NVhen the final decision of starting births was made, three of our boys were among the first eleven. All of two hundred pounds, Little joe januszewski was the sturdy centerg fleet-footed and talented Dick Cumer- lock, one of the hardest pluggers in school, held down the left half-back positiong and smiling john Carboski, class vice-president, was the regular right tackle. Dick Dunne, Mike jensen, jolm Allgair, and Harry Veros, who unfortunately broke his leg toward the end of the season, improved greatly this year. and they are strong candidates for our starting eleven next fall. As Christmas drew near, Mr. Housman, pushing in the ends of the worn out football, formed a spherical figure called a basketball and began to mold a team that was to become the best Prep has had for many years. Only one junior was good enough to make the squad, but he was the varsity high scorer. He was our elongated center jolmny Hines. The jay-Vees, on the other hand. had a nucleus of juniors. The team started off poorly but gradually gained momentum, and toward the end of the year, they passed the five hundred mark. junior participants were: jack Powers, the lngh scorer, Stuart jay, jim lufinger, Mike jensen and Bill Opdyke, both of whom improved vastly, Dave XVurtzel, Martin Birnbaum and Donald Aichroth. Ah yes. then there are those nostalgic memories. Led by a fugitive from Mr. Groves Glee Curb, after dinner entertainment was well provided for by our piano virtuoso, Chet Turdo, and his jazzed-up five, consisting of Iloehman, jay, Powers and isavanagh. Harold Lavoie and jay VVnlfson were our engineer experts. Une wonders how long it will take them to invent something to supplant the atom bomb. Thanks to Herb Beaujon who did a perfectly wonderful job on the murals for the football dance. Moffitt played the radio while Pope read maga- zines about ships. XValter Quinn had trouble with his roommate who was a fresh air fiend. jay's room grew more picturesque with each edition of Pin-Ups . Wikoff and XVolfe attended French class every day. Bvsiclvs. wt- ull haul at good tinun l The social season was inaugurated hy a Barn Dance gfrcn in the gym. Cornstalks, pumpkins. gardening tools, and wheel harrows placed in strategic positions transforlned the gym into a lofty harn. Animated drawings hy joe Lehow of various harnyard characters adorned the walls, The affair was attended hy a multitude of fun-seeking couples who were not to he disappointed. Square dancing. under the guidance of an expert caller, and hallroom danc-Ing were enjoyed hy everyone. Cider from an old oaken barrel and apples contained in a cornstalk-shrouded cart seemed to satisfy all those seeking refreshments. Une of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of a UNIUTOIIYS Delight to NValter Quinn and his date for heing chosen the most farmerly looking couple. Next on the schedule was the Fall Formal given in honor of the foothall team. Perhaps it might he said that never hefore had a group of Prepsters worked so long or so diligently in the preparation of this animal affair. Three sides of the gym were covered hv red and White strips of paper which had heen lahori- ously painted hy hand. On the remaining wall, huge ten-foot murals of foothall players. drawn hy Ilerh Beaujou, gazed down upon the elegantly dressed couples as thev glided ahont under the streamer-decked ceiling. The hand. situated hehin'd a white goal post, sent forth strains of sweet music which completed the transformation of the Prep gym into a gay nightcluh that might have heen called The Gridiron . To those Prepsters who spent long days and nights decorating the gym, it was a night of triumph. One of the outstanding events of the social season was the Foothall Banquet given to the team after the completion of their verv successful season. Invitations were extended to every meniher of the team and his father. The affair had a yerv friendly atmosphere with everyone assmhling hefore and after dinner in the eonnnons room of the Beta llouse. Here, fathers were ahle to meet faculty mem- hers and other memhers of the team and their fathers. As soon as the' dining room had heen rearranged after dinner. the guests reassemhld for the presenta- tion of the athletic letters to the memhers of the team. At this time short speeches were given hv Mr. Shepard. Mr. Ilolley, Mr. Ilousman, and hy the guest speaker. the lieverend Mr. Dunne. The social season was concluded hv a Soring Formal given hy the Alunior class in honor of the outgoing Seniors. This dance was held May 21st, and the juuior Class President, Stuart lay, was in charge of decorations and arrange- ments. k A I. x lg! , . . A sp J ff . 1. , 1 V: gy 1 W fr ' I x x A . Z. Holley has one of the best balanced teams he has had in several seasons. Thus far. the infield shapes up with Cookie Young at first, jack Powers and VValt Kloss protecting second base, and lumbering joe 'Ianuszewski at third base. This year's catching staff is one of the strongest in the area. Larry Ilannon and Dick Hochman, both equal in experience and ability, will be sharing the baekstopping throughout the 1948 season. The outfield is also full of experience with joe Bradshaw, john Carboski, Tom Beaudette, and john Marder. The big question is, as always, the pitching staff. This big question will be answered on Friday, April sixteenth, when they play Hun School. This year's pitching corps is comprised of Dick NVarden, Hal Lefty Coyne, john llines, Arnie Rettig. and Bugs Gellatly. HUN SCHOOL - 2 RUTCERS PREP - 0 Sandy Buck, llun Schools lanky fireball right-hander, spoiled R. Pfs 1948 diamond debut as he pitched a neat five inning, one-hit shutout to lead the Princeton nine to a 2-0 conquest of the Prepsters. Scoring single runs in each of the first two innings, Hun was never seriously threatened by a squad whose batting was definitely not keen. RUTCERS PREP - 8 HIGHLAND PARK - 6 A good night's sleep, apparently, is the best cure for a batting ailment. For the morning after the Ilun School game Rutgers Prep wrote its initial victory of the 1948 baseball campaign into the record books. The Red and XV'hite, meeting the offerings of Larry YVolk and Ted Schmidt for six solid base-knocks and taking advantage of the loose fielding of Highland Park's Owls, scored seven runs in the first two innings to emerge with an S-6 triumph. The strong wind was anything but conducive to good Gelding and pitching, but in spite of' this Dick YVarden set down ten men on strikes. 11' We PREP TUE QXTEURS Mhz 031151- PREP 'fo PREP GTUE Q11 u -Grp Gm, 'TU Q11-una? A I With the first track meet scheduled less than two weeks away, Mr. Housman has been pushing the runners to cut down their times and the weight men to increase the distance of their throws. The weight men: Lou Vasvary, jack Pursel, john Cochran, Phil Emhnry, Lou Fedor, and Bob 0'Leary are perhaps the most formidable part of the Prep squad. High hopes are pinned on such sprinters as: Dick Gumerlock, Chet Turdo, Bob O'Leary, Bob Nyman, Clyde Harms, and joe Lehow. The half milers: Ham VVright, Len Diamond, Gil Eiseman, Harold Horn- lug. Dick Fleming. Kearny Kuhlthau, and Hank Vicrling, are really out in force. Cap Pope, and jim Efinger, and Harold Lavoie will take care of the mile. The hurdles will he looked after hy Chet Turdo, Boh O,Leary, and Len Diamond. llerh lleaujou, Mike jenseu, and Lou Fedor will concentrate on the pole vault. With these fellows giving their all, the Rutgers Prep track team looks forward to a successful season. TRACK .-Xpril 23 I'cuu. Relays M ay l N e wa rk ,.,,., 5 Montclair... , ll N. ll. ,l.
