Some of us will remember Stoney as a teac'her and some of us will remember him as a coach, but we all know him as a true friend whose humor and wisdom have helped make our high school years so enjoyable. We dedicate this yearbook to you, Mr. Stone, as our gesture of thanks with the hope that for years to come students of R. H. S, will have the privilege of knowing you as we have. Raul, whose fondest dream has always been to come to the United States, realized his ambition when his brother-in-law, a pilot in the Bolivian air force, was able to find room for him on a plane which was to go as far as San Antonio, Texas. From there, another airplane ride, followed by a long journey by bus brought Raul to R. H. S. Assigned a heavy schedule of classes, Raul was lost for a while in the hustle and bustle of Rutherford High, but when he came up for air, could find nothing but praise for the local school system. He was particularly impressed by the large number of extra-curricular activities available while the informal- ity of the classes here also surprised and delighted him. In his native Bolivia, Raul attended an English language school, The American Institute, and therefore, was not entirely unprepared to study his lessons in a foreign language. An ace athlete on his home grounds, he holds the all time records in his school for both the high and broad jumps, and also was a stand-by on both the soccer and softball teams. Raul intends to study in the U. S. until he receives enough credits to become a bona fide graduate of an American high school so that he may be able to attend college here. This might necessitate his attending summer school or, if it is possible, the Class of '49 might become the second in the history of the school to include a South American student as Raul finishes his studies here next year. 59 ff - ' M 'Q H S - 1 , in 5 ,- 4 1 hi ' , 2 'Q' f P EXW T 2 was .,,., ' -5? But long before, he had endeared himself to the public by his friendly, philosophical, often amusing verse. Riley had a large fondness for the Alnerican home, for thrift, for family life. These were the theme of many of his poems. He regarded the home as a primary influ- ence in shaping our national character and culture. This mutul Savings Association is founded on the same idea - on the principles of thrift and home ownership. It promotes such not only for economic reasons, but as an essential influence for family well-being, and as a developer of a strong community spirit.
