And the little prince went back to meet the fox. Goodbye, he said. Goodbye, said the fox. And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: lt is only with the heart that one can see rightly: what is essential is invisible to the eye. -Antoine de Saint Exupery, The Little Prince JOSEPH MORELLO This is to acknowledge my appreciation and debt to those without whom this individual would not be possible: My MOTHER and FATHER CELIA and HUGO My Sister-in-law APRIL And Others-who gave their time selflessly and T recognized a small voice in a big crowd 1,2,3 RONALD MODLINGER

.L A. li., .A ,ll.l.n. EDMUND MICHAEL I was born in San Fernando, Trinioad in 1945, and have always been fascinated by the different aspects of medical practice. However, out of all the different fields of medicine, I am most attracted to Family Practice, in which l plan to do a residency. I believe that medicine has enormous potential to draw the peoples of the world together, since all people, whether they be black, white, or yellow, whether they be Communist or cap- italistic, whether they be Arab or Jew, have the potential of becoming seriously ill and thus requiring medical attention. To me, it is very distressing to observe the inequities between rich and poor, between developed and under-developed nations, and I sincerely believe, perhaps somewhat idealistically, that the true physician, in his capacity of being a healer of body and soul has the enormous potential of contributing his share in helping to promote goodwill and friendship between all men that this world would eventually become a much better place for our children to come to live in. 5-.L , ax . .l a.-gale-'-h i s 'Ja - JAMES MILMAN

For where there is love of man there is also love of the art. For some patients though conscious that their condition is perilous, recover their health simply through their contentment with the goodness of the physician . . . Life is short and the art long. . .
