MR. JOHN P. KIRKWOOD — Director of Personnel and Placennent We respectfully dedicate the 1956 Scarlet Letter to . . . Mr. John Patton Kirkwood, Director of Personnel and Placement. It is most fitting that the Senior book be dedicated to the man who gives us the initial push into that part of our life for which these 16 years of schooling and 21 years of education have been mere preparation. And lucky we are here at Rutgers to have such an interested and capable a man as Mr. Kirkwood to assume this all-important posi- tion. Mr. Kirkwood came to Rutgers in 1927 from New York City. As an undergraduate he was Captain of the lacrosse team, an AIJ-Americon in that sport, a member of the Student Council and elected into Cap and Skull. He graduated in 1931 and received a B.S. in Agriculture. From Rutgers he went to the Curtiss Publishing Company, later the Interwoven Stocking Company and still later the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company where he was one of their top salesmen for several years. On coming to Rutgers in 1941, he served as associate alumni secretary and soon rose to alumni secretary and then to assistant director of the Office of Personnel and Placement, assum- ing his present position of direc tor in 1944. At present he is also serving as Vice President of the Middle Atlantic Placement Officers Association. As a private citizen, Mr. Kirkwood has served 3 terms as a member of the Metuchen Board of Education and has been active in Middlesex County Cub and Boy Scouting. He also has served as a deacon on the Metuchen Re- formed Church and is currently serving as superintendent of the church Sunday School. The foregoing makes it obvious that we here at Rutgers have an excellent administrator and citizen in our director of Personnel and Placement. If this has not convinced you, then you have but to talk with him for 30 minutes, as we seniors have done, to be thoroughly assured. ;

DR. LEWIS WEBSTER JONES — President of the University This school year is Dr. Jones fifth as President of Rutgers University. The new Library is almost completed. We can see the beginnings of a twelve million dollar expansion program across George Street where College Park is no more. The Trustees hove been reorganized to facilitate functioning, make us more of a state university and make the people of New Jersey aware of the fine institution they have in Rutgers. No coincidence this. Thanks to Dr. Jones Rutgers has a brighter future than it has ever hod. And thanks be that this future planning was not accomplished at the expense of present needs. Not only is Dr. Jones a loyal and effective administrator, but he is also a fine gentleman and we, as students of this University, are proud to have him as our President.
