We can look at RHS with a sense of pride in its beautiful building and attractive and well-kept grounds. The superior conduct in all phases of school, athletic, and social life adds to the dignity that we uphold. ,z ,ci 'Q 'C , 5 HHS fs People RHS is people-many people in all differ- ent moods: shy, thoughtful, dreamy, in- quisitive, taciturn, happy, sad, but it is mostly people so enthusiastic with life that they find there is never quite enough time to do everything they want to do. All the things they want to do make up RHS too-the activities, scholastic, athletic, and social. RHS students can be counted on to do their best in all these activities with the help and guidance of our faculty around which our school revolves. v ,H , i V I n r l a l I i I A My fy Our Zfreward RHS is ours. We havemade it ours by spending many memorable moments which led into days, weeks, and finally years in its classrooms. We feel that RHS has become a part of us and we are a part of RHS through the activities participated in here. By the time we are seniors, we realize ,that RHS has a per- sonality all its own. , W V . This year we have watched RHS grow physically by beautiful additions out buildings, and we have seen it expand its hospitality to many new students. Several new faculty members have been welcomed into our school familyg as several have sadly bid farewell. fi V ' Many firsts have octurrecl thisiyear for freshmeng their first jamboreeg their first Homecoming gameg their first pep meeting, their :gk first class elections, and their first Stunt Night. Forfsteniors, however, last occasions have been attendedag, their last football dance, their last basketball lgamejitheir last Junior- Senior Promg their last days all together as one class. No matter whether this year 'i at RHS has been . L. Seegers, Supervisor of Attendance and Transporta- tiong and the twelve members of the Lincoln Parish School Board. The board is the policy-making body for our schools in Lincoln Parish. As a result of our school boards combined effort, citizens may expect to find in the Ruston district better teachers, new buildings and modern additions, more classrooms, and an all-around better school program. HANCHEY Principal The duties of a high school principal seem endless, as they really are. Wfe are fortunate to have Mr. Hanchey for our principal because he is so competent in carrying out the jobs that must be done to keep Ruston High running smoothly. His job begins before school in the summer when he starts working out the schedules for students for the coming year. This not only includes assigning the students the hours they will take a subject, but also arranging it so that the teachers will have as evenly distributed a load of students as possible. Mr. Hanchey must also be a businessman, able to run the business of RHS well. As far as this goes, he does have the help of Mrs. Kavanaugh, our book- keeper, and his secretary, Mrs. Gullatt. The tasks such as lunchroom reports, attendance records, and needed supply lists, must be handled by Mr. Hanchey. Of course the major duty of Mr. Hanchey is to see that the student body benefits from their attendance at RHS. At times he enlists the help of Mrs. Russell, our guidance counselor. It is always apparent that Mr. Hanchey has the students' needs and abilities foremost in his work. That is why we at RHS are so fortunate to have such a man as he for our principal. Offke Stay ,4 21 fudcufs and Zzculfy Mr. Peoples might be described as Mr. Hanchey's right hand man. As assistant principal, he works with Mr. Hanchey in carrying on the business of the school. He is not just a voice over the public address system, or the man to see for an excused absence or the inevitable unexcused tardy. Rather he is an energetic worker for all our school projects and we are all especially appreciative of his work as sponsor of the Student Council. And should anyone need enlightening on the marvels of our demo- cratic America, let him take American history under the popular Mr. Peoples. Wfithout Mrs. Gullatt, all the work of Mr. Hanchey and Mr. Peoples would be in vain, Someone has to type, deliver, and edit the work of the office. Mrs. Gullatt is a capable secretary whom we are sure the school could not function without. Should a student-need help in deciding on his curriculum, future vocation, or per- haps a personality problem, Mrs. Russell is the one to see. She also carries out the testing program for the school, such as the National Merit Scholarship Test, the in- telligence tests, etc. We appreciate Mrs. Russell's work with any student who asks for it. The upkeep of a building as large as RHS is a full-time job for our custodians and maids. Without their continuous efforts to keep our school clean and attractive, we could not be as proud of the appearance of our school. The kitchen staff deserve a special thank-you from the student body for providing wholesome, hot lunches. Students seldom realize the planning that must go into preparing good lunches, and the time spent in pre- paring the meals. They begin work around seven in the morning, and don't leave work until all is clean and ready for the next mornings i , .,, .L f, A 5 f S .. -t - ,,,,, f. 1 V MQ .-5 vi ' 'E I ,,.w ' fw f rf-7fw L'f '-I Q FQWSQQA, ,,ggg4:f:,fv:,:,9Jzg i'uN YrQtvw4 ,sfy,?,.,h 5 1.?,,w 7 . No two human beings are alike, and since teachers are human beings, neither are they alike in their teaching methods. This makes the six-hour school day varied and interesting. Wife at RHS are grate- ful to have teachers who are concerned about us, and who are eager to help us with our problems. Not only does our faculty guide the student body in the class- room, but in the extra-curricular activities as well. Somehow the teachers find time to sponsor organizations, classes, and worth- while projects. Many a student has found, after working with a teacher in some phase of schoolwork, that the teachers at RHS MR. OSCAR P. BARNES Band MR. HUBERT E. BELISLE MRS. It is almost impossible to adequately express our gratitude our teachers for their time and effort in teaching us. Perhaps the best way each of us can thank our teachers is by our actions toward them. This year let's all strive to be more courteous to our teachers, more considerate of their crowded schedules, and more conscientious in our schoolwork. Let's also take advantage of the opportunities for learning our teachers provide, and form good study habits. If we do all this, not only will our teachers feel that their Work is worthwhile, but we find that we have Obtained knowledge that will be useful to us for the rest of our lives. MRS. It is the end of our high school career, and the beginning of life as adults with the wonderful background our high school has given us. A senior must watch as the underclassmen assume responsibilities in the school that he once had, and yet is happy that he can look back and see that he contributed to the growth of Rus- ton High. Although seniors are eager for graduation, they are also hesitant to leave the school where friends, 'both student and faculty, have been made, and where they found that learning is fun, As seniors, we realize with a sad feeling in our hearts that we will be doing everything for the last time this year: our last Pepette trip, our last football game, our final basketball game, our last pep meeting as a student of Ruston High. We are going to miss all the fun and the joys of our high school days, but we are eager to have our hand at the future. The world is ours! We are ready to face the world of tomorrow, our world. As students move out into society, they will all make their contributions to the world we live in. Much of their success in their future life can be traced to the development of their charac- ter, intellect, and fellowship at their alma mater, Ruston High School. Perkins, Mr. Oscar Barnes Our freshman class is the largest class to ever enter Ruston High School. We have enjoyed going to our first Homecoming Dance, Spring Formal, Twirp Week, junior Hi-Fi Follies, Stunt Night, and Jamboree. We've enjoyed going to pep meet- ings, sports events, and assemblies. Many of the freshmen participated in these and other activities. During the year we have had in- teresting and informative homeroom programs. Among these were units on communism, personality, and civil defense. To become part of RHS gives one a special and indefinable feeling. Although it has been hard at times to adjust to the newness of RHS, we have throughly enjoyed our freshman year and look forward to our sophomore year. Tell me the answer, quirk! RHS Student Directory The Student Council of 1962-65 was headed by jackson Thigpen, presidentg Marijon Hinton, vice-presidentg Mike Wells, secretaryg Dot Kirby, treasurerg Wesley Irby, parliamentariang and Carroll Cathey, sergeant-at-arms. These officers led the elected homeroom representatives in promoting projects to benefit the student body. The Council worked with and through the student body in many worthwhile projects. The first project of the Student Council is the football ad drive and the publication of the programs. With the IOZQ profit earned from the ads, and small profits earned from the sell of the popular student directories and Bear- cat football pennants, the Council instigates its projects. Evidence of work done by this year's Council can be seen at the football stadium and in the basketball gym where Bearcat heads show that RHS is the home of the Bearcat. Mike Wells and Mary Ridley were the artists of this project. Mary will also draw a Bearcat coat of arms to be placed in the entrance hall of the building. The state basketball pictures were placed in the halls by Council members. The social activities sponsored by the Council included the freshman dance, Twirp Week, and the Homecoming tea, parade, assembly, and dance. The Honor Code was continued and emphasized. Better assemblies than ever were presented, The Save the Children Federation drive was carried out successfully and the mountain children received the clothes collected. The Good Cheer boxes for food and clothing and a faculty versus student volleyball game was held to raise money for the drive. Recognition of outstanding students came through Student Teacher Day and an election by the Council of a Citizen of the Month. The Student Council has tried to serve you, the student body. We hope you are well satisfied. 75 Hozmcil Kamplsfss Many Projects Student Council elections Our President Bearcat head in Gym Student Teacher Day Twirp Week Dance Homecoming Parade Quill and Sem!! kvcoguzkes fl7llI'l'lllH5f5 Mrs. Lou May, Spozzmf Donna Afeman Melinda Allen Lynda Brooks Mymie Caldwell Gayle Carter Camille Duchesne Tommy Ford James Hatch Margie Hays Kathleen Higgs Marijon Hinton Bob Holladay Mary Belle Kirkland Charles Lewis Darlene Mitchell Mary Ridley Sandra Selle Anita Shadow Gregory Stone Allen Tuten Michaela Wells Bonita Wforsham Rozanne Wylie Quill and Scroll Society members are pictured following the initiation cere- mony held May 9, 1963. The purpose of the Library Club is to help the members know what library work is like and to serve the school by working in the library. Members work in the library during their study halls and at noon hour. Not only does this give the girls valuable experience, but it is a help to the club's sponsor, Miss Griffin. The Club participated in the Homecoming parade and Stunt Night. They also gave a bake sale to help pay for the year's projects, among which was the Parent Demonstration library project. They also provided refreshments for the members of the National Honor Society and their parents following the honor society assembly. Michaela Wells, Lynda Brooks, Mymie Caldwell, and Bonita Worsham represented RHS at the second session which consisted of eight days at LSU. These students were selected by the teachers on the basic requirements of leadership abilities, initiative, scholar- ship, and personality. Mike and Lynda at state capitol. At Leadership there are five divisions in which stu- dents can enroll. Michaela enrolled in Yearbook. Bonita in Newspaper, and Lynda and Mymie in Speech. These students all profited from the con- ference and learned many things which they have applied throughout the school year. Delegates Cake Z7rteeris Seat in feuisiaua Geeermtzent A high point in every junior's year is the selection by his own class of the delegates to Pelican Girls' State and Pelican Boys' State. These students are elected according to scholarship, school service, leadership qualities, and character traits. The delegates chosen to represent RHS were Margaret Ann Sumrall, Marijon Hinton, jackson Thigpen, and Allen Tuten. Due to previous plans Allen could not attend, but Edwin Koss ably filled his place. Margaret Ann moved away from Ruston to Warmsprings, Georgia, during her senior year, but she did attend State. During the ten days in which the Pelican Staters live on the LSU campus, they learn the fundamentals of local, parish, and state governments by taking part in the elections of the mythical fifty-first state. With the knowledge gained, the Pelican delegates return home ready to take a greater part in civic affairs. Jamboree Queen Mary Hilan Marler Salwar! Occasionally, special pep rallies such as the Burning of the Tiger are held. Assemblies Suferfeining and frzspirefieual All assemblies begin with the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem. The programs have included many fields of in- terest. After the extra point, the Bearcats quickly retaliated on Billy Adney's 2 yard plunge. The PAT failed and the Cats settled down and outrushed and outplayed the Tide through the second and third quarters. The game loosened up during the fourth quarter and both teams scored a TD. Minden scored on a short gainer series, and Adney broke loose for a 32 yard gallop for Ruston's 6 points. Both teams missed their extra points, and the game was decided by the first play of the season. Billy Adney moved the ball well and Taylor looked good. Melvin Shows completed 5 of 11 passes. RUSTON 6 BOSSIER 21 Bossier's battling Bearkats struck with blitzkreig- like strength in the first quarter and scored 21 points. The RHS Cats just were not up for the game and could not manage to rally. They scored one TD near the end of the third quarter which was set up by a 59 yard run straight through the middle by Eddie Taylor. Four plays later, Melvin Shows tossed a pass to Carroll Cathey in the end zone. Final score 21-6. Everett Cathey and Tommy Hilburn looked very good in the line. I44 RUSTON 21 OUACHITA O Ruston wanted a victory and went after one. The Cats went scoreless in the first quarter, but opened up with two T.D.'s in the second quarterg the first one on a pass to Cathey and the other on a short dash by Eddie Taylor, Near the games end, Shows con- nected with Cathey on a 20 yard pass and a score. A new star was made in Wayne Parkman and another sophomore, George Smith, played exceptionally well. Wesley Irby was the headhunter on defense. RUSTON 26 HOMER 7 Melvin Shows gathered in the pigskin on the opening kickoff and raced 85 yards for a touchdown. Minutes later, Wayne Parkman plunged across from the 1 yard line for another, Again RHS scored on a Shows-to-Cathey pass good for 15 yard touch- down. Billy Adney wound up this one-sided game with a 42 yard run for the fourth touchdown. Parkman made 2 for 4 PAT'Sg and Courtney Reed, Wesley Irby, Billy Works, and Lynn Stephens were outstanding on defense. RUSTQN 7 WINNFIELD 0 RHS began district against Winnfield, a determined team who had rather beat Ruston than Neville. The Bearcats were also a determined team who wanted to win district. Ruston dominated the yardage with 139 to 136, but Winnfield took first downs with 7 to 6. Eddie Taylor was the Friday night hero with his 85 yard gallop to paydirt and his stalwart defense. Parkman booted the extra point and did a fine job as linebacker. Tommy Hilburn and Wesley Irby looked good in the line and Bobby jefcoat, 135 pounds of dynamite, was in almost all of the tackles. RUSTON 12 HAYNESVILLE 0 The Cat footballers started the Haynesville game with the Homecoming spirit still in their blood. In the first quarter, the Cats scored on a 2 yard spurt by james Gouedy and a 24 yard pass from Shows to Adney. Throughout the remainder of the game, the Tornado's defense stiffened and remained stubborn by holding the Bearcats to limited yardage, The defense of the Cats held just as stubborn and the 12 points held to win the game. The defensive unit was the outstanding area of the team and deserved great credit. RUSTON 0 JONESBORO 7 Jonesboro was heavily favored over the Bearcats, but you could not tell by the way the Cats played the ballgame. Eddie Taylor looked great in running 19 times for an average of 4.2 yards per carry. Melvin Shows passed 15 times and completed eight. Ruston outgained the Tiger 224 to 215 and led in the first downs by one. Wayne Parkman, Wayne Martin, and jimmy Moore stood out on defense. The breaks of the game went to Jonesboro as did the ballgame. RUSTON 0 NEVILLE 19 RHS went into the Neville game with spirit high after a Beat Neville week highlighted by the annual burning of the Tiger. The Cats' defense held tight the first quarter, but Neville penetrated for a TD in the second quarter. Again our defense tightened and gapped the holes in the line. During the third quarter RHS held Neville and moved the ball effectively for the only time in the game. The Cats made 5 first downs in a row, but Neville reinforced their line and Adney was forced to kick. Melvin Shows looked great at quarterback and Eddie Taylor cracked the line very well, and was tough on defense. RHS didn' make it thie year, but just wait till next year. RUSTON 14 PINEVILLE 13 Pineville came to Ruston ranked third in the state hoping to put the Bearcats down. The Rebels scored first but failed to convert the PAT. After a 27 yard run, Eddie Taylor grabbed a 3 yard pass for a score. Sophomore Wayne Parkman booted the PAT to put the Cats ahead 7 to 6. Later, Pineville's fine runner Lynn Kavanaugh sprinted 59 yards for a TD and also converted the extra point. The third quarter passed without a score and most of the fourth passed likewise. With time running out and Pine- ville leading 13 to 7, the Cats got a break on the 40 yard line and headed south with Adney and Goudey doing the receiving, Taylor and Shows running the power plays. With only seconds left, Shows bulled his way over from 3 yards Out and tied the game. Parkman calmly stepped up to the ball and lifted it straight through the uprights to give the Cats a 14 to 13 lead with time for only one play left. The seconds ticked off and Wayne Parkman became a star. RUSTON 31 JEANA 6 The RHS Bearcats cut the jeana Giants down to size quickly. On the first play from scrimmage Billy Adney broke loose on a 50 yard trornp and got the Cats to moving. From this play, the Cats could not be checked, and they left the field at halftime with comfortable lead of 25-0. During the second half, Coach Garrett began calling on his second and third teams led by Bill jones and Lee Mitchell. The whole team performed great for this important game and all the players were applauded as they entered the Homecoming dance which was reigned over by Queen Dot Kirby. l45 RUSTON 13 WEST MONROE 14 The RHS Bearcats played a brilliant ballgame against the West Monroe Rebels to end their season, but the winning point was unattainable. The Rebels scored quickly and had a 14 point lead at halftime. Ruston came back fighting in the second half and scored their first TD on a 16 yard pass form Shows to Cathey. Shows again zeroed in for a TD with a 4 yard toss to Billy Adney. The failure to register the PAT after the first touchdown was the deciding factor. Eddie Taylor and Melvin Shows did the bulk of carrying the ball and Billy Works did the pass receiving. Wesley Irby, Bobby jefcoat, and Tornmy Hilburn were standouts in the line, Eleven seniors played their last game as Bearcats. These were the following: Wesley Irby, Billy Works, Carroll Cathey, Jimmy Moore. james Gouedy, Bobby jefcoat, jimmy Tait, jimmy Dodds, Tommy Hilburn, Bill Baugh, and Wayne Martin. The Bearcats realizing that things are easier said than done, began to work diligently toward their goal at the beginning of the school year. The team's goal was to add a third championship trophy to the pre- vious collection of state honors. Bearcat roundballers of 1962-65 were comprised of four boys returning from the 1961-62 State Championship team. These boys are as follows: Jackson Thigpen, Carroll Cathey, Jimmy DeMoss, and Reg Cassibry. Then Ruston High was fortunate in receiving an outstanding roundball artist in Lynn Morris, who moved to Ruston this past summer. Rounding out the ten man squad were Bob Holladay, Donny Oxford, Denny Garner, George Stone, and Edwin Koss. Koss saw limited action due to a hand injury and was replaced by Don Dyson. These were the boys to represent Ruston High School on the basketball court. In Class AA sports, District 2-AA usually produces the State Champ for all these sports. Upon this assump- tion, the District 2-AA race in basketball became a mad Scramble for the state playoff berths. Unexpectedly, Neville wound up first in the district race and Ruston was a close second. The Bearcats' winning second in district actually gave them an advantage in securing a berth in the State Tournament. In securing the State Tournament berth, the Cats defeated Minden 60-52 and easily romped Pineville 81-62. These two wins in the playoff qualified the Bearcats to enter the State Tournament in Shreveport. The first test for the Cats was Baker, a familiar foe of the past. The Cats defeated the Buffaloes 60-52 thus clearing the last hurdle to the State Championship game. Unexpectedly, the Bearcats had an off night in the State Championship game. The Bearcats put out a great effort, but the basket seemed to have a lid on it for the two-time Champs. Despite the 64-43 loss to Neville, the Cats brought home the Runner-up Trophy for Class AA. This ended the Bearcats' season with a 19-4 record and another trophy to add to RHS's many. K, .L W. PHILIPS Coach Phillips scheduled as many games as possible for the RHS baseball team before their 2-AA games with Neville. The purpose was to gain game experience and give the players a chance to play together as a team before their crucial games in April. In the first of two district games, the Tigers handed the Cats a 6-1 defeat. The Cats, realizing their backs were to the wall, came through in the clutch in the second district game with a 4-3 victory. The split in the district games brought about a playoff game to determine a district champion. Neville won the toss for the site of the game, but this did not bother the the Cats because they felt confident they could beat them on any diamond they might choose. lourneying to Mon- roe, the Bearcats had only one thing on their mind and that was to beat Neville. Despite the efforts of Coach Phillips and the players, the Cats lost a 3-2 heart-breaker to the Tigers. After the loss in the district playoff game, the curtain was lowered on the baseball season for 1962- 65. In the Cats' regular season, they won 12 games and lost 6. In the 6 losses, 4 were by one run. The infield for almost every game was B. Martin, jimmy Martin, Bobby jefcoat, jackson Thigpen, jimmy DeMoss, Rickey Blackstock, and Curtis Barham behind the plate. The outfielders were Melvin Shows, Edwin Koss, and George Siminton. The pitching staff was made in George Stone, Reg Cassibry, and Jimmy Martin. With the loss of only five seniors, the Bearcat baseball team of 1963 can look forward to another good season. IZ!! S IC-,Niaers Have Saeeee fa! Coach Fred Higginbothm COACH FRIED HIGGINBOTHAM The Bearcat thinclads of 1962-63, as a group, improved steadily with each meet they participated in. During the year, the Bearcats defeated both Neville and Jonesboro-Hodge in different meets. The thinclads have gone to meets all over North Louisiana. The team has run in Shreveport, Monroe, West Monroe, Pineville, and Jonesboro- Hodge. This year's Bearcat track team was an overaverage team. It rose to its heights in the Ruston Invitational Track Meet. Although the team won no meets, this was a successful year in track. The Bearcat thinclads concluded their season with the district track meet in Jonesboro on May 3. Ruston placed third .overall in the meet and four boys qualified for state competition. Lynn Morris went to state in the high jump. Morris has the highest jump of the season with the height of 6 feet 4 inches, Morris also established a new district record withia jump of 6 feet SVZ inches. Mike Edmunds journeyed to state to compete in the javelin. During the season, Edmunds set a new school record with a toss of 182 feet. Rickey Black- stock qualified for the mile run. Blackstock has competed in all the meets this year in the mile run. James Hatch qualified in the 880 yard run and the mile run. Hatch was high point man on fthe team this year with over seventy points. In the state meet, these four boys gave a good account of themselves in their specialty and won QVZ points for the RHS Bearcats. K With many of the Bearcat thinclads returning, these tracksters of the future can look at the records of the past and see that it first takes desire to win and then a supreme effort in their event.
