ALMA MATER F irmly founded, Alma Mater Mother true is she. Here beneath her towering columns Pledge we loyalty. Ruston High, oh, Ruston High We will e'er he true. Sing her praises, speed them onward To the world proclaim. We will always love and cherish, Ruston High School's name. F ORE W ORD ff i., t '4Memories,,' the theme chosen by the staff, is designed to capture your most pleasant thoughts of the year-round activities of students at RHS. During this year, we have become part of the school, and while we have felt responsible in the serious matters pertaining to school life, We feel that RHS,s brighter memories belong to us. ln the fall. the school welcomed us back and introduced us to new classes and teachers. It inspired us to strain our voices and nerves at football games. We have even more remembrances from the winter and spring semesters. Some of RHSVS highlights which stand out are the rush of the semester exams and the rush of Christmas activities that had both students and teachers quite busyg her phe- nomenal basketball season cnded in a trip to State and a victory for the Bearcatsg her many as- semblies-pep assemblies before games, religious, and musical assemblies. And to the Seniors, RHS offered a strange sensation as they participated in activities which would be repeated many times in years to come but of which they would never be a part again. This is our l96l-1962 RIZSLYHIQ. At RHS we love our yearbook because it aids us in preserving the precious memories of these wonderful days. The staff has tried to incorporate in this book details of incidents and ideas that will recall your high school friends and activities. May it bring you many happy memories 1002 RESUME Staff WE CLING TO THE MEMORIES OE Administration Faculty. . . Classes. Organizations . Features. Activities. . Sports. . . Graduation. . We have been sailing calmly, but now we must weigh our anchor and start our voyage toward the goal of our future. The Senior Class is entrusted to uphold the traditions and heritage founded here. Reviewing the past year, we can see that this obligation has-been fulfilled. Great strides have been made in the fields of scholastic attainments, music, debate, athletics, and the activities of the various organizations. Honor and recognition have been repeatedly reaped upon those participating in these endeavors. Each departing senior will have deeply embedded in his mind memories of his high school days. Likewise, the history of Ruston High School will be richer from having known every graduateis experiences. The significance of our high school career will be displayed in the future years. To our teachers and administration, we are most grateful for making our high school years so wholesome and complete. You have not only served as instructors, but as counselors, advisors, and friends. Student teacher day is another school high- light. Student teachers are elected to teach classes. This gives the teachers a rest! We also elect a principal, assistant principal, and secretary to perform the executive duties of the school. Homecoming Parade The Student Council of l96l-62 has sought to accomplish three principal objectives: ill Build each studentis loyalty and pride for his school as well as develop him mentally and morally. l'2l Bring about a closer relationship he- tween the students and faculty. 13? For the Student Council to work closer in conjunction with the student body through use of its homeroom representatives. The Student Council sponsors many varied activities throughout the year to promote school spirit and better student body coopera- tion. ...af ...M As a student of RHS, I, - .. A , in order to improve the qualities of my personal life and those of my school, will endeavor: 1. To establish a. character built upon honesty, intelligence, and dependability. 2. To show respect for my teachers and fellow students, and myself. 3. To do my part in taking care of school property and showing respect for the belongings of others. 4. To conduct myself in a proper manner in the everyday life of my school as well as at its social and athletic events. 5. To build lasting friendships by practicing unseliish- ness and loyalty. . y 6. To show Christian principles in the many phases of my school life. 215 Well 35 ill my family life' Ruston High School Honor Code Each year the freshmen are presented with honor cards. A Student Council representa- tive takes them to all freshman home rooms and explains the meaning of our honor system at Ruston High School. When a student signs this card, he pledges himself to improve the qualities of his personal life and those of his school. This year the council has done an excep- tional job of presenting worthwhile and in- formative assemblies to the student body. This has been one of their most appreciated activities of the year. During the school year the council does many things to help promote school spirit for the football games. The first of these projects is to sell ads for the football programs. Later on they sponsor the homecoming dance after the game. For this important game they also sell Bearcat pennant pins to booster Bearcat spirit. A former RHS student speaks at assembly. Bearcat Directory When can girls ask boys for dates? TWIRP WEEK! This is another council- sponsored activity. The girls ask boys for the dates, pay their way, and go after them for the date. It is a complete reverse of the normal boy-girl proceedings and a lot of fun. At the Twirp dance a Mr. and Miss Twirp are presentedg these are elected by the Stu- dent Council. Ruston High School is extremely fortunate to have such a hard working, energetic coun- cil, and we thank them for all their services. Sponsored by the council this year to help the needy were two drives: the Good Cheer Drive and Save the Childrens Federation Clothing Drive. RHS has its own Bearcat directory. This book consisting of the names, addresses, phone numbers, and classifications of all Ruston High students, as well as the teachers, is sold by the Council. Mr. and Miss TWIRP-Mary Nell Dennig and Billy Weatlierbsy. tuclent Council Projects The Student Council's first project each year is to lay out the ads in the football program and to collect the money for these ads. The council receives ten per cent of the money it collects, and this is actually our only designated form of a fund raising project. Probably the one largest event sponsored by the council annually is homecoming. We all know what homecoming is and what it involves. There are many different phases of homecoming, including the down- town parade, tea, assembly, and dance. For the past few years the Student Council has been sponsoring very Worthwhile campaigns. This year was no exception. A Good Cheer Drive was held before the Christmas holidays and just recently a Save the Children Federation Clothing Drive was conducted. The entire student body should be commended for the way in which you responded to both of these drives. As a service to the school the council 1: rinted its fourth edition of the RHS student directory and sold 450 copies to students. Bearcat pins were also sold to promote school spirit in athletic contests. The council has made a concerted effort to make better use of our alice. A committee was appointed and dances were publicized and promoted to a greater degree. There was a KNOE Canteen Record Hop and a spring dance featuring a band. A new projectionist club is being organized to benefit the school. It is designed to have students who can operate the projectors scattered throughout the classrooms. This club will not officially take in members until next year, as only the ground work has been laid out thus far. The Student Council has worked very diligently in planning assemblies through an assembly committee composed of five students and five faculty members. This committee has tried to plan assemblies which would be interesting and informative. They have ranged from school spirit and communism assemblies to musical and inspirational ones. At present, the Student Council is considering building a billboard on the school campus. This billboard will be similar to the one La. Tech has located on the Shreveport highway. Other events the Student Council has been responsible for are Student teacher day, Twirp Week, and the hanging of State Championship pictures in the hall. 'A successful workday started the year to provide money for many projects. One Saturday was devoted for doing odd jobs around Ruston to raise funds. The club entered a float in the class A division of the homecoming parade. A large UTweedy Birdw in a cage with the words MI see a Bearcat Victory , was the theme. During the football season. Key Club members not playing ball served as ushers. After the games, milk was provided for everyone attending the homecoming dance at the 'crecfi Two Key Clubbers were also in charge of the flag raising at the start of each game. As the basketball season came on, the Key Club set up the concession stand just outside the gym. Ad- ditional finances were added to the treasury by selling cokes and candy. The annual appreciation banquet was held in January honoring teachers, school leaders, and parents of Key Ctubbers. The event was held in the school cafeteria. Two new awards were given at this banquet. One, a plaque, gave special recognition to a senior citizen of Ruston. The person to receive this award, which will be presented annually in the future, was Mr. H. E. Townsend, long-time principal at Ruston High School. The second award was given to Elizabeth Mooney, who was elected as the Club Sweetheart. The following month The Key Club sponsored its annual Stunt Night. Many of the clubs and student groups presented skits before nearly one thousand viewers. Prizes were awarded the best three stunts. The Debate Club took top honors. This was the largest attendance and most successful of all preceding stunt nights. On April Fool's Day few Key Clubbers could be seen in Ruston. Twenty-four members had gone to Biloxi to the District Convention. Everyone had a great time attending the various meetings, contest, and visiting the sites around Biloxi. A delicious sea food banquet closed the convention. Wesley Irby was installed as one of the Lieutenant Governors at the closing banquet. The Key Club has been working jointly with the Industrial Arts Club on speakers stands for the teachers in high school. The materials were purchased by the Key Club and the stands were assembled by the Industrial Arts Club. The last project of this year's club was the annual painting of the tennis courts. A bright orange now marks the lines at the courts. The club held its annual party at the '6Rec', which was decorated according to the theme, South Sea Island. The party was considered the best of the year. Once each month the Key Club holds an outside meeting at Ted,s Cafe. A guest speaker is invited to each dinner. The- club also designates one Sunday of each month as Key Club Sunday. The Key Clubbers visit the different churches to which various members belong. of 2: S-5sse:'t:sff'5f' -fs . Hard work, sweat, aches, and sore muscles all went into preparation. On September l came their chance at the annual Lions Club Jamboree. They showed that their training, work, and sweat had paid off by stomping Jonesboro- Hodge Tigers 6'O. This was the beginning of another Bearcat football season. . tarting Baclcfield L. to R.: M. Shows, K. Monroe, C. Kir- by, D. McKenzie. Seasonis Summary BUSTON 26-MINDEN 6 The Bearcats opened their ill-fated season with a sensational victory over the Minden Crimson Tide. Melvin Shows was the hackfield standout, hoth on the defense and on the offense, where he ran and passed like a seasoned pro. The line did a great job, with Vlfayne '4lVloose7' Gray making most ofthe tackles. The first Bearcat touchdown came on the first play of the game. when Shows made a heautiful 60 yard run to payclirt. Nlinrlen immediately retaliated with their only touchdown of the game. Shows connected three through the air, two to Bahh and one to Adney, to hring the final score to 26-6. The Bearcats scored to the top spot in Class AA standings after their victory over Minden. RUSTON 6-BOSSIER CITY 31 The Bearcats met Bossier here playing a courageous up-hill battle down to the closing whistle. However, the fired up AAA underdogs dominated the game from the start. Towards the end of a 40 yard sustained drive, Charles Kirby went over from the one yard line for Buston's only score. Mike Capshaw was Bustonis star in the line along with the playing of guards, J. W. Foster and James Gouedy. Wesleyf lrhy was in on most of the tackles along with Billy Bay Adney and Andy Clark. Bustonis backfield was bottled up most of the game, hut now and then fullhacks Eddie Taylor and Charles Kirby were ahle to pick up yardage. The final score was Ruston 6-Bossier City 31. RUSTON 0-OUACHITA 6 The Bearcats played three quarters on even terms with AAA Ouachita until Billy Darden of Ouachita inter- cepted one of Melvin Shows' passes and streaked fl0 yards to the five yard line. Buhher Via, Ouachitals full- back, blasted through on the lirst play from scrimmage for the only TD of the game. ln the first half Huston outgained Ouachita'in yardage. Tommy Parker's kicking was a feature of the game, averaging 36.5 yards per kick. RUSTON 13-HOMER 13 The Bearcats moved the ball in championship form during the first half of the game. Billy Adney scored on a 19-yard run to put the Bearcats ahead at the half. Both teams battled on even terms during the 2nd and 3rd quarters, but at the start of the ll-th, Mike Capshaw, playing one of his best games of the season, blocked a Homer punt on the four yard line and on the 2nd play, Charles Kirby plunged for Bustonls 2nd TD. Buston's 13 to 6 score looked like it would stand up but the Homer Pelicans resorted to a passing game and managed to take advantage of a deflected pass for a 31-yard TD. Homer's quar- terback ran for the extra point to knot the game at 13-13. RUSTON 0-NEVILLE 41 The fast and furious Tigers of Neville wrapped up a successful defense of their district 2-AA title by completely routing arch rival Ruston. Poor tackling by the Bearcats made the Tigers look like a pro team. Striking with lightning swiftness, the Tigers scored four touchdowns in the opening quarter for a quick 27-0 lead. Neville added seven more points in the 2nd quarter for a 3-1-0 halftime advantage, then pushed over a final seven in the last period. RUSTON 26-JENA 13 The Bearcats sparked to life against Jena and broke into the winning column with an impressive 26-13 win over the Giants. Jena took the lead in the first quarter with a 40-yard touchdown run, but the Bearcats came back in the 2nd quarter with Melvin Shows making a 30-yard run to pay dirt and a 5-yard plunge to make the score 14-7. Shows and Kirby each scored a TD in the 2nd half. Charles Kirby played the best game of his high school career and Coach 4'Moose7' Phillipis line was in rare form. BUSTON 14fHAYNESV1LLE 0 Melvin Shows paced Ruston to a 14-0 victory over ,ul-1... Haynesvillels Tornadoes. In the opening quarter, Shows set up the first score by racing 48 yards to the Tornadoes, two-yard line. Charles Kirby plunged over from the touchdown seconds later and Andy Clark kicked the point after. Shows climaxed a 60-yard drive in the 3rd period with a 3-yard run. Clark again converted. Haynesville moved inside the Ruston 15 in the second period. However, that drive was stopped by Ruston defense. RUSTON 7-JONESBORO-HODGE 19 Two Class AA teams battled on even terms for two quarters but in the 3rd quarter J-H broke through with smashing short dashes that paved the way for two touchdowns. Buston's TD came in the 3rd quarter after a ll-0-yard run by Shows brought the ball to the one-yard line. Shows went over for a TD and Andy Clark kicked for the extra point. With only one second left I-H swept around for a 3rd touchdown. RUSTON 0-WEST MONROE 4:1 The powerful Rebels completely dominated the game. After starting off slowly, W. Monroe struck for 20 points in the 2nd quarter. ln the 3rd period, the Bearcats put together their only scoring threat with a drive from their 36 to the Bebel's 23. Shows sparked the drive and Kirby, Adney, and Monroe chipped in with valuable yardage. This season the Bearcats won three games, lost six, and tied one. Though we were not so fortunate in the won-lost column, we still had a successful year. Winning a game is important, but there are other factors just as important. The turn out for home games was better than it has been in over ten years. Bearcat spirit ran high and good sportsman- ship was always present. We are proud of our 1961 Bearcat football team and are looking forward eagerly to a successful season this next fall. II7 if All-District vi g. Coach Denman Garner, who was voted HCoach of the Year for Class AA, works with each boy helping him develop into a topnotch ball player. When you add up a group of top-notch boys, the sum is a great team and this is what we have at Ruston High. During the season the team won 32 games and lost only 2, one of these to Natchitoches, 61-475 and the other to Jonesboro, 70-61. They attended the tournaments at Bastrop, Dubach, and Ringgold, bringing back first place trophies for all three. ln the semi-finals of the state Championship tourna- ment they beat Lee High, 68-58, and then defeated Natchitoches, 69-46, to win a beautiful State Championship trophy and a Championship title to add to their fast growing collection.
