With camera and pen we have tried to catch the spirit of Rutgers-Newark. We call this yearbook ENCORE 1965. It is a reflection of our college life, and it is a search-within ourselves, our college experience, and the world-for understanding. Rutgers-Newark is a city college. Perhaps too much smog and too little ivy have been our lot, some have even said that the city's noise and dirt are poor substitutes for the quiet beauty of the secluded campus. Yet, in spite of such drab gray horizons, each student, in the presence of good books and wise scholars, is offered the academic truths of life. We are thankful that Rutgers-Newark has not isolated us from the rest of the world, we have not been given pat answers to the critical issues of our times. Instead, the stress has been on the career , for this, our professors, by word and by example, have been invaluable. Through their knowledge, we have begun to understand our modern life. How many times, and for what reasons, each of us will look back at ENCORE 1965 will be a matter of individual concern and, we hope, satisfaction. 1 X-I zmmumugwmwufmm MASGN WELCH GROSS President Ph.D. To the Senior Class of the Newark Colleges: The theme, Understanding Through Knowledge, chosen for your 1965 ENCORE is an appropriate one, for the time and place in which we 'Find ourselves. A l do not believe there has ever been such an abundance of situations, problems it you will, that demand understanding, in the highest and best sense of the word. Yet understanding, unless based upon knowledge, is at best a tolerant indifference, at worst, the most hopeless sentimentality. Without a sound base in knowledge, understanding lacks intelligent purpose. ln these college years, we hope you have gained at least the beginning of knowledge and understanding of yourselves, your fellow students, and of this world in which we live. We wish that this growth in both your knowledge and understanding may never end. Sincerely, Mason W. Gross gt l t t IRVING PAWA Dean of Students pw? AB., MA. Eiz i i Y 1 '- 'gg tl To the Class of 7965: When ENCORE'S editor, Miss Szulecki, informed me that the yearbook's theme would be Understanding Through Knowledge, I thought how timely this was, if extended beyond the walls of our classrooms and buildings, beyond our extracurricular activities and out into the world of Meridian, Mississippi and Selma, Alabama. Certainly our times call for understanding in the broadest sense, under- standing ot the rights and dignity of all men in all places. And how can understanding develop and flourish? Through knowledge, of course. You have had a rare opportunity during your undergraduate career now drawing to a close, you have been privileged to pursue and acquire knowl- edge and with it to test your ability to understand your college work, your teachers, and your peers. lt is my sincere hope that the opportunities you have had here and that which you have learned will help you to achieve a better understanding of the world into which you now go and that through the knowledge you have acquired at Rutgers you will help to spread understanding in the areas of our society which need it so badly. They assume most of the responsibility for student activity at Rutgers-Newark, and the burden is sometimes cumbersome, sometimes tiring and always challenging. 'xreii EFT?-T 7 ,f , 1 ? One of the most important aspects of college is the development of each student's personality and individuality. The classroom teaches the student discipline, theory, or facts, the lounge develops him as a social being, both very important lessons if the student is to become an intelligent, well-rounded individual. The GALLERY, as a literary magazine, furthers the student's development by giving him the chance to express himself, and by stimulating and encouraging his poetic, prose, and critical talents. For the student who appreciates good writing but cloes not write, the GALLERY offers enioyment and the enlightenment of Art. The value of the magazine lies in the fact that it gives recognition and support to talent and is the best way of spreading it on campus. You-Me-Us:GALLERY. OBSERVER Serving all the colleges of Rutgers-Newark, the Observer has always been a vital link between administration, faculty and student. As the undergraduate student newspaper, it feels a sincere responsibility to its readers. lt, therefore, presents itself as a newspaper, both in shape and scope. Many students sacrifice many hours to write and re-write the Observer. No one, either faculty, or administration, ex- amines any portion prior to publication. The result of this dedication and freedom is a student newspaper of considerable quality, your Observer. The crowning achievement of this senior's career was when he, Al McClure, was elected President of the New Jersey Collegiate Press Association. The OBSERVER loses the best collegiate sports writer of the state lfirst place three years runningj when George Bernet ends his five year stay at R-N. lt's Friday, and the printer makes his last pickup in ten minutes, and veteran columnist Herb Quigley types the final touches on his latest 'Other Voices.' l ,- ,.,,-J How does this sound: See Irv run, See Mary run, run Mary run. The ENCORE, a record of four memorable years of college at Rutgers- Newark, contains a small portion of everyone who worked on it. Although this book means much to all those who have attended Rutgers-Newark, to those of us who watched it develop, it has even deeper significance. The office was a home to all who gave themselves to this book. Copy was written, typed, proof-read, rewritten, retyped, reproof-read. Art work was created, ideas changed, and more art work created. Photographs were taken, sorted, edited, and finally marked for page and position. The editors pushed and prodded Qnot always gentlyj to meet deadlines. It seemed as if the ENCORE would never be completed, but as deadlines passed and the publisher received more and more of the contents, the chaos gradually receded. As problems were solved and results observed, tension was replaced with satisfaction and the ENCORE was ready for distribution. To the student body of Rutgers-Newark we give the ENCORE 1965. Incorporating all phases of college clramatics, it stresses that each member realize that success comes through coop- eration. New members, who are chosen by a committee of the chapter, must have at least two years experience in the dramatic arts. More important, however, new members must display this attitude of cooperation. Alpha Psi Omega holds an Initiation Banquet in the spring of each year. PHI ALPHA THETA Phi Alpha Theta, the National History Honor Society, celebrates its first year on the Newark campus this May. Organized by Dr. Zebel, the society seeks those people attaining not only outstanding honors in History but also a high cumulative average. Working in conjunction with the History Club, they have been in the process of organ- izing their activities, and sponsoring many distinguished speakers at ther meetings. Our annual Roman Toga Party, two Pledge Parties, a hayricle, and the always successful New Year's Eve Party, are but a few of the items clotting our social calender. In June, the annual Installation Dinner-Dance is helcl, with representatives of the school and of our Grand Chapter in attendance in addition to a nearly unanimous attendance by the Fellows. For the past nine years, Beta Sig has taken a great deal of pride in the Christmas Party they give for the East Orange Cardiac Children's Home. Scholarship is always a major concern to the fraternity. A Scholarship Committee guarantees that the Fellows will maintain the Chapter average which makes our National Fraternity the second highest rated in the country, in this vital area. In keeping with this concern for excellence, the fraternity invites guest speakers to the chapter house, where many inter- esting ideas are discussed in History, Political Science, and the Arts. In the area of leadership, Beta Sig is extremely active in campus affairs. Our membership includes various members of the Student Council and the IFC. Leadership is also developed in sports, and Beta Sig is always a top contender in IFC football, basketball, ping-pong, and baseball. Oops, l'm losing my panfs! And wl1ai's your name? DELTA PHI DELTA Founded in l934, Delta Phi Delta has achieved continued success in maintaining its ideals of sisterhood, scholarship, and leadership. The sorority serves its members by providing an opportunity for a well-rounded college life and stimulating an interest in those activities which will render the sisters helpful to one another and to the University. Highlights of our social calendar include such events as a Parent-Faculty Smorgasbord, the Thanksgiving Eve Banquet, an annual Theater Party, the Mother-Daughter Tea, and an Initiation Banquet in May. This year the sisters worked diligently putting down new floors and tiles in their house. Such typically co-operative efforts and activities provide many fond memories and contribute to the pervading atmosphere of sisterhood and unity of this closely-knit, well-functioning organization. Beta Omicron Chapter was founded at Rutgers-Newark in 1937 through the support of Dean George Esterly of the School of Business Administration. The main purpose of the fraternity and the chapter is to prepare students of commerce for their role as future businessmen. Besides this, social and athletic activities round out the chapter's program: two formal dances a year, two formal initiations a year, frequent house parties, a Christmas party for underprivileged children, IFC sports participation and during the summer, a beach party and a picnic. These and our many other activities are secondary to the overall atmosphere of brotherhood and fraternalism prevalent among all Delta Sigs. 'AHenfion! They musf be pledges. A conservative group! DELTA SIGMA THETA Delta Sigma Theta was founded in 1914, and the Epsilon Chapter was chartered at the college of Pharmacy in 1923. The only tri-professional fraternity in the world, DST encompasses pharmacy, medicine, and den- tistry with chapters extending to the far reaches of Scotland, Lebanon, and Italy. Since the fraternity's inception, the brothers of DST have kept the ideals of fraternalism and professionalism forever in their hearts. It is because of this that Delta Sigma Theta has attracted to its ranks the indi- vidual, who by his own advancement of knowledge advances the knowledge of those around him, the individual who believes that a fraternity molds the character of those who have chosen fellowship as the common element among uncommon minds. 1 v w. . .M w ru l' , . , -e.- V, . . f, ,,,,.,,. Thus, during initiations, where respect for dignity is upheld, the honored symbols, glove, cane, top-hat, have always been standard equipment. Glove and Stick has become an integral part of college life. Its members can be found participating in the various intellectual, social, and athletic activities of the university. Although proficiency exists in many fields, there is still possibly a very active and entertaining social program. This includes numerous song-fests, dances, beach parties and stag affairs, but the highlight is without a doubt, Glove and Stick's Annual Orphan's Party, an affair which has become traditional at Rutgers-Newark. Today, Kappa Psi boasts a membership of 23,000 brothers. The collegiate chapters of Kappa Psi number 55, and the graduate ethics of its professional status. Omega Chapter of Rutgers College of Pharmacy maintains the highest degree of fraternalism, professionalism, and leadership, which is indicative to all Kappa Psi men throughout the United States. Professionally, the Omega men have shown their capabilities by award- winning pharmacy displays and by proiects in conjunction with Open House at R.C.P. Each year, Omega Chapter sponsors a fund-raising event with the proceeds donated to the Heart Fund. Socially, Omega Chapter is kept active by its Smoker, Halloween and Christmas parties, Dinner Dance, and Sweetheart Dance among other social activities. Athletically, Omega Chapter is top-ranked in all major sports including eight consecutive championships in touch football and basketball. The Chapter has also made a clean sweep of the football, basketball, and softball championships in 1963-64. By a blend of these fraternal activities with a formal pharmacy educa- tion, the Kappa Psi man is well suited to maintain the high standards of his profession during his college career and after graduation. .,,--I-'K ,11:-- , , ,,..-- ff- 1 -252 4 X , The Nc boys. ga Away we go. 6 md of Up a little higher, Mike. Being a pharmaceutical fraternity, Rho Pi Phi has set as its goal the maintenance and advancement of good ethical practice within the profession. At Eta Chapter, we have proceeded along these ethical lines through our professional displays, informative speeches to groups of high school students, conferences among active and alumni chapters, a weekly presen- tation of medical films at the college and a free interchange of ideas with other chapters through our chapter publication entitled The Rope News. In addition to our professional pursuits we have a social life that is garnished with many worthwhile events, including our combination active- chapter N.J. alumni social events, conferences, bagel busts, picnics, and parties. All the brothers of Eta Chapter feel that active participation in these endeavors are very rewarding. rex 'AEG hhhh it Every year the fraternity re-enacts the ancient Aztec rain dance. The fraternity dates back to 1929 when it was known as the Ephamia Society and subsequently Sigma Beta Chi. Tau Kappa Epsilon was voted Best Fraternity on Campus for the third year in a row. Scholastically TKE holds a total cumulative average well above the mean for Rutgers-Newark. On the football field Tekes are also potent, this year scoring 254 points while. yielding only I3 points. Six wins brought the IFC Football Trophy with it. Unity and organization are of prime importance to TKE. The recent purchase of a new house has served as a useful outlet for cooperatively planned work sessions. Fraternal views are published in the FRATERVANE three times yearly. At the helm of TKE organization is the Board of Control, comprised of alumni. Many varied parties and social events are planned to suit the interest of all fraters. These include swim parties, theme parties, bi-annual banquets, and a formal dinner dance. Summers are, of course, spent beneath the sunny skies of Belmar, along New Jersey's shore. TEKE Cheerleaders. Over 40 commissions have been awarded to Rutgers-Newark students in the AFROTC program, which is offered in coop- eration with the Department of Air Science at the Newark College of Engineering. The four-year program includes classroom work and leadership laboratory and is designed to give sufficient practical and the- oretical instruction to enable a cadet to be quickly integrated into the Air Force with a minimum amount of additional training. Emphasis is placed upon preparing the cadet for his chosen field in the Air Force. Open to cadets are opportunities to par- ticipate in various extra-curricula activities including the rifle team, the cadet corps band and the trick drill team. Upon the completion of a Flight Instruction program, initiated in 1958, a cadet may apply for a private pilot's license. This special program is designed to give up to 36 hours of instruction in a light aircraft to all seniors enrolled in the pilot category. However, this publication would have been an impossibility without the interest, advice, and cooperation of these people. Mr. Edward Bathmann for patience and endurance-an ideal publisher. Mr. Richard Gross and Mr. Marvin Gershenfeld for their fine photography. Dean Pawa and Dean Woodward for their cooperation. Dr. Zocca for advice and encouragement. Mr. Fred Banta for moral support and inspiration in times of need. Mr. Mahoney for guidance. Mr. Thomas Gates for his unusual ability to calm our moments of tension and frustration. Amy Harris for her expert counsel of our financial affairs. Mr. Reese for enduring our last minute mailing and supply demands with a smile. Marie, Carmella, and Martha for a kind word. The OBSERVER staff for the use of their pictures and editor. Bob Schiesel-What can I say? Words are inadequate for this acknowledgement. Our parents for understanding. The pledges for their devoted support and willingness to aid in any capacity. And all those who helped to make this publication a success. DR LOUIS ZOCCA STAFF Judy Szulecki .....
