Tlzfrd Rnzw: Thode, Smith, RJ., Yes, Mr. Bell, if you want big men and women to become executives in your telephone company, I would suggest you draw heavily on the class of '58. Of course, it will be five more years before they finish college, but they are worth waiting for. You ask for my reasons? The leaders of the class were such men as Bernard Karshmer, Billy Smith and Art Karshmer. Bunny Karshmer was Secretary ofthe Student Council, Business Manager of Ye Dial, and was active in sports. Billy was the President of the Junior Class, and Art was Vice- President. He also participated in the Aviation and Navigation Clubs, the Argo, and the V. soccer team. As for the women, Sally Searls, Arlene Green- berg, Jackie Kaufelt and Barbara Lipman sup- ported the soccer and basketball teams as cheer- leaders. Arlene was also the Secretary-Treasurer of the class. Flossy Schmitt was Copy Editor on the yearbook and a Class Editor for the Argo. Louise DiLalo was also a Class Editor for the Argo and a member of the planning board ofthe Chem Club. Kathy McCabe was another lively member ofthe class. Kamm, Twitchell, Dunaenko, Levowitz. Fnurlh Huw: Karsh- mer, B. Smith, W. Burke, Karshmer, A. Nielsen. Several members of the Junior Class sang in the Clee Club this fall. The Chem Club attracted about Hfteen Juniors every Wednesday afternoon. The officers for the first semester were Marty Levo- witz, Arlene Greenberg and Barbara Lipman. Juniors composed a large part ofthe Argo and Ye Dial staffs. Louise, Flossy,Jon Margolis, Dick Conrad and Arlene were Editors on the Argo. Barbara and Bunny were reporters. Flossy and Bunny were Copy Editor and Bus- iness Manager respectively on Ye Dial. Dick Con- rad, Ray,Barbara, Arlene, Sally and Jackie were also on the staff. Many Junior boys, Bob Fiermonti, Bob Bronf- man,Jon Margolis, Marty Levowitz, Art Karsh- mer, Bob Smith, Bunny Karshmer, Dick Twit- chell, and Jim Burke were on the intramural bas- ketball teams or the soccer team. Many others were on the basketball and baseball teams. You see, there is no question about it. In every field the Junior Class has gained recognition, in some places distinction. We hope they will continue their long up-hill climb. l'nx! lwu' lxzus 'LANE filiUMl'1'l'RY llllli I, A Hun na nlxu llllllldll Kxuqh, 1' ' , f , , . xlllfllll fum' Sculllx, SH , , . Bruce Miller, President, was our rep- resentative on the Student Council. Jerry Gildar and Ballard Jacobson were the Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer respectively. This trio handled the frequent class meetings with authority. The Freshmen took their varied activities to heart. Suzanne Hancox, Ballard Jacobson, Peter lN'intersteiner, Bardy Iievavy and Ronnie Smyth represented us on the Ye Dial staff. Peter Wlinter- steiner and Ronnie Smyth held editorial jobs on the Argo. Others including Billy Long, Judy Hecht, Nancy l,ee, and Bert Thompson helped in produc- ing the monthly publication, Most of the girls and several boys in the l rc-shman Class participated in the Glee Club. Six ninth graders joined Mr. Dumarae's Kibitzers Club. A majority of these studied Latin with him. About one half ofthe Astronomy Club, under Mr. Heinlein's guidance, consisted of ninth graders. The lwechanical Drawing, Navigation and Aviation Clubs, all under the supervision of Mr. Moffat, interested many of the boys. Bruce Warr and .Ierry Gildar became members of the V. soccer team. Many ofthe ninth grade boys were on the baseball, basketball and swim- ming squads. The intramural basketball team also had representatives from this class. Larry Scully and Steve Nehlig showed much promise in after school games. For the support of these athletes there were two Freshman cheerleaders if Suzanne Hancox and Jo Ann Milliken. Nancy Tomkinson served as substitute. As one can see, our class was well represented in all of Prep's activities. This year's Student Council worked completely on parliamentary procedure and proved to be one of the best in Prep's history. There were frequent meet- ings of the council, giving the student body a greater chance to participate in the government. The officers of the Student Council were elected at the end of the previous year. Steve Hancox, on the Independent ticket, was installed as president. The other members of the student council came from the Progressive Party. They were Joe Messina, Vice-Presi- dent, Bunny Karshmer, Secretary, and Danylo Struk, Treasurer. The class elections provided the other members of the Student Council. Dave Stephen and Andy Pis- eatelli were elected as representatives from the Senior Class. Billy Smith and Arthur Karshmer were elected from the junior Class while Bruce Gunkle and Irving Quackenboss represented the Sophomores. The ninth and eighth grades elected Bruce Miller and Sid Woo- ten respectively. The social activities ofthe school were started by the council with a barbecue and a 'dance. This was followed by many other successful dances throughout the year. I Also through the efforts of the council the students benefited in a longer lunch period. Intramural bas- ketball was added by the Student Council to enlarge the social curriculum. The Council this year worked together with the Key Club in establishing a new constitution for the school. Having only a very old copy of the constitu- tion, the Council passed many amendments to make the constitution workable for a higher form of student democracy. Striving toward giving the studentsmore say in the government, the Student Council worked in co- operation with the faculty to make Rutgers Prep one of the best self governed student bodies. lc'111 111' SlllCl4'Ill 11111111111 Stvu' ll11111'11x, I11s1c 11111111-il OH11'1'1's S1001 In Uisvuss 1 Nvxx l'1-11l1l1'111: N'1t'SSillQl, K2ll'Sll llll'lg, li., lig1111'11x, Sllkllk. Moreland.Nielscn. A GLEE CLU B This year's Clee Club was larger and more successful than ever before. Under the able dir- ection of Mrs. Durkee, many Prep students worked diligently from early October to the beginning of December. Practices were held every Thursday during Activities Period in the study hall. It was the common sound to hear the Clec Club members humming Christmas Carols and anthems through the halls of Prep. All the hard work culminated in a Christmas Concert held on December 7. The gym was filled with eager parents and friends and the spirit and magic of Christmas time were in the air. Mr. Moffat and some ofthe boys had set up a stage, and Christmas trees placed near there added to the Christmas feeling. The Clee Club sang about fourteen sel- ections. Bobby Fiermonti's solo, 'LSweet Little Jesus Boy , was well received by everyone. Mrs. Durkee also sang a solo as a part of I Wfonder As I W7ander.,, The chorus from the Lower School also participated in the program. Essential to the success of the program, was Mr. Dumarae, the faculty advisor, who worked diligently each rehearsal. A lot of credit belongs to the two pianists, Nancy Haworth and Betsy Kady. ,.. We met every Tuesday during activities period and Mr. Daviet helped us with our various experiments. We were dealing with fields covering electricity, chemistry, and astronomy. We took a trip to Hayden Planetar- ium during Christmas vacation and en- joyed it thoroughly. We saw an amateur presentation ofthe constellations which was quite interesting in the school library. The officers who presided most of the time were: Sid Wooten, presidentg Richard Schatzman, both vice president and chairman ol' the planning committeeg and jerry Schwalje, secretary. The Club was made up of people from many grades who entered by means of writing a five hundred word composition on any phase of science. The members had an unwritten set of rules to which everyone was asked to abide. NVQ' did several experiments. We made magnets, hydrogen and nutty putty, among several other things. Drxlr: Levine, Heinlein, Ruttiger. Weiss. Although the Advanced Chem Club had been in existence for two years, this was the first year that it had been successful. The mem- bership was confined to persons who had taken chemistry before. The club consisted of nine members. They were Alan Rackmillhlohn Maffett, Mar- tin Bertman, Merle Schiffmayer, Sharon Ries, Aaron Medinets, Nancy Haworth, Ed Otken, and Richard Schwartz. The elections for officers were held at the beginning and end of the first semester. Pre- siding as president the first semester was Richard Schwartz, with Merle Schiffmayer elected as-'vice president. The second semester the club elected Marty Bertman and Ed Otken Advanced Chem Club Members Watch Experiment Bertman, Schiffmayer, Maffett, Haworth. Van Degraff Medinets. ADVANCED CHEM CLUB president and vice president respectfully. During the first semester, t e club worked diligently in presenting a play which was en- titled All Wet. It was presented to the Sci- ence Club and the Chemistry Club during activities period. Alan Rackmill starred in the role of Phineas T. Vaccuum, and he was assisted by his famous German colleague Herr T.U. Tonik played by Ed Otken. Some of the experiments involved in the play were: the mutation of water from one color to another by a few magic words, in- flammable ice, hard water, and explosive soap bubbles. During the second semester many trips were taken to various chemical industries. Over the past five years Prep has piled up a really admirable 06-138 win lost record, which ranks among the county's best. Although this was far from the best record the boys have had, they did pile up some impressive victories. 'l'hey easily out distanced a scrappy Newark-Rutgers quintet, and also piled up their highest point output ofthe year by thoroughly trouncing Admiral Far- ragut, 96-77. As usual, Prep displayed quite an array ofoutstanding ball players. Ronnie Iackowilz and .jim Murray ran second and third in county scoring while Andy Piscatelli chipped in with some excellent defensive and offensive work as well as being the top reboundcr. Wlhile averaging 22 counters a game, Ronnie broke the magic 1000 point mark for his three year high school basketball career. Starting the season with an easy 00-55 victory over St. Mary's of South Amboy, Prep dropped their next game to the lowering Peddie school quintet. Despite the 015-70 score, this was perhaps Prep's liest all around court showing ofthe year. l,itlle 0' 2 Ronglackowitz managed to outseore Peddie's 6' 8 all-stater Doug Kistler, and fi' 7 Dan Berry, by throwing in 29 points. Jimmy Murray also had a fine day by cutting the cords for 26 counters. Traveling down to Pennington, the l.ittle Scarlet seemed to have the ballgame well in hand by entering the fourth quar- ter with a 9 point margin over Penn- ington's first class ball club. but loose de- fensive work and little drive on the offensive helped Pennington overcome the deficit and go ahead to win by a 78-70 count. The O,Connellmen should have added at least two more knotchcs to their gun if it had not been for poor perfor- mances against Admiral Farra-gut and South River. The best local team that Prep faced was a well-rounded, well- drilled Sayreville squad which easily dumped the loose playing Prepsters by a 70-48 count. This year's squad which was rounded out bvjoe Messina, Bruce Gunkle, Mon- key Feldman, and -lim Burke, went on to the finals ofthe Group III Prep School Tournament only to be upset by Admiral Farragut, 67-64.
