I t THE I WESTERNER Published by THE SENIOR CLASS RUTLAND HIGH SCHOOL Rutland, Ohio 19 55 Dedication We publish this year book in the memory of Roger Dean Miller, whom we all loved and miss very much. His death, an accidental electrocution, was a shock to all who knew and loved him. His passing brought to us the recollection of his cheerful smile and happy laughter. He could make the roughest situations a little easier just by his presence. Roger always enjoyed himself, whether at a Sock Hop or in Physics class tampering with a radio. He could tease you and you didn’t mind. He could flunk a test and you felt bad, really bad, just for him. He played football, was in plays, sang a good baritone, and was mak- ing payments on a used car. A typical boy but yet a little special, it seemed. We publish this book as a tribute to his memory and to his friend- ship which shall live on in our hearts. But after the last whistle was blown, and the season had ended, we had won four, tied one, and lost three by the extra point rule. This proves the amount of determination, spirit and co-operation shown by the squad all through the season. One sports writer remarked to Coach Vennari, “I never saw a football team do so much scrapping for a coach. With such fine spirit from the squad and the student body, we hope to win a few more next year. As you know, at the end of every season all the coaches of the S. E. O. League select boys from all S. E. O. teams. However, the coaches cannot vote for their own boys. We’re quite proud of our boys who made the S. E. O. team. They were: Captain Fussell Carson, offensive center, (elected by unanimous choice); Charles Stewart, defensive guard; Jim Cremeans, defensive back; and Pat Eads, offensive end. John Montgomery, end, just missed making the S. E. O. team by one vote. Our reserve team won only one game but you couldn’t beat them in spirit and deter- mination--the number one requisite for success in the future. We’re really going to miss Fussell Carson and John Montgomery who are seniors this year. They truly and sincerely gave their all for the good of the team. We hope the boys next year will follow their example. FOOTBALL SCORES Rutland 28 Chester 0 Rutland 34.... McArthur 53 Rutland 19.... Lakin 6 Rutland 18.... Belpre 20 Rutland 19.... ...J. Basketball in Retrospect The Rutland basketball squad opened practice November 21. Three mem- bers of last year’s varsity were back including high scoring Jim Cremeans. But the team lacked height and as a result the opposition usually controlled the backboards. The Red Devils developed a fast break which worked very well, but it was not enough and the Red Devils managed t6 win onlv three games. The varsity consisted of the following players: John Montgomery at center, Don Harrison and Jim Cremeans at forwards, Harold Carson and Jerry Schoonover at guards with Kenny Hysell and Walter Hysell seeing a lot of action. The only players to graduate from this year’s squad are John Montgomery and Walter Hysell. The reserves also had a losing season, but nearly all of their games were close, hard-fought games which were not decided until the last minute. In the drawings for the Meigs County Tournament to begin February 14, the varsity drew Chester and the reserves drew Harr isonville. Racine........ Harr isonville . Chester . . . . Wahama .... We, the seniors, in ZZ parts present this last will and testament. The in- dividuals bequests are as follows: Ivan Halliday leaves his worries and sleepless nights over lessons to Jim Dyer and Don Harrison. Francis Moran leaves his beauty naps to Fred Hager and Lucy Turner. John Montgomery wills six inches of his skyscraping height to Rose Kess- inger and Jo Ann Carter. Russell Carson wills his curly hair to Bud Carroll and Paul Nelson. Alberta Snowden wills her ability to write shorthand to Alta Clonch and Edna Stanley. Owen Hoffman wills his contagious laughter to Joe Bolin and Larry Pickens who need a new sense of humor to take the place of those warped ones. Jim Nelson wills his technique of pestering Miss Lloyd to Weldon Bartrum. Phyllis Williams leaves her quiet but effective ways to Janet Turner and Marilyn Hampton. Fauna Bailey leaves her driver’s license to Jean Edwards and Bob Searles. Jenea Hayes wills her ability to flirt with all the handsome boys to Sue Mullins. Norma Holliday wills her ability to type to Charles Snrvith and Bessie Ellis. Walter Hysell leaves his place in English class to Leo Morris--that is, if he can keep awake. Betty Nichols wills her short hair to Lynn Bartrum and Sandra Pierce who look very nice the way they are. Jack Perry leaves his cigar stubs to Bill Brewer and Don Branham. Annabelle Priddy wills her love troubles to Joyce Branham. Mary Rich leaves her ability to be tardy to Jim Hobbs. Paul Shoemaker wills his ability to tell corny jokes to Charles Stewart and Earl Stevens. Marilyn Turner wills her ability to sing to Edna German and Arietta Cross. Dorothy Warner leaves her tidy locker to anyone who can open the door and dodge the flow of books. Donna Will and Bill Riffe might do. Kathleen Clonch leaves her jolly good times in school to Judy Stewart and Harold Carson. Lloyd Smith leaves his shyness to Tom Turner and Linda Buck. Jack Bolen wills his study habits to anyone who can get accustomed to them. Bob Pierce and Gene Schoonover will do. To the Sophomores we leave our pleasing ways. To the Freshmen we leave the hope that they will become Seniors. Lastly: We nominate, constitute, and appoint our beloved faculty to be the executors of this, our last will and testament. In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hand and affixed our seal this twentieth day of May in the year one thousand nine hundred and fifty-five. Kathleen Clonch, Norma Holliday, Dorothy Warner 51 Class Prophecy As I planned to embark for Europe last may, i thought ot tne progress that 1 had made in the last ten years and I wondered how the other graduates of the Class of 1955 had fared. Getting our passports, my personal manager, Fauna Bailey, and I were going on a concert tour around the world. Fauna has been my companion and manager since the Metropolitan contract was signed five years ago. Before sailing, we had to bid farewell to another classmate who had entered the entertainment world. He is known as the red-haired Casanova of the Keyboard --Fed Carsonace. After gradua- tion, he had taken lessons from the master, Liberace himself, and has excelled even him. Financial boners all were notified, for these tours are expensive. We are particularly lucky in having some good friends in the industrial world. Francis Moran is now the President of the Beautyrest Mattress Co. and we hear he’s his own best customer. James Nelson is chief stock- holder at Wrigley's. Jim told us that he bought so much Spearmint, it was about to “break him up , so he decided to buy the company. Some telephone calls also slowed our schedule. I called Dorothy Warner, chief hairdresser at MGM, to fly at once to New York and fix our hair. Also, I called Churchill Downs in Kentucky, to wish Lloyd Smith luck in the Derby. He is the leading jockey in the country and is riding Son of Native Dancer this year. After boarding the Queen Mary, we decided to go into the lounge. Following a delightful dinner, we were surprised to recognize the faces of two classmates in the chorus line. Sure enough, there were Jenea Hayes and Annabelle Priddy, kicking to their hearts content. Talking to them later, we found they also have their own act and are scheduled for a screen test shortly. Docking in London harbor, we toured London. Upon arriving at the Palladium, we were startled to see outside a huge picture of Owen Hoffman, comedian extraordinare, who has taken England by storm with his ready wit and timely humor. Lunching with him the next day, we found that his success had been a surprise to him as well as the rest ofc us. “I just act natural,” he said. Also, he and Fauna renewed old friendships. After persuading Funa to leave London and Owen, we opened in Paris. The crowds were sparse and we wondered why. After investigation, we found that the Ringling Bros. Circus was appearing on the next block and everyone was clamoring to see the glamorous Mary Rice, Queen of the Trapezes, who is the Ringling Bros. star. Berlin was more successful, and while taking the last bow, I peered up to the balcony. There a familiar face caught my eye. Motioning her backstage, I planned to find our why Kathleen Clonch was in Germany. She told me she is working for the Secret Service and can’t reveal her mission. Rome was a cinch and while there, Fauna and I enrolled in the Sonny Hysell School of the Dance. Sonny told us he has a chain of schools throughout Europe and may bring some to America. While in Spain, we were awakened one morning with shouts of “Viva la Montgomery, Viva la Montgomery.” Looking sleepily out of the window, we saw placards being carried with the picture of John Montgomery on them. Asking a bellboy, we found that Johnny has introduced the game of football in Spain and is now coaching players in that sport. We hear it’s taking the place of bull- fighting. While in Australia, we contracted a rare stomach disorder and we telegraphed to America for Betty Nichols to come at once. She is the leading dietician in the United States and, believe me, her services were really needed Also, in Australia, we ran into Paul Shoemaker who trains kangaroos for American circuses. He says they really keep him hopping. While boarding a train in Manila, Phillipines, we saw some trunks being loaded with big red letters declaring “Jacque Boleni. Magician”. Wondering if it could be the same Jack Bolen we knew, we waited; and sure enough, there was Jack, as big and handsome as ever. He informed us that he is doing quite well on a tour of Europe and Asia, In the Phillipines, we also found General Ivan Halliday who is in charge of the Allied Forces there; also, Captain Phyllis Williams who is top test pilot for the Air Force. After getting her driver’s license, she decided to try for pilot's license and is the first woman to fly non-stop around the world. Back into the Western Hemisphere we flew, and stopping in California, we found our finances in an awful condition. We wired Norma Holliday, who is President of Rathburn's Bank, to send us money from our savings account. While in California, we found Jack Perry who is the chief buyer of tobacco for a leading cigar manufacturer. Gosh, that made all of the class except our worthy President, and--oh, yes, she is the Secretary to President Adlai Stevenson. We were happy to hear that another member of our class had risen so far, Alberta Snowden. With happy memories, we returned home and pondered over the success of that glorious class, the class of ‘55. 52 Marilyn Turner, Fauna Bailey, Phyllis Williams AUTOGRAPHS v e Co' e e , Class Motto Less Than Our Best Is Failure Compliments Of Lamborn's Glouster, Ohio Compliments Of Herff-Jones Baker Furniture “On The Brightest Corner In Middleport Bailey s Drive-In T-Bone Steaks Chicken In The Basket Shrimp Basket Compliments Of The Hut Mr. and Mrs. Ray Markins Rutland, Ohio May Your Dreams Come True Blaettnar Auto Co.
