As we began to attend classes, we were constantly impressed by the Dennis Anders Shirley Ayers Duane Beasley Oscar Blankenship Roy Blankinship Delores Brooks Harold Brooks Jerry Brooks Joan Brooks Charles Burnette Gene Candler Phyllis Carwile Carol Clay David Clowdis Janice Coleman Ronald Collins Roy Creasey Douglas Dalton Harold Davidson Brenda Dowdy Barbara Driskill Willis Driskill Nancy Eagle Shirley Elliott Thelma Elliott Connie Falwell Ronald Fauber Carolyn Ferrell Ann Franklin Barbara Gallier Franklin Goff Nelson Goff William Gray Wilma Gregory Elbert Hall Louise Harder Robert Harper Ruby Harris Roy Heatherley Nancy Herndon Roberta Hodges Sylvia Huffman Rebecca Hurt Willard Isaacs Rebecca Johnson Marian Jones Barry Leonard James Mann Robert Mason Robbie Mays Daphne McCanna Nancy Nickerson James Parker Robert Parker Jean Powell Faye Pugh beautiful building and the equipment with which we would work in the years to come, It was hard for us to believe that we really were here, Late in the fall we felt that we had learned the new faces well enough, and so we elected class officers, with Bob Thompson to lead us for the year, At Christmas we enjoyed a skating party, and in spite of a few spills, we had a lot of fun, After Easter vacation it will be just one big jump until June, when we will finally be Freshmen! That anticipation was probably more realistic to us, since we were right next door to all the activity surrounding the construction of the new building, and we were beginning to be a little curious, too, of what to expect from our new classmates who would be coming in from the Brookville school, Would we be a house divided, or would the experience make for a stronger system of education, and prepare us better for working with our fellow men after graduation? Then came the big day for which we had waited all summer, The doors of the new school at Rustburg were opened to receive the largest Freshman Class in its history, With joyful shouts we were back to greet a new school year with much enthusiasm--to renew old friend - ships and to begin work in a brand new building with interiors decorated as tastefully as our homes. Who could help but be happy at school with such wonderful surroundings ? But we managed to survive bruised knees and skinned up shins and put on a pretty good show, if we do say so! The Senior entertainment now history, we begin thinking of the traditions marking gradua- tion exercises at Rustburg High School, Our part it will be to help with the staging of Class Night activities, running hundreds of errands, literally waiting on those Seniors, reveling in the belief that not too long in the future the same favors will be shown us on a similar occasion, And then the making of the daisy chain to be presented to the Senior Class--thousands of flowers, sore fingers, blistered hands, and realization that we are finally--Juniors! SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Barbara Tweedy Louis Cowart Mrs, Robertson Secretary Reporter Adviser Margaret Blankinship Octavia Loftin Historian Vice-President Mary Ida Talley Frederick Keesee Treasurer President SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Four years ago twenty-six noisy ‘‘rats’’ climbed the stairs to the Freshman room in the old building to begin four very exciting years of high school, With Mrs, Harvey Wilson to set us on the right track and Kathleen Elliott as President, we took part in the usual fall activities, The big event of the fall, the Farm Show, saw several of our members taking home the honors, We approached spring, looking forward to May Day, and Peggy Blankinship and Phyllis Wooldridge were our representatives to the May Court, The next year Mrs, Wilson was again our Adviser, and Freddie Keesee was elected as President of our class, There was much ahead of us this year, and we remember the Christmas party, FFA and FHA banquets and our class party, Before we realized it, another year had been completed, and we were now upper classmen, v, VS Te oe ts a 7 at Margaret Elizabeth Blankinship Rustburg, Virginia Gordon Hunter Coleman, Jr, Route Two Rustburg, Virginia Louis Eugene Cowart Route One Rustburg, Virginia Lucy Ann Dalton Route One Rustburg, Virginia James Bennett Driskill Route Two Gladys, Virginia Kathleen Marie Elliott Route One, Box 32 Rustburg, Virginia Time passed rapidly, and in September, 1953, there were only fifteen of us left to form the Junior Class, headed by Hilda Lee as President, Mrs, Annie Martin was our Adviser, and we soon grew to depend on her to solve the many problems confronting us, This was the year we had waited for--the year we received our class rings, And what fun we had in getting into grease paint for our first big production, the Junior Play, Late in the spring we had fun enter- taining the Senior Class, and later in helping them to complete their Commencement plans, Although we were having lots of fun along with hard work, we were looking forward to our own Senior days with hopes and dreams, By the time the next September rolled around, we started our Senior year with eighteen enrolled, and chose Freddie Keesee to be our President, It didn’t take us long to realize that we would be the first class to graduate from the new high school, and it seems that we started planning for that day even before classes had started. Then came the Bazaar, and our representative, Bill Staples, won the title of King, after a rather hectic evening of fighting for votes, Just before Thanksgiving we presented the Senior Play entitled ‘‘Happy Days,’’ and it was a big success, What would we have done if it hadn't been for Louis, who so ably stepped into the leading part almost at the last minute! Then came the Christmas Season, and we played ‘ ‘Peanut’’ instead of the usual ‘‘Pollyanna,”’ Wasn't it fun finding out who had been sneaking gifts to us all during the week? By the time Senior Day arrived, the lower classmen were really worried about what their penalties might be, but we were only out to let everyone know who was in the Senior Class, Dale Vidalia Talley Mary Ida Talley Christine Elizabeth Trent Barbara Ann Tweedy Route Two Route Two Route One Rustburg, Virginia Rustburg, Virginia Rustburg, Virginia Rustburg, Virginia Paul Pollard Wingfield Phyllis Ann Wooldridge Route Two Route One Rustburg, Virginia Rustburg, Virginia Then came the question of the long and the short of it--evening gowns, that is, What shall we wear on Class Night? That remains to be seen! And the day we selected invitations and cards for graduation--we're almost through with our high school days, Remember the day that averages were announced, and we came up with not one, but two Valedictorians, Hilda Lee and Barbara Tweedy! Then we began to realize that time really was passing quickly, Before we know it, we will be going our separate ways, and we must begin some serious thinking on what we are to do when that time comes, As we look back over the senior year, we remember the many little things which made life happy for us--the time Ben modeled Judy’s Christmas gift, the day the locks were put on the hall lockers, the Friday night dances, term papers to be typed, basketball and baseball, the senior trip, the entertainment given us by the Sophomore Class, pages of layout for the Annual, the arrival of our long-awaited caps and gowns--and Commencement, CLASS PROPHECY The spring day was cold, and as the last few raindrops trickled down the window pane, I began to dream back to the days when I was in high school, My classmates had gone their separate ways, but I began to wonder what each one was doing, now that ten years had passed, I wandered out onto the street, and after I had walked a couple of blocks I happened to find a crystal ball at my feet. How it got there, I'll never know, but I picked it up and hurried home. When I looked deep into the ball it seemed to tell me just what I wanted to know, As each face appeared a voice seemed to say: Octavia Loftin is teaching Home Economics, although she is still crossing the bridge to Goncordstossces boom liers Lucy Dalton is now married to a prosperous rancher at Sycamore, As head nurse at Lynchburg General Hospital, Christine Trent is still looking for the per- fect man, cs G. H. Coleman has a part ownership in the Coleman-Evans hog ranch and is doing fine, except that his profits are being cut short for some unknown reason, Peggy Blankinship is working as secretary for Mitchell Repair Service at Gladys, where she and her husband now live, Barbara Tweedy is employed by the FBI, although she has completed plans forher marriage to the left-fielder of the New York Giants, Louis Cowart is operating the Bachelor's Home which is located next door to the newly constructed Home for Spinsters, Dale Talley is living on a farm near Concord with her husband and three sons, She and her husband also sing on their own TV program, Kathleen Elliott, airline hostess for United Airlines, plans to join her husband in Germany soon, Ben Driskill owns his own tobacco farm near ‘‘Rowdy’’ and at last married one of those Concord brunettes, Judy Martin has opened a new primary school in Tyreeanna, where she is teaching, and her four children also attend the same school, Phyllis Wooldridge is secretary for Mitchell Lumber Company, Paul Wingfield is working as chief stock clerk with J, P, Bell Company. Hilda Lee is back from her South American honeymoon and is working for Dr. James Epperson in his Animal Hospital. Bill Staples is still playing ‘‘Papa’’ to all the eligible nurses at Lynchburg General Hospital, Mary Ida Talley has at last settled down at Concord with her husband, who has his law office there, Johnny Snow is operating ‘‘Snow Body and Fender Company’’ for his classmates’ future use, Freddie Keesee is preaching at ‘‘Mikes’’ largest Church, Saint Luke, His friends are al- ways invited, and as the visions in the crystal ball began to fade I seemed to hear his Church choir, composed of all the voices we had known so well during our four years of high school, LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the 1955 Senior Class of Rustburg High School, being of sound mind, do hereby make and publish this last will and testament, and do declare all others to be made null and void, Me Int Huts General To the school, we leave the dignity of the '55 graduating class, To the Sophomore Class, we leave the opportunity of having a truly wonderful Junior Year, since they will not have a Senior Class to wait on then, Faculty To Mr. Hodge, we leave a ‘‘worry bird.”’ To Mrs, Williams, we leave an office with no telephone, To Miss Massie, we leave hopes of a quiet, well-behaved History Class. To Mrs, Riegel, we leave a class who refuses to raid a full refrigerator, To Mr. Moorman, we leave a smile, To Mr. Waddell, the Senior Class leaves love and appreciation for all the many things which he has done for us, To Mrs, Hunter, we leave dreams of a perfect English IV Class, To Miss Witt, we leave a winning basketball team, To Mrs, Davis, we leave a larger thermos, for we know how well she likes her coffee, To Mrs, Minnick, we leave a schedule in which she will have only one thing to do at a time, To Mr, Evans, we leave another scrawny pig to add to his present collection, To Miss Skelton, we leave the quiet atmosphere which is needed in the library at all times, To Mrs, Robertson, we leave the hopes of having a perfect Annual Staff, and memories of a class that loved you so much, Special Bequests Kathleen Elliott leaves to Jane Lee her secret of how to keep a small waistline, Johnny Snow leaves to Jesse Cunningham the curve, brick building, and telephone pole at Excelsior Dry Cleaning Company on Campbell Avenue, Dale Talley leaves her ability to be seen and not heard to Marian Jones, Christine Trent leaves her quiet manner to Buzzy Overbey, feeling that he needs it so badly. Freddie Keesee leaves to Dot Harrell his skilled ways in getting to Lynchburg in a short time, Octavia Loftin leaves her sweet ways and disposition to the head cheerleader of R. H.S. Paul Wingfield leaves his ability to stay out of trouble to Nelson Goff, knowing that he will need it. Judy Martin leaves a map of Tyreeanna to Nina Callohan, so she won’t have any excuse for going to Chuck’s home instead of Bill’s, G. H, Coleman leaves memories of Margy to all those guys who'll fall as hard as he did, A blackjack is left to all ‘‘Riverside Parkers’ by Bill Staples, as he once had the need for one, Hilda Lee leaves her luck in always having a date to Cynthia Younger, To Lois Stone, Barbara Tweedy leaves her love of ‘‘Jack’s,’’ because she doesn’t need it any more, To Barry Morrison, Mary Ida Talley leaves her two extra credits and the way through the front door, To Marian Mayberry, Peggy Blankinship leaves her sweet ways, knowing she needs them, Lucy Dalton leaves her ability to forget all boys except one to Kay Bailey, Ben Driskill leaves his pitching ability to Roy Heatherly. Phyllis Wooldridge leaves her ability to get the most out of a week-end, and still show up for school on Monday, to Edith Coffer.
