A REVIEW OF THE i952 SEASON RUSTON HIGH SCHOOL BEARCATS Frog Barham off to the races OLD MAN TRADITION -AND TORNADO-ARE LICKED It was a battle with OI' Man Tradition, as well as the Golden Tornado of Haynesville when the Claiborne parish AA team invaded Class A Ruston on Sept. 12. For the first time in history, the Bearcats hung up two victories in a row over Haynesville, but they did it the hard way. In fact, the game was already over when Fullback Glynn Sandifer blasted through the line to tie up the ball game at 6-6. It took several minutes for the officials to clear the field for that all-important try for the extra point. With thousands standing tensely waiting the boot, the spheroid went into the air . . . end over end . . . climbing for the cross bar . . . it's to the right! . . . no, it's to the left . . . and then . . . The official's arms were stretched high over his head. It was over. Joe Richardson had come through. And the sound, as a mighty rushing wind . . . was nothing more than several thousand Bearcat par- tisans remembering to breathe again. Ruston 7, Haynesville 6. The iinx was licked. -I 1 Walter Reed in for the ' kill When Ruston's football Bearcats reported for work late in July, the defending state Class A champions were riding the crest of a I3-game winning streak and there were high hopes for another successful season for the gridders of Coaches Hoss Garrett and Moose Phillips. There were even some optimistic souls who went way out on the proverbial limb and predicted that the Ruston lads would repeat their stellar performance of l95l when they marched to a state championship. Coaches Garrett and Phillips still were at the helm, and they had proven by past performances that they could produce winners. And quite a number of the same players who had swamped I3 opposing elevens the season before were on hand again for the 1952 campaign. Anything could happen, everybody thought-but few expected what really did happen. Ruston left little to be imagined when the Bearcats opened the schedule on August 29 with a resounding victory over the Class B Hornets of Arcadia. With the first team playing little more than a quarter of the game, the Bearcat reserves marched to a 26-6 victory for Win No. ld. Ace over for a T.D. A TUNE-UP THAT BACKFIRED For weeks, the most dreaded AA team in the state had been pointing for the all-victorious Bearcats . . . Pointing for a tune-up game that was supposed to get them in shape for a strenuous AA schedule and a waltz to the state's big grid crown. Ouachita parish high school of Monroe came to town. It would be a breeze. Every sports writer in Louisiana except one-our own Mr. Newman of the Ruston Leader-had picked the big Lions to take the game without any trouble. Well, it wasn't any trouble for the team to wing only the team that won was Ruston-by a 34-7 county and the second and third strings played the last quarter of the game. All-State Charley Barham had a track meet. The tune-up was accomplished-in reverse. Ace over for a first down SAME SONG . . . HOW MANY VERSES? It was the same song, umpteenth verse the next Friday night over in Homer as the Bearcats stretched their skein to T8 consecutive wins at the expense of the Pelicans-25-O. And the cry was beginning to be heard, Who's gonna stop the Bearcats? The sportswriters of the state were beginning to climb on the Ruston Leader's bandwagon and the scribes were picking the Bearcats to win by whatever score Coach Garrett chooses to run up. And, again, against Homer, the linemen helped in adding up the final count. Pat Hinton intercepted a Homer pass when his baby brother, Tommy, rushed the Pel thrower and ambled some 20 yards to pay dirt. Reed hit hard on goal line - l REBELS ROUTED BY BUMPTIOUS BEARCATS The country-bumpkins Cfrom Ruston, that isj paid a little visit to the city swells Cof Pinevillej. And when it was all over, every Bearcat that could get into a uniform had had part in a 52-12 massacre of the Rebels. lt wasn't a question of who scored which touch- down, but how many, Even the linemen got into the scoring. Big Red Deloney, who was to repeat as an All-State tackle and who was placed on the national high school All-American squad at the end of the 1952 season, galloped across the goal line for six points on a recovered blocked kick. 0 Barham through the middle BALL GAME? OR BATTLE ROYAL? What should have been an easy ball game at Winn- field the next week turned into an almost battle royal as the Winn parish Tigers tried to give the Bearcats a working over in retaliation of some fancied wrong. It was a rough and tumble contest, played on almost even terms the first half, but the Tigers didn't have the staying power built into a Garrett-Phillips machine and the final count was 27-7. Charley Barham was again the big gun for the l9th consecutive Bearcat win, although Coach Garrett kept him on the bench most of the game after the party began to get rough. Reed intercepts pass against Neville and goes for a T.D. FROM 7-6 TO 33-7-OVER THE RED DEVILS In 1951, the Natchitoches Red Devils gave the championship-bound Bearcats their closest scare, hold- ing the Ruston machine to a 7-6 score. But 1952 was a different story. It wasn't as cold as a well digger in Idaho. There were several thousand highly partisan home-town fans in the stands of James Stadium. And it was homecoming for the Bearcats. Natchitoches fielded a wonderful ball club. Several of their players were later selected on All-State and All- District teams. But, the chips were down for the Bearcats and they had to live up to their reputation. The pressure was mounting to the bursting point. And when the sound and fury had died away-Ruston 33, Natchitoches 7. It was No. 21 in a row for Buck Stewart and Company. Barham, behind good blocking by Pat Stub Hinton MORE TIGER MEAT-BUT IT WAS TOUGH!! The Bearcats got their second weekend diet of Tiger meat the following Friday over in Monroe, but the Neville High School eleven proved much tougher than he previous weekend diet. It was a great ball game. lt was a hard-fought but cleanly-played contest. Both teams deserved to win. Ruston wanted the game more than Neville, which about sums up the outcome as the Bearcats brought home Victory No. 20 by a 14-7 score. Barham off tackle for a touchdown BEAT RUSTON BANQUETU FAILS TO PAY OFF The SRO sign was hung but early in the week for the Friday, Oct. 31 date which brought the Minden Crimson Tide to James Field for a grudge battle with the Ruston Bearcats. For over a year, Minden fans had been claiming they could have beaten Ruston in 1951- if we hadn't met you in our opening game. Halloween night, 1952, was to be a different story -they thought. And, by golly, it almost was. Final score: Ruston 12, Minden 7. And the Bearcats had to prove they were champions by coming back from behind in the final period to snag victory out of almost sure defeat. . Reggie French, sophomore halfback, was the dif- ference. Minden had been filling the air full of passes all night-to good effect. But, they threw one too many. That one was the aerial French intercepted. And that was the ball game. Ace over for his third T.D. in game with Jonesboro-Hodge AND THAT SET THE STAGE-FOR JONESBORO-HODGE Yes, that was all for the home schedule. The next week would bring on Jonesboro-Hodge Cand don't forget Hodge!D It was to be the game to end all games-at Jonesboro. It was all or nothing for the Bearcats who wanted, more than anything else, to wind up two consecutive schedules without a defeat, and in the process, take Win 24 in a row. But, Jonesboro-Hodge Cand Jackson Parishj were ready and waiting. The Tigers were more than willing and Ceverybody thoughtj plenty able to snap the Bear- cat skein. And that past master with the crying towel, Coach Hoss Garrett, put on his most mournful expression. We ain't got a chance, bub. Which may, in fact, have been the tipoff, because past experience has proven that when Hoss Garrett talks like that, Katy, bar the door. Results: Not a ball game but more of a track meet. Everybody got into the act. Final score: Ruston 42, Jonesboro-Hodge O, THE LAST HOME GAME-AND AN ALMOST UPSET We'll have it easy Friday night against Farmerville. So said 99 out of lO0 Ruston football fans. The only thing wrong with that was that the Bearcats started believing it, too. The final score: Farmerville 7, Ruston 34, but only after some 5000 Ruston fans were scared within a hair of their lives. And the Bearcats decided that they'd have to play ball after all, if they wanted to win. The first half was scoreless. At the end of the third quarter Ruston had a 7-O lead. Then, early in the final period, Farmerville tied it at 7-all. Then the roof fell in -on Farmerville. The Bearcat varsity, pleading for lust one more chance, coach, got back into the ball game. Boom, BOOM! BOOM!! BOOM!!! Reggie French off for a nice gain against Springhill THEN, lT BEGAN TO HAPPEN After going through two consecutive seasons and two l95l playoff games without a defeat, the Bearcats still didn't know whether they'd have a shot at the title again. In the big, sprawling North Louisiana district, two teams still were in the running-and the Bearcats would have to wait until Thanksgiving day to learn the final answer. Well, it went down to the wire-and Springhill won the Thanksgiving day game from Minden and the right to challenge Ruston for the district crown. So, the game was set up and playoff arranged, after Ruston had been sitting idly by for three weeks to learn their fate. Ruston vs. Springhill-there. It was a cold night in Springhill Tuesday, Dec. 2, l952, Sportswriters throughout the state billed it as the battle of two grid giants. If Ruston won, chances were that the l95l championship game would have to be played over as Ponchatoula was riding high in South Louisiana and wanted nothing more than a chance to avenge their 1951 defeat handed them by the Bearcats. It was a long ride home-for Ruston. The long layoff was too much. A boy by the name of John D. Crowe was too much, also. Springhill won ld-O, the first time in almost five years that Ruston had been shut-out. And the first game in 25 consecutive contests that the Bearcats wound up on the short end of the score. The next day comments were heard to the effect that the best team last night won. But Editor Newman of The Leader disagreed. The best team-last night-won, was the way he put it. BEAT ARCADIA . fr That was the end of football for the Bearcats in 1952. Springhill went on to win the championship. But, when the boys loaded on the bus for the long ride home from Springhill that night, this was what you heard: Let's beat Arcadia! We open against them next September.
