Sixty years ago RHS opened its doors in a red brick building on the site of the present Civic Center. Ten years later RHS continued to educate her students in an efficient news build- ing on Cooktown Road. We felt the need for expansion in 1952 and 1968, adding new classrooms, library, gym, and cafeteria. Yes, we are growing older, but we continue to meet the needs of stu- dents. 2 Opening E 1' fl' xi-.gift 2, Three o'cIock hos finally arrived. 2-4-6-8-10! Over the years, the name Ruston High School has become known for excellence in the fields of athletics and academics, as well as in its extra-curricular pro- gram. Evidence of this can be seen in the many Bearcats who have gradu- ated and contributed much to soci- ety. 6 0 Opening I ' el' st 'W 4 ' I 1' f 'M , 34 N4 1 D it j . ff -A 1, V I v 1 1 gf.: ' gtg N r 1 47.4 .ai .Q ri 28 Eff ' -1 W , l 35 ' ' 'rbi , V 'A . rare aw 4, 'LA-'f11i- 4 4 Q 1 l x V -pg? We see this spirit come to surface each time we clap at a pep rally, cheer for a touch-down, help a friend with homework, talk to a counselor, vote for class president, or work on a student council ticket. The Bearcat Spirit means we are one, working and playing together, shar- ing the good times and the bad. Opening 9 Haw , ,. We look to past experiences for guidance in the future. And as we grow older our accumulated experiences make us wiser. Ruston High School, this year celebrated her Diamond Jubilee. We are a school rich in tradition. Through the years many things have changed at Ruston High School, but one thing always remains constant - The Bearcat Spirit. It is the spirit that enriches the lives of all her students. RHS has many and varied activities to offer those who are willing to invest a part of their life in her. As students the activities we participate in here at Ruston High School are important part of life's experiences. Every experience makes us more mature in some way, and our days at Ruston High School won't soon be forgotten. We hope that this edition of the Resume will recall the experiences of the 1981-82 school year. Yes, we are simply growing older. GQ . On a sloppy, rainy night both offensive clubs struggled as the defense dominated the game. The Bearcat coaching staff was not pleased with the performance, as they felt we did not play up to our poten- tial. RUSTON 16 - Byrd 8 Winning this opening game was a big boost for the Bearcats. Bearcats had an early scare, but it didn'thave a definite effect on the outcome of the game. The offense fought back to produce a scoring drive. The two point conversion failed, but Byron Miller made up for this with a 64 yard field goal. Later in the second half, once again, the Bearcats pounced down the field to score the final time in the game. This made the final score 16-8. Football A D RUSTON 30 - Bolton 7 The Bearcats showed without a doubt that they were able to come steadily with the Quad-A teams by demolishing the Bolton Baby Blue Bears 30-7. You may have heard that the offense only scored 14 points, and if so, you heard right. Al Lazarus intercept- ed 2 Bolton passes and returned both for Ruston scores. Then later on in the game, the Bearcats tough front four contributed to tackling Bolton in their own end- zone for a safety. As you can tell, the defense played extremely well, while the offense produced 2 scores after a sluggish start. 1.0-a .Q f , Ruston 29 - Bossier 7 The Bearcats got their best team effort in this game. They opened up with on 81 yard kickoff return by Bernard Garr. The Bear- cat offensive team could not be denied in the first half and rolled on to a 29-O halftime lead. During the second half, though, the sec- ond teamers couldn't get much going, and the game ended with a 29-7 victory for the Cats. r in T- , 'ff' l RUSTON 21 - Airline 14 The Cats were indeed tested in this game. We were down 14 to 0 in the first half, but drove the length of the field in the last min- utes to make the score 14-7 at half. After intermission, we scored again to tie up the score. With fifty-six seconds remaining in the game, AI Lazarus recovered a fumble to give the Bearcats one last chance for their fourth straight victory. Football 0 157 RUSTON 30 - Ouachita 34 The Bearcats lost their first game of the season against a stubborn Ouachita team. lt was the game of the offenses, as Ruston opened up with two quick scores. But Ouachita had come to play, and also scored quickly. By the middle of the fourth quarter, the Lions had taken hold of the lead. The Cats fought desperately to come back, but it was not meant to be. We had lost our first game of the season, but another loss would not come for a long time. The Tigers were never in the game, as the mighty Cats rolled to their fifth victory with just one defeat. Both the of- fense and the defense used Jones- boro as practice dummies to get ready for the tough district sched- ule ahead. ia , -1 ,,...uusl1i' ,s ,V 1 Q RUSTON 6 - West Monroe It was Homecoming night, and amongst all the festivities, the Crunch Bunch led the way for the seventh Bearcat victory. The defense rose to the occasion sev- eral times during the night, while the offense scored once, which was all that was needed. The Mighty Cats were only two games away from winning their first dis- trict championship in ten years. fi l H RUSTON 24 - Ne ville 6 This game was the first real test for the Bearcats in Quad A action. The Cats rose to the occasion and demolished the highly ranked Ti- gers from Neville. Everyone was a hero in the game, but Shannon Frasier led the way by scoring once and by making a long run, which is pretty good considering that Shannon is an offensive line- man. This victory proved that Bearcat football was once again on the rise, and that no one could take our Cars lightly. - uf Q . Patrick Goldsmith had a 96 yard 'punt return, Wayne Buggs scored from 8 yards out. and Byron Miller kicked a 29 yard field goal to give the Cats a much needed victory. Football 59 RUSTON 7 - Carroll 6 This game gave Ruston its best record since the days of Hoss Garrett. We ended up with an overall record of 9-1 and a district record of 5 wins and 1 loss. This was o tough game, though, as the Bulldogs were determined to end our playoff hopes. But the Cats could not be denied from a victo- ry, as the defense held Carroll to minus yardage in the second half, and after a Micheal Brooks fumble recovery, the offense took it in. Byron Miller made the extra point, which proved to be the margin of victory. The Bearcats had won the district championship!!! C A D D RUSTON 17 - Woodlawn 16 After a week off the Bearcats stormed into the regional playoffs with a game against the Woodlawn Knights. lt was a game that will not be soon forgotten, as the Cats showed what they were made of by surviving two overtimes to defeat the stubborn Knights. Christopher Scottled the way by rushing for more than 200 yards. lt was one of his better nights of the year, in which he ran for more than 1,000 yards. At the end of regulation time the score was tied at ten all. Both teams could not put the ball over the goalline in the first OT, but in the second overtime period it was a different story. Wood- lawn scored first, but missed their ex- tra point. The Cats now saw their chance for a victory. We scored, and then Byron Miller put the extra point through the uprights to give Ruston the right to move one step closer to a chance at the state championship. Win Or Lose - l'd Rather Be A Bearcat!! ,He 4' 'Wet W 'lf some ..:.s.gl'1vru RUSTON 7 - Covington 51 It was like a nightmare. The Cats had come upon Covington when they could do no wrong and the Cats could do nothing right. lt was a bitter end to a near perfect season. Covington scored almost at will, while the Bearcat offense fluttered the whole night. Even our proud Crunch Bunch could not stop the powerful Cov- ington running backs from running up and down the field. The Cats had come so close to not be able to roam in the Dome, but the Resume staff would like to ex- press our congratulations for a fine season, and also give our thanks to a great team, who for thirteen weeks gave the student body at Ruston High something to be proud of. Everyone at R.H.S. will remember the 1961 Bearcats with pride and love. RUSTON 16 - Opelousas 13 The CA T5 traveled to South Lou- isiana for their quarterfinal mat- chup against a lightning-quick Opelousas team. The Bearcats scored quickly, jumping out to a 16 to O lead before the Tigers knew what hit them. Opelousas came back and scored 13 points before the half was over. The second half belonged to the defenses as nei- ther team could move the ball ef- fectively.
