In Memoriam 2 HOWARD STRONG (1933-1953) In Remembrance We publish this yearbook in the memory of Howard Strong whose young life was taken by the dreaded disease, poliomyelitis, on August 3, 1953. Howard was a member of the class of lhSl but we, of the class of 1954, remember him well. Ctir memory of him is so vivid because of his cheerful and pleasant manner. Haward, a friend of all, was an outstanding student and was always willing to participate in all school activities. When we leaf through this book many times, in later years, we shall be reminded of him. We shall recall the brief but splendid life of a beloved schoolmate. The Senior Class 3 Our Custodians MR. The SPYGLASS is a mimeographed newspaper. Articles, of course, are submitted by students from all classes, but the mimeographing is done by the commercial department. The SPYGLASS always lets us know what's coming next six-weeks, gives us a roundup of the sports and has a section devoted to Small Talk. Although we are not too eager to get our grade cards, we are always glad when the day comes because the SPYGLASS is published on that day. Miss Chlinger is the faculty advisor to the SPYGLASS Staff. 1953 To 1954 Staff Editor.....................Barbara Delaney Assistant Editor......................Donna Bolen Society Editor................ This season, though, for fifteen boys it was as alive as ever — the fifteen who made up the 1953 football squad. There were five seniors, three juniors, two sophomores and five freshmen on the squad. Two of these freshmen were on the first eleven. These boys had as much spirit as any coach should expect of his players and this spirit made the team stronger as the season progressed. Rutland has been an old single wing team and that was the offense that the Red Devils began with until it was discovered that the system had to fit the boys. When this formation started to fold, new offenses were introduced. Finally we started clicking after using a combination of offenses and defenses. Instead of setting up plays from one formation, which, incidentally, isn’t too difficult to detect, we set up plays by changing offenses. This confused the opposition. Even when we outclassed our opponents with football, we lacked experience that is a prerequisite of a good team; therefore, we were overpowered by older and more experienced boys. However, we never lost our spirit and sell respect and finally the experience that we had been getting from larger teams started paying off. In our fifth game (with Middleport), we outclassed them all evening and almost pulled it out of the fire but the two platoon system finally wore us down and we came out on the short end of a 32-6 score. Next we invaded Belpre--home of the Golden Eagles. Again we pushed their five - five man squad all over the field until bruises and sheer exhaustion overcame us and they walloped us 32-6 after our leading at halftime 13-6. We were still full of spirit and intestinal fortitude when we invaded Wahama on November 20. We outsmarted them at signal calling all evening. TomFauber and JimCremeans called signals together. We led Wahama 6-0 at the first turn, but at halftime we were behind 6-7. Then our quarterbacks went to work and made Wahama’s strongest offense-- passes-- blow up in their faces. Jim Cremeans and Tom Fauber alternated at passing and gained 279 yards in their efforts. We completed 17 of 33. Besides their throwing, they were catching each other’s passes. CXir line looked exceptionally good but again we were outmanned and out experienced. After being in scoring territory three times and not making it, we settled with a 14-13 loss. CXir last game was our best! For the first time we played a team that was our size — Hannan High, of W. Va. With good quarterbacking and playing close to our belts, we overpowered our opponents 39-0. (We were not making any mistakes that night.) CXitstanding linemen for the season were: Larry Turner at right end and halfback, Don visher at right guard and Don Harrison at left end and halfback. CXitstanding backs were: Monroe Oliver and Tom Fauber alternating at fullback and quarterback. Both of these boys were our work horses. They had powerful legs and gained a lot of ground. CXir most promising player was our freshman, Jim Cremeans, who could pass, kick, punt, kickoff and in one instance sold tickets before the game. An asset to any team is a good utility man. We had him--Bud Carroll. He played center, both guards, tackles and ends. He knew the assignments at all seven posts. The most improved player who also has the best personality and strongest heart is Russell Carson. Russell played regular center all season. He always did his work and never complained. He is well liked by his teammates and coaches as well. 34 Although the Rutland Red Devils won but two games--the first and last-- over Chester 12-7 and Hannan 39-0, and lost seven games, in between, Rutland should be very proud of the few who represented Rutland High School. They are outstanding boys off the field as well as on— gentlemen in every respect and feared on the gridiron by their foe. Jim Cremeans 35 Basketball The Rutland Red Devils opened the 1953 basketball season with eighteen freshmen, three seniors, and one junior. The freshmen dominated the playing, which pitted a very inexperienced squad against strong foes such as Tuppers Plains, Racine, Chauncy, Belpre, The Plains and McArthur. Outstanding performers were: Don King, a center, John Montgomery at forward, Larry Turner at forward, Jimmy Cremeans and Jerry Schoonover at guards. Superior in scoring was Jimmy Cremeans who averaged twenty or more per game. Against superior foes, Jimmy excelled in floor play as well as in scoring. The Red Devils have won but two games, these coming from the Alumni (62-61) and Hannan High (62-23), a very weak opponent who has no gymnasium in which to practice. The teams to which we fell victim were as follows: Racine 28-87 T. P. 31-101 Chester 38-75 Wahama 38-65 Harr isonville 61-76 Harrisonville 50-80 T.
