The pass- ing of time, the day in its unending cycle - these are the backdrops for this change of decades, Theslowly dwindling flame of the sixties is now snuffed out, and the new can- oO dle of the seventies burns brightly on the horizon, calling forward the class of 1970. As this year of transition flickers to a close, we of the class of 1970 look back on our past years, and memories flash into our minds, Memories of laughter, memorics of tears - the classes, the friends, the teachers, the wood as well as the bad. This is not the end, This is not the beginning of the end. But, perhaps it is the end of the be- ginning, - Winston Churchill This quote aptly describes the situation of the Senior Class of Rustburg High School. The year 1970 draws to a close the joys, pains, and, smemories of five unforgettable years, but the search for knowledge, and for identity in today's complex society never ends. It is hard to imagine how swiftly time passes. Sometimes, it helps to pause and think back, to reminisce... Fall - nineteen sixty-five, Wham! We collided head on with Rustburg High School, and it took our entire eighth grade year to recover from the shock. Our officers were David Falwell, President; Preston Eagle, Vice-President; Linda Hanks, Secretary; Marlene Granger, Treasurer; and Brenda Owen, Reporter. Our sponsors were Mrs, Booker, Mrs, Wilson, Mrs. Adams, Mr, Dotson, and Mr, Evans. In the beginning of our freshman year, we finally settled down to our typical roles as inferior under- classmen, The officers for the year were Brenda Owen, President; Mitch Tweedy, Vice-President; Marlene Granger, Secretary-Treasurer; Jerry Austin, Historian; and Susan Burleigh, Reporter. The sponsors who guided us were Mrs, Greene, Miss Hall, Mr. Giles, and Mr, Burnette. As freshmen, we began to get involved in various sports and club organizations at R.H.S., and we developed a fierce pride in our school, In the fall of 1967, we returned as big bad sophomores for another tour of duty, and our participation in athletics and clubs increased considerably. The class officers elected were Shirley Dawson, President; Martha Henderson, Vice-President; Sue Wright, Secretary; Diane Almond, Treasurer; and Bobbie Mann, Reporter. Our understanding sponsors included Miss Hobgood, Mrs, Gregory, Mrs, Bugg, and Mrs, Smith, After a three-month breather, we moved up a rung on the ladder - we were mighty juniors, heirs to the throne. We participated with the Senior Class in Class Night, the Prom, and numerous other get- togethers. We ordered and received our class rings in late spring of 1969 and wore them with pride, The following officers were elected: Ray Lee, President; Wesley Driskill, Vice-President; Sue Wright, Secretary; Rickey Suthard, Treasurer; and Jean Metcalf, Historian, Our class sponsors were Mrs. Rush, Mrs. Hicks, Miss Bragassa, and Mr. Dictor, And now, the grand finale - we have entered a new era, Everything is new - the administration, new faculty members, and our class has almost doubled in size, Our officers this year are Bonnie Bailey, President; Charlotte Robinson, Vice-President; Lynn Carson, Secretary; Jerry Austin, Treasurer; Steve Daniel, Historian; Sue Wright, Reporter; Cookie Garbee, Chaplain, Our sponsors this year are, Mrs. Bugg, Mrs. Cole, Mrs, Davis, Mrs. Hall, Mr. Fletcher, and Mr. Brown. Most of us simply will not realize until the last day how attached we have become to this school, and the thought of leaving will be almost inconceivable. After graduation in June, we'll pass the torch to the class of 1971 and take our leave with a trunkful of memories. 25 SENIOR VALEDICTORIAN WILLIAM MARTIN JONES DIAN PAULETTE JORDAN DEBORAH LYNN MARTIN 2% STEPHEN LLOYD DANIEL SHIRLEY FRANCIS DAWSON SCHOLARS SALUTATORIAN JUDITH RAE MASON THOMAS ALLEN DAVIS RAE LYNN CARSON CHARLOTTE JANE ROBINSON ALBERT NEAL FARISS 27 RUTH GWENDOL YN ALEX ANDER Ea phy, We edie: BONNIE STARR BAILEY S.C, A.
