LEWIS WEBSTER JUNES President ef the University In The midsT oT packing To reTurn To The Banks in SepTember, RuTgers men learned ThaT Their new presidenT had been chosen. AT The Time oT his appoinTmenT, Dr. Lewis WebsTer Jones had behind him a brillianT career as gov- ernmenT economisT, ediTor, and educaTor. l-le TirsT achieved naTional recogniTion in educa- Tional circles as presidenT oT Torward Thinking BenningTon College. From There he was called To WashingTon To serve on PresidenT Truman's Commission on l-ligher EducaTion and Then To The presidency oT The UniversiTy oT Arkansas. One oT These problems on which he goT righT To work was The winning oT STaTehouse supporT Tor The UniversiTy. As one resulT, plans Tor a new library were well underway by The Time of his inauguraTion, on May eighTh, as RuTgers TiTTeenTh presidenT. Dr. Jones expressed his aTTiTude Toward his new iob when he said, I Tind The educa- Tional siTuaTion aT RuTgers a sTimulaTing chal- lenge which l do noT believe could be dupli- caTed by any oTher insTiTuTion in The counTry. RecenTly The people oT New Jersey recognized The TuncTions oT a STaTe UniversiTy.
