edication WALTER WEAVER HERKNESS, JR., Ed.D. Editor of Handbook for War Assistant Professor of English 1957 Assistant Dean 1959 Director of the Rutgers' Summer Session in Camden Coordinator of student personnel and Convocations Coach of the Debating Team Moderator of the Gleaner The Seniors of Rutgers, The State University at Cam- den, choose each year to honor a member of the faculty or the administration. The process of bestowing this honor is, in reality, an act of tribute, and every delicacy is re- sorted to see that the tribute is properly weighted - if, indeed, it can be. This year Walter W. Herkness, Assistant Dean of the College, as well as faculty member, is hon- ored on this dedication page. Dean Herkness has served ably and well, and it is idle to recount his many services to his students. It is better to center our pride on the life philosophy of our Dean. Spinoza, in two wonderful sentences, tells us: A man who desires to hel-p others by counsel or deed will refrain from dwelling on men's faults, and will speak but spar- ingly of human weakness. But he will speak at large of man's virtue and power, and the means of perfectingfrhe same, that thus men may endeavour ioyously to live, so far as in them lies, after the commandment of reason. He epitofnizes the great Aristotelian balance in life and takes great care to help us find this rest in activity. We must say that while Dean Herkness teaches us how to live well, he also leads us along the path of a discovery of the essential of living. He is, quite simply, a special spirit and, as Nicholas Ber- dyaev candidly said: The spirit is activity and creation and freedom. Activity, Creation, and Freedom are the essentials of our being. To our minds, Dean Herkness has not only found these for himself but has, to an unprecedented de- gree, attempted to convey this message to us. lt is not possible to capture the real value of Dr. Herkness' contri- butions to the students and to the University on the printed page. Suttice it to say that Dean Herkness be- comes an intimate part of every student's college experi- ence here at Rutgers. Dean Herkness is, and will continue to be, a vital tradition on this campus.
