Seven hundred and thirty five Iowa high school baseball teams started down the tournament trail toward Mason City in the Spring of 1951, but only 8 reach ed those coveted final berths Riding the crest of a dazzling ll game winning steark, Ruthven's Rams reached this select group for the first time in the his tory of the school Starting slow against weaker opposition, the team picked up rapidly and by tournament time was in high gear The sectional tournament provided little com petition for the Rams, and behind excellent pitching defeated Ayrshire l2 to O and in the finals, Lake Center, lO to O Advancing to the district, the team continued to hold the opposition score less, defeating Brooke, lO to O, and Webb, I3 to O From here on, however, the going was much rougher The Rams were pitted against Heelan High of Souix City in the first round of the Sub State held at Quimby We got off to a good start, but Heelan came right back and then went into the lead However, Ruthven was not to be denied and when the final out was made, we had won, h to 3 Qulmby and Ruthven faced each other in the finals Again the Rams gpt off to a good start, but again they lost their lead and in the fifth inning were trailing, 5 to M. With Gene Brady on first and two out, Don Brown smashed a home run to break the game wide open. The final score was 9 to S, giving the Rams the right to play in the State Tournament. Roland, our first round opponent in the State, proved to be too much for us, stopping us S to l, behind the pitching of Gary Thompson. Thus, a I3 game winning streak was brought to an end. Pitching played an important part in the Rams success last spring. Our three pitchers, Don Anderson, Pete Grange, and Bill Whiting combined their ef forts to pitch 6 no hitters. Don pitched four of these, 2 in the tournaments. Bill and Pete each pitched one, Bill's being a perfect game in which he faced the minimum number gr batters, El. RAMS CUNLINUE TO WIN!! The Rams proved to be just as tough during the summer as they were in the spring. with Jake Hoekstra as manager, they again entered the tournaments unde feated. The Ram's first real test came in the first round game of the Distrlct Tbur nament when they defeated Storm Lake, A to O. Don turned in what was probably his best pftching performance of the year striking out 18 of a possible 2l Storm Lake batters. Rutnven met Inwood in the finals of the district and before one of the larg est crowds ever to see a ballgame in Ruthven, defeated Inwood, l to O. Eight teams remained in tournament play. At the Sub State, Ruthven was :gapped by Corwith, 1 to O, to avenge an earlier 3 to l defeat at the hands of e Rams. 1 an 4,,.1 'gf T .. x efpa bf '5msg- , , Q 3'f f f' A f' 54.4-... an y Q ' ff- ,- .
