HOSS GARRETT I Coach Head Athletic Director and Football Coach R. W. MOOSE PHILLIPS Coach Assistant Football and Track Coach A Synopsis of the I953 Season RUSTON HIGH SCHOOL BEARCATS With the coming of the 1953 season, came a period of extreme anxiety in the Bearcat camp. Behind lay two of the most success- ful years any high school team could desire. The Bearcats had won twenty-four of their last twenty-five ball games, and had gone through two regular seasons without a defeat. A team blessed with such success can expect to be the chief target for every rival they encounter. The team destined to face such a season was composed mostly of rookies who were playing varsity ball for their first time. However, they had what every coach loves-a willingness to learn and a desire to play. With such a group the old masters of the game, Coaches Garrett and Phillips, set out to put together a FINAL INSTRUCTIONS A ROUGH NIGHT FOR THE BEARCATS For the pessimists and the drugstore cowboys Ruston's en- counter with Class B Arcadia was a hay day. The Cats looked anything but impressive in their I3-O victory over the Hornets at Arcadia. Lack of teamwork was very evident, and it became plain that a great deal of work would have to be done if the Hoss men were to make another outstanding record in high school football. Many fans predicted that we would do well to win half of our games this year. Several times during the game the Bearcats threatened to score and failed. To some, this signified only a load night for the Bear- cats, but others chose to paint a much more dismal picture. Nearly all the fans were a little disturbed about our chances with Haynes- ville's Golden Tornado next Friday night. team that Ruston fans could be proud of. KENNEDY AROUND END! AND THEN WE WOKE UP THERE'S BABY ! The same eleven men who played Arcadia a week before were an entirely different team when they came on the field in Haynes- ville. In a carefully planned week of workouts the old masters had ironed out many of the flaws that showed up in the Bear- cats at their first outing. A recovered fumble set the stage for one of the biggest upsets in high school football as the Cats defeated the AA Haynesville Golden Tornado 6-0. The lone six points scored by the Cats came at the end of a forty yard sustained drive which was the only drive mustered by either team in the entire course of the game. Oren Barmore completed a pass to Ben James on the 12 yard line to set up the score. Three plays later Bill Smith made the score 6-0, and that was enough for the Bearcats to win! BEARCATS TUNE UP The Bearcats defeated Ouachita 13-O to chalk up their second win over double A competition during the 53 campaign. For the Cats', the Lions' game was a little final tuning up before class A competition began. The Ruston eleven played heads up football against the Lions, and it was this factor that made the victory possible. Brilliant Bearcat halfback Bill Smith scored the six points of the game in the second period when he intercepted a pass on the Lions' 3 yard line. Alexander's kick split the uprights and gave Ruston a 7 point advantage. Ruston's other six points came when Ben James blocked a Lion punt and covered it behind the Ouachita goal line. WE RCLLED BY THE REBELS ln their first district 2-A contest of the year the Cats notched their fourth win by whipping Pineville 20-O. The Bearcats managed to keep their Unscored on record by reventing Pineville from crossing their goal line in four hard P fought quarters. Bill Smith scored the initial touchdown early in the first quarter to climax a 69 yard drive by the Cats offensive machine. The second score came after successive drives by Bill Smith and Billy Delony. lt was Smith again who carried the mail into paydirt from eighteen yards out. The third and final touchdown was set up by an intercepted pass which carried the Bearcats deep into Rebel territory. It was Billy Delony this time who sneaked over to add six more points to the Bearcats total. HOMER HUMBLED The Cats coasted to an easy 27-6 victory over Homer for their fifth consecutive win. However, in the process the Bearcats un- scored on record was smashed when Rowe Goodwin scored the first six points of the '54 season against the strong defensive machine that Ruston was noted for all season. 205 pound tackle Tommy Hinton set up the first Ruston score early in the first quarter when he covered a Pelican fumble on the PEL's 14 yard line. Bryant Kennedy took advantage of this set up and scored on the very next play. Still in the first quarter, Ralph Delony added another tally to climax a long drive by the entire Bearcat backfield. In the second half a touchdown by Barmore on the ground, and a pass from Kennedy to Eaves gave the CATS their four touchdowns for the night. HOMECOMING Reigning over the gridiron climax to a memorable Homecom- ing Day was Queen Mary Ann McLaurin and her court made up of Dorothy Scarborough, Lynnette Walsworth, Mary Virginia Stovall, Priscilla Heard, and Margaret Ann Riser. The Cats had easy sailing as they trampled the Tigers 26-0. Ruston's touchdowns were contributed by Harold Ferguson, Bill Smith, and Bryant Kennedy with Smith accounting for two. Earl Alexander booted two extra points. The first Ruston score came when Harold Ferguson covered a fumble by Bearcat halfback Bryant Kennedy in Winnfield pay- dirt. The remaining three touchdowns all came as a result of fumbles by Winnfield backs. All the Bearcat reserves were given a chance to show their ability during the last quarter of the game. WE EASED BY NEVILLE D The Ruston Bearcats scored early in their battle with Neville once in the first and second periods. They then had to fight off a late air barrage by Neville to defeat the Tigers 13-6. Both Ruston touchdowns were scored by 150 lb. right half- back, Ralph Delony. Both of his runs were beautiful left end sweeps. Bill Smith, Tommy Hinton, Billy Delony, Middleton Shir- ley, and Ben James put on a display of precision blocking to cut down opposition defenders on both of Delony's runs. Twice during the course of the night, butter fingers on the part of Neville receivers was the only thing which kept the Tigers from scoring aerial touchdowns. NATCHITOCHES NAILED On Friday night, October 23, the Hoss Men took a long ride to Natchitoches and defeated the Red Devils 26-0 in a hard fought contest. Bill Smith climaxed two Ruston drives to score the touchdowns for the Cats via ground. In their aerial attack, the Bearcats also scored twice. The first tally through the air was the result of a twenty yard pass from halfback Bryant Kennedy to teammate Ralph Delony. The other aerial score came when Kennedy tossed a 30 yard pass to 195 lb. end, Ben James. The Ruston coaches and fans had expected a great deal of scoring by the Red Devils' running sensation, Taylor. When the final gun sounded ending the game, the Red Devils were on the Bearcats' 6 inch line. MINDEN NO. I The Bearcats ruined the climax of the Minden Homecoming festivities by defeating the Crimson Tide 14-7. However, Minden rooters were privileged to see one of the most exciting games of the year at their homecoming. Ruston drew first blood when Bryant Kennedy raced seventy- five yards over left guard to give Ruston a 6-O lead. Earl Alex- ander added the extra point and gave the Bearcats a seven point lead. Minden tried a four down run in the second period which failed to click and the Bearcats took over on the Minden 26 yard line. Bill Smith scored a few plays later to give the Cats their second and final touchdown. In the second half it was all the Bearcats could do to hold the Crimson Tide to seven points. The final gun was music to their SETS. FARMERVILLE WAS THE NEXT VICTIM In freezing cold weather the Bearcats' machine chalked up victory number ten as they defeated the Farmerville Farmers by a score of 28-6. Billy and Ralph Deloney teamed up with Big Earl Alexander to score the twenty-eight points made by the Bearcats. Bill Smith and Bryant Kennedy turned in their usual good running to add to the strong offensive threat of the Bearcats. Ruston's big forward wall put down Farmerville's threats to score on three occasions before the Farmers finally hit paydirt on a thirty-eight yard run by Allen. JONESBORO HODGE A CLOSE ONE' Two thousand excited fans packed the stadium on Friday night at James Field to watch the Ruston Bearcats battle Jonesboro- Hodge's Tigers to an 18-12 victory in one of the most spectacular football contests of the season. With almost perfect weather pre- vailing, the undefeated Bearcats, sparked by a powerful running quartet of Smith, Kennedy, Barmore, and Deloney, launched one smashing attack after another through an almost invincible Tiger eleven, but it was anybody's game until the final seconds of the game when a pass intercepted by the Bearcats, put an end to a last desperate drive by the Tigers to score. The victory over Jonesboro-Hodge gave the Bearcats three successive years with- out a defeat during regular season play. MINDEN NO. 2 In the first game of the class A'f state finals, the Ruston High School Bearcats surprised fans all over Louisiana with their very impressive 25-6 score over Minden. A Battle Royal was expected from the angry Crimson Tide, whom the Cats had defeated to spoil their homecoming. The Bearcats were very wary as they entered the contest with the team who had defeated the mighty Springhill Lumberiacks only the week before. The comparatively easy win came as a surprise to most fans. The Bearcats' attack was directed by a half pint Bearcat sub- stitute, Oren Barmore who scored three of the Cats' touchdowns on runs of 64, 58, and 15 yards. The entire Ruston eleven played a superior game of football. RAYVILLE EASED OVER THE CATS Into each life a little rain must fall. With the rain falling at Brown Stadium in Monroe, the Powerful Bearcat eleven was stunned as they fell to a 6-0 defeat by a highly spirited Rayville ball club. The Bearcats offensive machine never got to moving on the wet turf at the stadium, and for the first time in the '53 season failed to score a touchdown. Later in the final quarter a last des- perate chance spelled disaster when a pass from Barmore to Delony was intercepted by RayviIle's Robert Moore. A few plays later, Rayville scored the deciding touchdown. In the face of defeat the 1953 Ruston High School Bearcats can look with pride at their record. For their fighting spirit and sports- man's attitude, the Bearcats deserve a hearty well done. IT TAKES EVERYBODY TO WIN lp .- x Q , ,Q r ' .
