We ap- preciate the determination she has shown. Next year a new teacher will take Miss Johnson's place as head of the RESUME, but to us, the student body of Ruston High School, Miss Johnson will always be remembered as our sponsor of the yearbook. With much pride and grati- tude, we dedicate our thirteenth copy of the Ruston High School RESUME to Miss Ruth Johnson, who has been our dedicated sponsor for all thirteen volumes. In nineteen hundred forty-three when Miss Johnson came to Rus- ton High, there was no yearbook. From the moment she began teaching mathematics, she began to talk to the necessary people about having a yearbook. Finally in nineteen hundred forty-eight Miss Johnson sponsored the first edition of the RESUME. Zrrewvrd Mr. lfustan J-lzylr Kames nf,4gc Twenty-one years ago our present school building was completed. We, the annual staff, have named the building Mr. Ruston High for this issue of the Resume. Thus, Mr. Ruston High was born twenty-one years ago. He has grown from an infancy served by twenty-two teachers and instructing five hundred and sixty-eight students to a full grown adult serving approximately five hundred and twenty families. He has broadened his field of learning and now offers fifty dif- ferent courses. Mr. Ruston High is known all over the state for his academic achievements. Fun- loving, too, he has time for extracurricular activities which broaden his outlook on life and aid his physical development. All these combined are the character of Ruston High School, the character of its students. Surrounded by this character we, the students, fulfill our utmost aims to develop a worthy code of living, to be responsible citizens, to achieve satisfying human relationships, to learn to live aesthetically, and to succeed in our life's work. Many of our teachers hold their masters' degrees. The suc- cess or failure of Ruston High largely depends upon the actions of Mr. Hanchey. He is responsible for everything that happens at our school. We certainly appreciate his co-operation with the activities planned by different groups in our school. At all hours of the day, Mr. Hanchey can be found in his office working on something for the betterment of the school. One of his most important proi- ects was the zoning of parking on our campus. Zones were set up for the faculty, buses, students staying on the campus at noon. Although this plan has only been effec- tive for a few weeks, it has helped with traffic congestion considerably. Mr. Hanchey is working continuously to make our school better. We owe him more than any one student can realize for he is the leader of our school. MRS. BOB CARLILE Secretary Assistant Principal MRS. The vocal department features the choir, glee clubs, and smaller groups. They participate in festivals, concerts for other schools, and assemblies held in our own school. The instrumental music is separated into the concert and marching bands. They demonstrate precision marching during foot- ball season and fine instrumental music at all times of the year. These two groups pro- vide enioyable entertainment for the public and the students throughout the year. Each year our library has a greater sup- ply of materials and references with which to work. This progress in the school library is due to the co-operation of the teachers, administrators, librarian, , and students. The library is the foundation for all the subjects that are taught since infor- mation on any subiect may be found there. We, the Ruston High Students, have learned to appreciate our fine li- brary. 9 MISS MARTHA MRS, L. J. GARRETT MRS. Literature, spelling, and grammar are stressed in all the English classes. Novels are studied and enjoyed by all students. ' A new feature in our cur- riculum is our speech depart- ment. It offers first year speech for those interested in improving their public speak- ing, reading and poetry inter- pretation. Debating is the main feat- ure of second year speech which may be taken three years. Our very active debate squad, a member of the La. Speech League, provides op- portunity for continued im- provement as a speaker and a writer. Journalistic k n ow-h o w and experience are available through work on the two pub- lications, the Resume and the Chatterbox. Thus, RHS provides a well- rounded base for all students. The courses offered in this varied field are civics, geography, American History, Americanism vs. Communism, economics, sociology, and general history. Geography provides a solid foundation in the geographical features of the world. Many things about our state, federal, and local gov- ernments and our rights and duties as citizens are taught in civics. The history of the United States is discussed in detail in the American History classes. A new part of our curriculum this year was the corn- parison of democratic life and socialistic life in Ameri- canism Vs. Communism. The development of the entire world is covered in general history. Economics is a vital and interesting course offered to seniors. It prepares them for life on their own. Sociology, offered the second semester of the senior year, ex- plores social behavior patterns and laws and enables us to understand other people as well as ourselves. The strength of a nation depends upon the quality of its homes. The Homemaking Department offers girls a complete course in homemaking. Child care, home management, interior dec- oration and nutrition are included with the semester work in cooking and in sewing. A well equipped building is an important part. Mechanical drawing, shop and agri- cultural courses are available to the boys. These courses prepare' the Rus- ton High boys for iobs requiring me- chanical skills or agricultural knowl- edge. Gee, we hope it works. Here at Ruston High the sci- ence department offers gen- eral science, biology, chemis- try, and physics. These sub- iects offer a good background for future study in scientific fields. Many Ruston High graduates pursue the field of science in college. And the cow lumped over the moon. For the college bound senior or career minded student, the business education courses provide plenty of practical ex- perience. Business courses are taught so that the students learn things that would be important to them in the business world. Bookkeeping, typing, and shorthand are included in the business program. These courses are very helpful to the student not only at work but in everyday life. Ruston High graduates can get office iobs because of these courses. Mrs. Booles doesn't seem to be watching Elassfs There is a distinct difference between a student entering Ruston High as a freshman ancl one leaving as a senior. Students learn what can be taught from books along with the principals of getting along with a large number of people. The freshman, sophomore, and iunior years are the stepping stones to that great day when you and, your classmates become seniors. Each stage is full of enioyment and work that will never be forgotten. The pictures on this page show the candidates and the former president giving their campaign speeches. This year many new ideas were used in the campaigning and varied approaches, too-from quiet and dignified to active and sensational. Our deepest gratitude goes to her because of her continuous work with us, her lasting patience and her devotion to the students of RHS. To Mr. Hanchey who helped us with operating expenses to provide a band for the Twirp Week Dance and helped us with the Bobo Show. To Mr. Barnes and the band in providing buglers for the flag raising and lowering ceremonies, and especially to Lena Gay Colvin and Tommy Thomas who served repeatedly and well. To Miss Lewis and her Chatterbox staff in affording us such fine coverage of our proiects and for the excellent editorials by Doris Jiles urging student cooperation. To Mrs. Booles for designing and mimeographing our Homecoming programs. To Mrs. Turnbow for planning the presentation of the court of Homecoming. To all the teachers who helped us in such proiects as collecting cans of food and clothing, and in taking class time for the year's activities such as voting. To Mike Wells for her artistry in designing and to Peggy Roberts for her skill in sewing our beautiful Bearcat banner, now another great bit of RHS tradition. To Mary Esther Lewis and Peggy Roberts for their many hours of typing to produce the student directory. To the merchants and people of Ruston who cooperated with the council in every possible way to make RHS a better high school. To all students who, though not official members of student council, contributed their time and effort to insure the success of Homecoming, Flag Day, Good Cheer, Student Council election, etc. To Joel Tellinghuisen, our student body president, for his work and leadership which has helped to make our projects so worthwhile. Homecoming brings its assembly, tea, parade, and football game with the presentation of the homecoming court. The Junior-Senior Prom is al- ways fun for the members of both classes. The senior banquet is filled with memories during the reading of the class will and prophecy. Several iuniors attend the leadership conference and Peli- can Boys' and Girls' State during the summer. These students bring back many interesting and original ideas to share with the entire student body. This year, too, we were visited by the evaluation board and most phases of our school life were highly praised. Miss Nan Hood, Maid Senior, Junior and Senior Beauty, Sub Deb Club, F.F.A. Queen. The Crim- son Tide dominated the first quarter and took the lead with two early touchdowns. The Bearcats fought back led by Ronnie Graham's passing arm, and with just four minutes left in the game, the score read Minden 14 and Ruston 13. Ruston took over the ball and with just seconds re- maining on the clock, Ronnie Graham fired a 20-yard pass to Kenneth Monroe for a never-to-be-forgotten victory. Ruston 7 J-lannfr O A blocked kick recovered on the one-yard enabled the Cats to sneak by a tough Homer eleven by a score of 7-O. The running of Ronnie Graham, and the linework of R. B., Williams and Mike Capshaw were outstanding. Billy Rives was also a defensive stand- out. The Bearcat record was evened at two victories and two losses Ruston 7 Sprzngnzll I4 Costly fumbles enabled the Springhill's Lurnberiacks to defeat Ruston's fighting Bearcats in a stubbornly fought game be- tween two tough football teams. Ruston's only score came when Mike Capshaw picked up a fumble and lumbered 8 yards for the touchdown. The Bearcats again fought all the way, but inadequate bench strength was a deciding factor. Huston O Ouachita I3 Ouchita's Lions, taking advantage of costly Bearcat fumbles and a blocked punt, handed the Cats their 2nd defeat of the young season in a game in which the Cats outgained Ouachita in every category. Ruston I3 Mnnicld I3 Unbeaten Winnfield rallied for two touchdowns to tie Ruston's fumbling Bearcats 13-13. The Bearcats fumbled 6 times-two of them offering the Tigers opportunity to score easy touchdowns. It may be in- teresting to note that Winnfield has never beaten Ruston. kllSf0l1 I3 Neville 39 Up to this game, Neville's Tigers had been un- beaten, unchallenged, and Unscored upon. After the game, they remained unbeaten, but they de- finitely had been challenged and had been scored upon. The fighting Bearcats played a great first half but the superior Tiger bench strength proved to be a decisive factor. The running of Ronnie Graham was tremendous, but the Tigers were iust overpowering. Wait till next year. Ruston I9 fanesbara 20 Jonesboros victory starved Tigers defeated the heavily favored Bearcats in a surprising upset in a 2-AA tilt. Ruston trailing 20-7 fought back for two touchdowns, but the Tigers were iust too fired up. Ronnie Graham and Paul Richardson accounted for most of Ruston's 300 yards rushing, but even the tremendous running of Graham could not stop the win-hungry Tigers. The loss dropped Ruston's record to 4-4-1. Ruston 35 jenn I3 Ruston completed a very successful homecoming with their stun- ning 35-l3 victory over Jena's Giants. Coach Garrett played his bench and the Giants scored only against Bearcat reserves. Left- half Paul Richardson, although playing only briefly, was tremend- ous with his swivel-hip running. Richardson had scored 3 quick touchdowns before Jena ever got into the game. lfustan 27 jfaynesvillc O The Bearcats showed tremendous offensive and defensive ability in their one-sided 27-0 victory over the Haynesville Golden Tornados. The Bearcat line stopped Haynesville cold as they al- lowed only l9 yards to the Tornado. It was a district game. leusian I3 Wes! ,Munras I9 For twenty Bearcat Seniors, this loss was a heart-breaker. The Bearcats had played tremendously, but the tough Rebels had a large bench to pick from. The tired Bearcats never gave up as Ronnie tried desperately for the winning marker, but a pass inter- ception ended all hope. Congratulations to a group of hard-fight- ing boys and their coaches for a well-played year. We'll be looking for a great team next year. There are many Things that we should remember about this year. The night The Bearcats snapped RinggoId's victory string at 44. The night the Bearcats gained revenge over Natchitoches for an earlier season defeat, but most of all, the playoff games and the state tournament. The Bearcats swept past North Caddo in their first playoff game by a score of 84-55, but then came one of the toughest games of The year. With the support of hundreds of Rustonites, the Bearcats defeated Menard High School 65-61 in one of the most thrilling games ever witnessed by spectators. At the State Tournament, the Bearcats were overpowering, led by Jerry Hood and Charles Shuffield offensively, they slaughtered highly rated Baker 80-36, and then crushed old rival Natchitoches by a score of 63-44. The Bearcats of 1960-61 were called the most powerful team in the state by sportswriters and rightly so, for in our hearts they will always be the best Team we know.
