worked here many years, To teach do, re, mi. Her musical productions Are wonderful to hear, And so we sing praises, Of Mrs. Chapman dear. DIRECTING FORMER STUDENTS. LISTENING TO PRESENT STUDENTS A GIFT OF LUGGAGE! GIFTS FROM THE TEACHERS. CLASS PROPHECY We have traveled the country for many a year, We thought about our classmates and how they appear, We wondered if any had won great fame, So back to good old Rutland we came. First of all to mention a name, Into our minds Miss Jane Crisp came, Miss Jane Crisp, Lulu herself, Is Mrs. Cremeans in all her wealth. Sammy Birchfield another classmate, Is now selling pens for Papermate, He also owns a laundry mat, A fleecy dog and a Siamese cat. Lee Combs who lives so far, Happens to be a football star, He made the famous all-star reveiw, We are proud of him, now aren't you? And now we see Anna Erenfels, As executive head of Elberfelds, She works with patience and with time, So that her profits will climb and climb. Roberta Grate who is a very good cook, Is now publishing her own recipe book, We advise you all to buy, There are some recipes you ought to try. Thomas Jackson the famous jockey, Is now racing horses in Milwaukee, With good riding and good speed, His horse will surely be in the lead. Larry Parsons the dear old chap, Who said for girls he didn't give a rap, And yet you'll find to this day, Out to Turners raking Hay. David Pierce who we admire so well, Is a fine young coach, coaching at Yale, He comes to Rutland every fall, To see if Rutland is still on the ball. Famous comedian Sandra Little, Lost twenty pounds around the middle, Slim and trim as she may be. She has her own show on T.V. Rutland's new banker is Betty Morris, If your money is there you're on the right course, And you are sure to recognize, her same old style, For there she will greet you with a smile. Jim Sheets is a doctor as you may know, He can operate youi littliest toe, In case he would happen to make a slip, He could fix it with just a whip. Hiram Slawter as honest as can be, Charges people a minimum fee, For riding on his very big boat. It's a shame that it doesn't float. Darrell and Laurence Smith farmers are they, They make their living working in the hay. Until one day Darrell got caught in the baler. And now he is a mighty fine sailor. And now classmate Ronald Hanning, Is making his living, doing painting. Green, red, whatever you choose. With Ronald's painting you could never lose. Tom Spaulding a barber is he. He will cut your hair for a reasonable fee. But watch your sideburns, whiskers and such, For he has a tendency to cut too much. Louise Higgonbotham is back to stay, From her trip across the way, She has spent the last few years, With happiness and good cheers. And now we find that Junior Rife, Has married himself a mighty fine wife, She drives him to work most every day, But most of all, when he gets his pay. An airline hostess is Phyllis Howard, She proved to us she was no coward, Until one day something went boom, She is now working, pushing a broom. You are sure to remember Miss Crella Priddy, She went to work in a very large city, She is an agent for the F. B. I. And on her first case she got the wrong guy. Sisson and Haggy are known the world around, They started singing in this old town, Now for themselves they have made a name, They wasted no time in gaining their fame. John Warner has money galore, He now runs hiw own department store, The rest of his life in Rutland he'll spend, If you need money we're sure he'll lend. The tennis player, Johnney Tackett, While playing fell over her racket. She skinned her knee and broke her arm, And now she is back home on the farm. Now a classmate from our region, Went to join the foreign legion, Andrew Chapman is his name, And we wish him wealth and fame. Margaret Williamson use to work in the hay, But now she has been elected Miss U. S. A. With the lights and glory, and all her fame, Everybody will remember Margaret's name. Now we hear from Miss Ann Sprouse, That she is married to a mighty fine spouse, He is tall and handsome too, And he is wearing Air Force Blue. Do you remember Helena Moore, She went and bought a grocery store, We hear that she is doing well, We're glad for Helena, cause she's just swell. The famous novelist Betty Janey, Has written a novel called Alleghaney. We hope this book is a good seller too-- For we know she's admired by all of you. Roger Riggs an Air Force Mechanic. Works on a carrier in the Atlantic. He started out working on his own car, And now he has gone very far. 69 This country gal, who is Donna Weaver, Is a secretary, as busy as a beaver, She takes dictation like a stenog. Instead of sitting around like a bump on a log. Clarence Lambert is now traveling in Spain, As the climate here affected his brain. He put his clothes in a very small bundle, Because he's headed for the African Jungle. Joe Stafford worked at Kaiser Alum-i-num. Until he lost his chewing gum. It hot mixed with the Kaiser foil, And now he's busy plowing soil. Alan King an ex-marine, Now is sporting a limousine, Three flat tires and one back door, Give him time and he'll add some more. We are glad to hear from Bill Hayes, Whom we haven't seen for many days, He owns an airport and a plane, And lives in a town in Maine. Now Paul Pierce who is a printer, Mistook a type for a splinter, The press was damaged and the paper was torn, Now Paul is wearing clothes that are worn. Now here is Mrs. Janice Paige, When she cooked she never used sage. But now she has learned that sugar and spice, has made her husband very nice. Another classmate who has made his fame, Is Waid Nelson for catching big game. He went to Africa and India too. He brought back three white mice for the zoo. On the street do you know who we saw ? Miss May Lee Edwards who is studying law. All the classes that she has tried, The jury hung them and put them aside. Now here is Ann Ellis, who is a professor. She, as we know, is a very snappy dresser. She rides to school in a little go cart, Cause she can't get, Sam her old mule, to start. Richard Dugan, whom we all know, Is operating an astro-base on Pluto. He sits day and night in a little glass case, We know he's lonely, because its a one man base. Viola McKnight, a waitress is she, She is very busy as we can see. Washing dishes from night to dawn, Starting another day with a great big yawn Dott Smith with a high ambition, We find that she is a wishn', To be teacher so that she, Can teach the children their a, b, c's. And now remember Darrell Keys. He is now working at royal McBee's. Then one day the printer slipped, And now he has his fingers clipped. And Junior and Martha as we did hear, Would surely have been married in another year, But along came her Maw as we did fear, And said, No never not this year. Judy Lee a brown-eyed lass, Went overseas and lost her pass. We haven't seen her so we guess she's still there, It sure is lonely to see her empty chair. We have been here to tell you a story, Of all we seniors in our glory. So whatever the future for you may be, It might be in this future prophecy.
